Koizumi Kyoko to star in “Shokuzai” drama adaptation

Last month, WOWOW announced that it will broadcast a drama mini-series called “Shokuzai,” based on a novel by “Kokuhaku” author Minato Kanae. It has now been revealed that the drama will star actress Koizumi Kyoko (45). Koizumi has not had a lead role in a television series since “Koi wo Nannen Yasundemasu ka” in 2001.
“Shokuzai” tells the story of a mother seeking revenge for the murder of her young daughter 15 years ago, focusing her attention on the four students who witnessed the killer’s face but can’t remember it. Koizumi will play the mother, but the actors playing the students and the rest of the supporting cast have not yet been revealed.
It was already announced that Kurosawa Kiyoshi is directing and writing the screenplay. Koizumi last worked with Kurosawa in the movie “Tokyo Sonata.”
Filming has already been completed. WOWOW plans to broadcast the drama as five episodes starting in January 2012, as part of its WOWOW Prime service. The first episode will be aired for free.

“Ohisama” surpasses “Gegege no Nyoubou”

NHK’s morning drama “Ohisama,” starring Inoue Mao, ended on October 1st. The final episode achieved ratings of 21.6% in the Kanto region and 19.3% in the Kansai region.
Overall, the series averaged 18.8% (Kanto) and 16.5% (Kansai). In the Kanto region, that figure was 1.6 percentage points higher than the previous morning drama “Teppan.” It was also 0.2 points higher than last year’s hit “Gegege no Nyoubou.”
Meanwhile, NHK’s new morning series “Carnation” premiered on October 3rd, and the first episode got 16.1% ratings in the Kanto area, and 16.2% in the Kansai area. In comparison, “Ohisama” started at 18.4% and 15.6% respectively.

Ishihara Satomi to star in adaptation of Higashino Keigo novel

Next month, Ishihara Satomi (24) will star in an NHK drama special called “Shimei to Tamashii no Limit,” adapted from a novel by popular mystery author Higashino Keigo.
The suspenseful story is set in the heart surgery department of a university hospital. Ishihara plays a medical trainee aiming to become a heart surgeon, while holding doubts about the real cause of the death of her father, who died during an operation.
Tachi Hiroshi will play the role of her professor. The supporting cast also features Hayami Mocomichi, Kurashina Kana, Fukikoshi Mitsuru, Nakao Akira, Nagashima Toshiyuki, and Takashima Reiko.
NHK will broadcast “Shimei to Tamashii no Limit” as a two-part series on November 5 and November 12.

Matsushita Nao to star in new drama series, make guest appearance in “Marumo no Okite”

“Gegege no Nyoubou” star Matsushita Nao (26) will lead a Fuji TV drama series this winter, tentatively titled “Hayami-san to Yobareru Hi.” The series is said to be a home drama depicting the growth of a young wife who has been raised as a sheltered child.
Matsushita plays the part of Yuriko, the daughter of a company official and a full-time housewife. Carefully raised, she is capable in studying and in work, but she is completely incapable of doing housework. After falling in love with the eldest son of the Hayami household, they eventually marry and she moves in with his family. However, his family is poor and his mother has disappeared, so she faces much adversity in the Hayami household, which consists of a father and four sons. Embarrassed by her lack of domestic ability, she begins striving to become a capable wife.
The male cast for the show has not yet been announced.
The series will air on Sunday nights at 9:00pm, starting in January. Before the series begins, Matsushita will make an appearance as Yuriko in the “Marumo no Okite” drama special that will air on October 9. The story is set before she gets married, and her character will show up at the izakaya Kujira frequented by the “Marumo” household, where she will have a conversation with Ashida Mana and Suzuki Fuku’s characters.

Nagayama Kento, Nishiyama Maki, Kanai Yuta, Tayama Ryosei added to “Ranma 1/2" cast

Several more cast members have been announced for the live-action “Ranma 1/2” drama special that was announced last week. The newest additions are Nagayama Kento, Nishiyama Maki, Kanai Yuta, and Tayama Ryosei.
Based on the classic manga by Takahashi Rumiko, the drama was already known to be an original script starring Aragaki Yui as Tendo Akane, with Kaku Kento and Natsuna playing the two halves of Saotome Ranma.
Nagayama will play Ranma’s rival Kuno Tatewaki, while Nishiyama will play Akane’s sister Nabiki. Kanai has been cast as Gosunkugi Hikaru.
Tayama will play an original character named Okamada, who is the vice principal of Akane’s school and serves as an antagonist to the main characters.
NTV will broadcast the “Ranma 1/2" drama special this December.

