Rain抯 Investment in Kosdaq Firm Spurs Skepticism, Tuesday, Sep 18 2007, Korea

South Korean pop idol Rain became a major shareholder of a Kosdaq-listed wireless telecom equipment maker and plans to turn the loss-making company into an entertainment firm.
He said in a statement to the Kosdaq market that he will invest 3.5 billion won to acquire 880,408 shares of Satec.
Shares of the company have been suspended since July 27 due to capital erosion.
The firm is issuing 5.68 million new shares at 4,050 won per share. It will raise 23 billion won by issuing the shares to third parties, including the pop star.
Rain will become the second biggest shareholder of the wireless device parts maker after Softbank Corporate Restructuring Company Fund, which will purchase 4.3 million shares.
Since the fund is acting out as a financial investor, the virtual management control of the company will be in the hands of Rain. He pledged to turn the firm into a total IT and entertainment group.
Following the news of the singer's Kosdaq engagement, StarM Entertainment and Intelligent Telecom, which will also buy the shares of Satec, performed strongly.
StarM closed at its daily limit-high of 1,840 won, rising 15 percent, and Intelligent Telecom also closed up 15 percent at 2,115 won.
However, analysts were skeptical about the growth potential of Satec following Rain's investment. They said that such themes involving high-profile celebrities influencing the stock market have long gone with the wind.
``Those days are gone when popular entertainers boomed the stock market from 2005 to early 2006,'' said Hwang Sung-jin, an analyst of SK Securities. ``Most entertainment firms are not doing so well both fundamentally and profitably. Celebrity stocks are no longer interesting to investors, and I doubt they will continue their investments in such stocks.''
Analysts believe Rain is the ``last bus'' for a very few investors to hop on for a short ride, given Satec's poor balance sheet and that there haven't been any good examples of healthy corporations run by entertainers.
Entertainment firm Key East, controlled by popular actor Bae Yong-joon, is performing poorly due to weak fundamentals. It recorded 2.4 billion won in net losses in the first half of the year. Bae stars in a recently launched hit TV drama, ``The Four Guardian Gods of the King.''
Bae invested 9 billion won in Autowin Tech, a Kosdaq-listed system integration firm through its third party allotment early last year, taking over management and changing it to a cultural contents company, Key East.
Bae's investment back then, when most entertainers chose to go public through back-door listings, resembles Rain's interest in Satec.
Rain said he chose to invest in the small and unknown company on the Kosdaq market, which lacked soundness, to prevent the possibility of hurting investors on celebrity investment that usually affects the fluctuation of stock prices.
The lock-up period for Rain's shares is set at two years.

YesterdayRain went through the sponsors of the concert, and made a specialinvitation to the readers of the morning paper, stating his hope tomeet with Shanghai fans as soon as possible. He also expressed in theinterview that his wish was to cooperate with Chinese entertainer(s),and disclosed his hope to "put on a show" with Zhang Ziyi (famousChinese actress).
In April of this year, Rain seperated from hismentor JYP, but what followed were the cancellation of US andShanghai's concerts and other negative events, causing things to godownhill. Rain was distraught in front of the media, expressing hissentiment of apology to his fans. But then coming along into the 17thof this month, the KOSDAQ-listed company SATEX announced that upon Rainbecoming the company's major stockholder, he will become his own bossand have the abundance of funds, and will intend to push this wirelessproduction company towards the direction of the entertainment industry.
Under this good news, the start up of a previously interrupted worldtour can also now become a possibility. Under the endeavours of allparties involved, the October 6 "Rain's Coming" Shanghai concert willbe held at Hong Kou Soccer Stadium. Rain, who does not want to have anyfurther mistakes again, specially sent out a personal hand-writteninvitation yesterday through the sponsors by way of the readers of themorning paper: "Friends of <Xin Wen Chen Bao> (the Chinesenewspaper), I am Rain, looking forward to seeing all of you at theconcert!"
When talking about the 'winding road' of the Shanghaiperformance, Rain indicated that he has been wanting to come toShanghai, even coordinated to design a new hairstyle specially for thisstop. "I liked it myself, but as for whether it could become a newtrend, I had to look towards the fans for approval." Rain, who isreputable as South Korea's dancing king of the new generation, may ormay not bring new movements into this performance. Regarding thismatter, Rain's response was that his own talent is by no meansdifferent, he is just glad to take on challenges unceasingly. "If youreally must say that my performance is special here, then that is myability and energy to follow the trend."
A face with anenchanting smile is Rain's biggest advertisement. In the interview hedisclosed that he very much likes to smile, and by no means try to puton a 'cool' appearance while on stage. When he is not performing, heeven frequently jokes around with his staff. When asked which part isthe "most satisfying part of his face", Rain's answer was the thoughtof majority of his female fans, "I'm most satisfied with my eyes." Hedisclosed that he personally likes "clever girls". Rain told thereporter that among the Chinese female movie stars whom he appreciatesis Zhang Ziyi, "To have the opportunity to work with Zhang Ziyi in amovie is what I hope for."
After experiencing all sorts ofdisturbance, Rain's deep feelings has become the star's difficulty. "Asan entertainer, there will definitely be pressure deriving from work,the key is to know how to have a balance, As for me, dancing is thebest way to cope with the pressure." He said that regardless of whetherit is a movie, singing, or making an advertisement, all he wants is todo well and have no regrets. This is Rain's way of working. Based onthe reporter's understanding, on September 23 Rain will be part of anactivity together with Kim Dong-Wan, Bada, Take (among other Koreanstars stated but whom I don't know of), and they will head to Nantongto attend the Asian Art Festival. On the evening of September 25, Rainwill also make a public appearance on CCTV's mid-autumn festival party.
