Wenger puts Harimau Muda through the paces
By ERIC SAMUEL
KUALA LUMPUR: The Harimau Muda national Under-19 boys had a golden opportunity to come face to face with Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger at the Dataran Merdeka here yesterday.
The 59-year-old Frenchman was a big hit, drawing at least 1,000 fans to his session to share some tips with the Malaysian players. The more than an hour session included speed drills, agility tests and vertical jumps before Wenger watched the boys play against each other in a brief competition.
Harimau Muda coach Ong Kim Swee said that even though it was a brief session for the players, it provided a valuable lesson for them.
“It is not every day that we get a top football personality from Europe coming down here. I had the opportunity to talk to him about the team,” said Kim Swee, whose boys are leading the pack in the 13-team Premier League this season.
“He gave me some good advice to do it the Arsenal way — short passes and fast thinking concept.”
Wenger’s visit, made possible by Castrol, is part of the brand’s sponsorship of the World Cup in South Africa next year.
This is Wenger’s second visit to Malaysia after having come with the Arsenal team for a pre-season friendly against the national team in 1999. |
