LONDON (AFP) - Roy Keane's closest confidant has denied reports that the former Manchester United captain is on the verge of a move to Real Madrid.
A Spanish newspaper report on Sunday suggested the Irish midfielder had already passed a medical for Real, but the claim was dismissed as "completely wrong" by Keane's representative.
Michael Kennedy, the lawyer who manages Keane's financial affairs, told The Manchester Evening News that his client would not be making any decision on his future until Wednesday or Thursday at the earliest
Real have emerged as favourites to sign the 34-year-old because it seems Celtic, the club he most wanted to join, are unable or unwilling to put together an acceptable salary package.
Keane, who earned a reported 90,000 pounds-a-week at United, has said he would prefer not to stay in the Premiership and be forced to play against the club he served for 12 trophy-laden years.
But if he does not want to go to Real, he may find himself with no option.
Over half the clubs in the Premiership have expressed an interest in signing Keane.
Bolton and Everton are regarded as the frontrunners as he could switch to them without uprooting his large family from his current home south of Manchester.
Everton have indicated that they are ready to give Keane a two-year deal -- a risky move given his recent injury record.
According to Spanish sports daily Marca, generally very well informed on Real's business dealings, the club's financiers have agreed to come up with the wages required to tempt Keane into a reunion with former United colleague David Beckham.
Manchester United meanwhile are being linked with a possible move for Ajax's Nigel de Jong as they attempt to plug the gaping hole in midfield created by Keane's departure.
