Coveted German international striker Mario Gomez has given the clearest indication yet that he is prepared to leave VfB Stuttgart in favour of a bigger club.
The powers that be at VfB have already admitted that they are resigned to losing their 'Mister Zuverlaessig' (Mr Reliable), in the face of growing rumours linking him to the likes of Chelsea, Milan, Juventus and Roma. Now, after his latest interview, it would appear that their best hope is to get the highest possible fee for the 2007 German Footballer of the Year.
"I am happy in Stuttgart but I desire to progress in football," admitted the 22-year-old.
"If a major offer comes in, I have agreed with my club that I can have talks. I consider myself capable of playing in the big European leagues.
"I watch the Premier League and it is one of the best in the world. I know Chelsea scouts have watched matches."
Gomez has a Spanish father and a German mother, but has opted to play his national football for the country of his birth, Germany. Barring an untimely injury, he is a lock to be named in the Germany squad for Euro 2008, for whom he has scored four goals in just eight internationals so far.
Cole: We're Lurking In The Shadows Joe Cole has warned Arsenal and Manchester United to watch out - Chelsea are within striking distance and lying in wait for the duo to slip up.
A terrific run of Premiership results, with nine wins and three draws from 12 and no league defeat in 2008, has propelled Chelsea back into title contention.
The Blues play their game in hand against Tottenham tomorrow night and know a win at the Lane would draw them level with Arsenal on points.
Creeping Along Quietly
Often out of the spotlight as football fans talked of a two-horse race, Chelsea have ridden themselves back into the picture. Now, says midfielder Joe Cole, they're ready to strike and snatch some last-gasp glory.
"We抮e happy in the shadows, lurking there," said the England international. "Now we抮e ready to build some good form and go on the onslaught. This is a great time for Chelsea.
Chelsea keeper Petr Cech could be recalled to the side for this weekend's massive league match with Arsenal
The first-choice shotstopper was expected to miss the Stamford Bridge clash with an ankle injury that has kept him out of recent fixtures.
But round-the-clock treatment has meant the Czech international has a serious chance of being ready for one of this season's remaining title deciders.
Carlo Cudicini will definitely keep goal on Wednesday night as Chelsea travel to Tottenham for their game in hand, but boss Avram Grant is desperate to have Cech return as soon as possible after Cudicini's howler at Barnsley helped eliminate the Blues from the FA Cup.
