A Storm Coming to NHK

The PR campaign for this year's Kohaku is picking up steam. NHK is celebrating the 60th anniversary of its annual New Year's Eve song contest "Kohaku Uta Gassen" and wanted to get some big names on the bill. As we previously reported, they have singer-actor Fukuyama Masaharu, who will appear via satellite hookup from Kochi. That's the hometown of the legendary samurai Sakamoto Ryoma, the role Fukuyama will play from January in the year-long taiga drama series on the public network. They also have reunited folk group Alice, who'll be on the show for the first time in nine years. And over the weekend, NHK announced the artists who'll be making their debut on the show.

But the biggest name is that of Arashi, the Johnny's Jimusho idol group who are celebrating their 10th anniversary this year. The invitation will culminate a great year for Arashi (translates as "storm"), who have the two best-selling singles of 2009, a million-selling greatest hits album, and whose five members are in movies and all over the TV schedule. With SMAP appearing on Kohaku for the 17th time, Tokio for the 16th, and newcomers NYC Boys, there will be four Johnny's acts on the bill for the first time in 21 years. SMAP member Nakai Masahiro will again be co-presenter with actress Nakama Yukie.

The other debutants this year are: Remiromen, Flumpool, Funky Monkey Babys, Kimura Kaela and Mizuki Nana. Kamiji Yusuke will appear solo, though he was a member of the trio Shuchishin last year. Meanwhile, pop group Exile will follow up their recent performance for the Emperor with their fifth Kohaku appearance. But they have a long way to go before they catch up with the likes of Wada Akiko (33rd time), Mori Shinichi (42nd) or Kitajima Saburo (46th).

Johnny's boy bands join lineup for 'Kohaku Uta Gassen'

TOKYO - NHK on Monday announced the names of the 50 artists and groups to perform on this year’s 60th NHK “Kohaku Uta Gassen” (Red and White Song Contest), with four Johnny’s boy bands topping the list including, Arashi and NYC boys.

Arashi was scheduled not to appear due to other commitments but decided to join in the 60th anniversary program. NYC boys, who will make their first appearance, were also excited to participate, with member Yuri Chinen, 15, vowing to “definitely try not to lose to Arashi!”

Both groups were invited by NHK. Keisuke Inoue, NHK’s chief producer, explained, “Kohaku usually only features the top sellers of that year. Arashi is always a best seller. And NYC has been having great sales even though they’re still new.”

Johnny’s Entertainment president Johnny Kitagawa said, “Because there’s an age limit on the actual countdown (that runs after Kohaku), NYC couldn’t appear, so we instead wanted them to sing on Kohaku.”

Inoue also hinted at the possibility of other singers in the 100-member Johnny’s Jrs troupe to make a surprise appearance as “reinforcements.”

Other groups making their debut at “Kohaku” include Funky Monkey Babys and Flumpool.

Kusanagi, Takeuchi reunite in "Boku to Tsuma no 1778 no Monogatari"
Sat, November 21, 2009 (8:56pm EST)

SMAP member Tsuyoshi Kusanagi (35) and actress Yuko Takeuchi (29) will co-star in a new movie titled "Boku to Tsuma no 1778 no Monogatari." The pair previously acted together in Akihiko Shiota's box office hit "Yomigaeri" in 2003.

"Boku to Tsuma" is based on the real-life story of science fiction writer Taku Mayumura (75) and his wife Setsuko, who died of colon cancer in 2002. Mayumura took the advice of a doctor who said that laughter helps the immune system, and he wrote a short story every day for Setsuko. Initially, she was expected to live for only a year, but she didn't die until five years later, after a total of 1,778 stories.

Kusanagi's character, modeled after Mayumura, is a sci-fi author named Sakutaro Makimura. Takeuchi plays his wife Setsuko. Other characters are played by Shosuke Tanihara, Michiko Kichise, and Ren Osugi.

The movie is being directed by Mamoru Hoshi, whose credits include the television dramas "Boku no Ikiru Michi" and "Boku no Aruku Michi," which both starred Kusanagi. Filming started last month and is scheduled to finish on December 26. Toho plans to have the film screened overseas, including at Cannes in May, with a theatrical release the following winter.

Koki Mitani's "Talk Like Singing" – Musical Theater Review

By Yuan-Kwan Chan

The world premiere of Japan’s original musical "Talk Like Singing" took place halfway across the world at New York University as part of a 10-day show run.  The location is not altogether surprising given the Big Apple’s reputation for world-class theater and its strong Japanese expatriate population, and the standing ovation at the end of the 8 p.m. showing on Nov. 21, 2009, suggests more success for “Talk Like Singing” when the musical plays in its homeland in the near future.

On the outset, the oddball plot doesn’t seem like it can support a two-hour live performance: a young man named Tarlow cannot hold a conversation unless he breaks into song and dance, and dueling scientific researchers (Dr. Dyson and Dr. Nimoy) try to help him assimilate into society by toning down – or even eliminating – his spontaneous melodic outbursts.  But the end result is comedic, imaginative and touching, thanks to the lead triumvirate behind the production.

Director and writer Koki Mitani’s deft execution, as shown in the hilariously offbeat ensemble comedy films “The Wow-choten Hotel” and “The Magic Hour,” translates well to the stage, and seamlessly moves between English and Japanese dialogue.  Yasuharu Konishi’s musical score accompanies the story perfectly, and those familiar with his past life as a front man of the group Pizzicato Five will hear many of the big band influences that permeated such hit tunes as “Twiggy Twiggy vs. James Bond.”  Then there is lead actor Shingo Katori as the naïve-but-fun-loving Tarlow, a huge star in his stage debut best known as one of the five members of Japanese boy idol group SMAP.  It’s difficult to imagine any of the SMAP members other than Katori for this role, particularly given his infectious energy during concert performances and delightfully quirky characters in SMAP variety shows (yes, there are shades of “Shingo Mama” in his portrayal of Tarlow as a young boy).  Katori spends most of the production prancing across the stage barefoot, singing in Japanese and English.

This is not to take away from the rest of the cast and the band, as Katori is supported by just three other actors who wear so many hats that one would think the cast is actually four times the size.  Jay Kibera puts in a memorable turn as the egocentric Dr. Dyson, whose ploy to rid Tarlow of his ability to sing reeks of self-serving gratification.  Shinya Niiro showcases his multiple talents in a wildly diverse set of characters; to name just a few, one minute he’s the Afro-wearing, soul-bearing Brother, a flamboyant fast food manager admonishing Tarlow the next, and then a peon assistant to Dr. Dyson waiting for his own revenge.  Keiko Horiuchi is solid as Dr. Nimoy but like Niiro, also has to take a schizophrenic role that sees her as a broadcast journalist among other personas.  The talented pit orchestra – the band Tri4th – even takes the stage at one point, doubling as bit characters.

It will be interesting to see how “Talk Like Singing” will play out in Japan, as the story’s narrative in the New York version favored an English-speaking audience.  Some of the Japanese dialogue could have been benefited by subtitles, although the couple of times these were used, they were done in a very effective way as stage props.  Despite these small gaps, “Talk Like Singing” is an entertaining way to spend two hours lost in Tarlow’s tune-filled mind.

The New York finale of “Talk Like Singing” will be performed at NYU’s Jack H. Skirball Center for the Performing Arts on Sun., Nov. 22, at 3 p.m., with performances scheduled throughout Japan at later dates.
