English Angle: Manchester United Second String Stakes Strong Claim For Quadruple

Injuries may be tearing through Old Trafford, but it's Sir Alex's supreme confidence that remains truly contagious as the Red Devils continue their quest for an unprecedented trophy haul this season...

During Manchester United's 4-2 League Cup win over Derby County in midweek – a result which puts the Red Devils into the final 4-3 on aggregate – the strength-in-depth of Sir Alex Ferguson's squad was there for all to see.

At some points during the game, either via enforced changes or prearranged tinkering, the line-up was experimental. One got the impression that any combination from United's pool of players would be enough to outclass the vast majority of teams in England, let alone the struggling Rams. Gary Neville was in the centre of defence, Darren Fletcher ended up at right back, youngsters Darron Gibson and Danny Welbeck played 90 minutes - it didn't matter. They had more than enough to win the day, despite a spirited late fightback from Nigel Clough's men.

Man Utd have now reached their first domestic final of the season and will likely meet holders Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley. Pre-season, United were 1000-1 to win all six competitions they entered, which is looking like a great punt in hindsight. They've already put two prizes in the cabinet – the Community Shield and the Club World Cup crown – and progression to the League Cup final comes at a time when United have just leapfrogged Liverpool to the top of the Premier League table.

So, is Ferguson's squad deep enough to win an incredible sextet of honours? Furthermore, why is it that the Old Trafford also-rans appear to be so settled and capable, compared to those at other big clubs?

In terms of the mega-haul, few would bet against it. United know the way to the podium in all of their outstanding competitions and are firm favourites across the board individually. As deep as their squad is, however, there's now something of an injury crisis developing, which must secretly worry the gaffer. The Derby test claimed Evans, Rafael da Silva, Anderson and the night's star man, Nani for good measure. Veteran Neville also picked up a knock and Ryan Giggs couldn't last an hour in right wing.

Add these new problems to Rio Ferdinand, Patrice Evra, Wayne Rooney and long-term crock Wes Brown and you have a situation which most clubs would cite as a reason for their relegation troubles, much less as a minor bump on the road to a six-trophy haul.

Ferguson, of course, is an arrogant man whose ambition cannot be doused. He has the unbending belief in his empire's strength and that attitude filters down to even the most average fringe player. Fletcher, John O'Shea and Ben Foster, to name a few, would be solid mid-table players. But it's that bullish Ferguson confidence in them and their abilities – and the fact that they're not superstars, like the inevitably unsettled Carlos Tevez – which allows them to start every fourth game and perform well beyond their abilities, providing another cog in the Big Red Machine.

The attitude of the collective is contagious. Several of United's imported stars have gone on record admitting that they can't understand much of what their gruff Scottish boss is saying to them, but the power of United clearly goes far beyond mere words. A case in point is the team's belief that a post-Christmas surge was inevitable, if not their right. It's all going according to plan and they're not even conceding goals in the league, never mind dropping points.

Empires, though, all have to fall at some point. The sudden mass exodus to the Carrington treatment tables will obviously pose a problem over the next month. Then there's a few rogue bosses who spend a lot of time plotting Fergie's career assassination: Inter tactician Jose Mourinho, whose side will face United in the Champions League, and Liverpool's Rafael Benitez - Ferguson's primary rival. Both will be ready to pounce on any weakness and will have their troops well drilled and ready to knock the Red Devils from their plinth. Whether they have the cojones when it comes to pulling the trigger and assassinating Europe's footballing dictator Sir Alex remains to be seen.

Even with the injuries, United surely still have a squad which can do the business domestically and a magnificent treble could well be on the cards. There's still Zoran Tošić, Rafael's brother Fabio and more waiting in the wings, ready to fill voids in the squad as soon as they appear. Still, drawing Inter on the continent is a nightmare. An early exit at the hands of the Italian kings is not impossible, although this scenario could make the treble all the more likely.

Will Manchester United's apparent superiority complex be their undoing? Is the current spate of injuries too much to overcome? Or, will United swat away their problems and blaze across the finish line in all their pursuits? Goal.com wants to know what YOU think.