Yuka to star in NHK drama series “Honjitsu wa Taian Nari”

Talento Yuka (31) will be the star of a drama series for the first time in 12 years. She has been selected as the lead of NHK’s “Honjitsu wa Taian Nari,” scheduled to air this winter.
The drama is based on a novel by Tsujimura Mizuki, and is said to combine comedy and suspense. Yuka plays a wedding planner named Takako who has to deal with five weddings at the same venue on a lucky day, but on that morning, a threatening letter arrives demanding that all the ceremonies be canceled. She frantically tries to find the culprit while working to keep the wedding schedule without delay. Meanwhile, the secrets that each of the couples has been hiding come to light one by one.
Yuka’s supporting cast includes Asano Yuko, Ishiguro Ken, Kurokawa Tomoka, Tanimura Mitsuki, Hoshino Mari, Tanaka Naoki, Okada Yoshinori, Shiraishi Miho, Kato Seishiro, Daichi Yasuo, and Oshima Mai.
NHK will broadcast “Honjitsu wa Taian Nari” on Tuesdays at 10:55pm, starting on January 10, 2012. The series will last 10 episodes.

Tokiwa Takako to play Uchino Masaaki’s wife in Chushingura drama

The female cast of TV Tokyo’s 2012 “Shinshun Wide Jidaigeki” has partially been revealed. Tokiwa Takako, Manda Hisako, Itaya Yuka, and Tanaka Misato have been added to the roster, joining lead actor Uchino Masaaki.
As previously announced, the historical drama revolves around the swordsman Horibe Yasubei, who was one of the Forty-seven Ronin. Tokiwa will play Horibe’s wife Hori. This will be the first time that Uchino and Tokiwa have acted together.
Manda has been cast as Riku, the wife of Oishi Kuranosuke (Tachi Hiroshi), while Itaya has been cast as Kaya, the wife of Horibe’s close friend Yoshikawa Sanemon (Murata Takehiro). Tanaka will play Aguri, the wife of Asano Takuminokami (Ichikawa Somegoro).
The 7-hour-long drama will be broadcast on January 2nd. Nakajima Miyuki is providing the theme song.

Aoi Yu, Koike Eiko, Ando Sakura, Ikewaki Chizuru join Koizumi Kyoko in “Shokuzai”

The upcoming drama mini-series “Shokuzai,” starring Koizumi Kyoko, had more of its cast revealed today. Actresses Aoi Yu, Koike Eiko, Ando Sakura, and Ikewaki Chizuru have been officially added to the show.
“Shokuzai” is based on a novel by “Kokuhaku” author Minato Kanae. The story revolves around a mother seeking revenge for the murder of her young daughter Emiri 15 years ago, confronting the four women who had witnessed the killer at the time.
The four women are being played by Aoi, Koike, Ando, and Ikewaki. 15 years earlier, when they were elementary school students, they had been playing with Emiri up until just before her death. They were the first to discover her body, and although they saw the culprit’s face, they were unable to remember it well enough to identify the person. As a result, Emiri’s mother (Koizumi) demanded that they find the killer, or else find a way to atone for themselves to her satisfaction. Now grown up, those women find her words coming back to haunt them as tragedy begins to befall them.
The story is being told in five episodes on WOWOW Prime, starting on January 8. The first episode will be broadcast for free.

Aoyama Noriko returns as “Nogaremono Orin”

TV Tokyo’s historical action drama “Nogaremono Orin” is making a comeback in 2012, five years after the original series. Aoyama Noriko (32) will once again star as the title character, a fugitive member of an assassination group.
“Nogaremono Orin” first aired between October 2006 and March 2007. Set during Tokugawa Ieshige’s reign during the Edo period, the story revolves around the woman Orin, who was part of the assassination group known as the Tesugari-nin that protected Ieshige. However, when she discovers that the group’s leader Uemura Doetsu is manipulating her, she decides to break away from the group and go up against Doetsu.
The show was popular enough to get two special episodes in 2008, and now TV Tokyo is bringing it back for an 11-episode continuation series and a 2-hour special.
Actor Watanabe Dai is joining the show as a new cast member.
“Nogaremono Orin 2” will start airing in January 2012. Sometime that same month, the 2-hour special “Nogaremono Orin: Saishusho” will also be aired.

Yamashita Tomohisa to star in drama series “Saikou no Jinsei no Owarikata”

Former NEWS member Yamashita Tomohisa (26) will star in a TBS drama series this winter. This is his first work since he and Nishikido Ryo (27) left the group last month.
The drama, titled “Saikou no Jinsei no Owarikata ~Ending Planner~,” has Yamashita playing the head of a funeral service shop that deals with bodies brought in by the police, including suicide and murder victims. He reluctantly inherited the shop after his father passed away, but as he learns about the lives of the various deceased people that are brought to him, he begins to mature. Another highlight of the story is his romance with a rookie female detective, though the actress for the part has not yet been announced.
Screenwriter Watanabe Chiho (“Namae wo Nakushita Megami”) is in charge of the script.
Shooting is scheduled to begin in early December. TBS will broadcast “Saikou no Jinsei no Owarikata” on Thursday nights at 9:00pm, starting in January.

Watanabe Ken, Minami Kaho co-star in TV Asahi drama special

Actor Watanabe Ken (52) and actress Minami Kaho (47) will appear together in a TV Asahi drama special next month, titled “Ai Inochi ~Shinjuku Kabukicho Kakekomidera~.” This is their first time acting together since they got married in 2005.
The drama is set in Shinjuku’s Kabukicho district and is inspired by Gen Hidemori, who runs the Japan Social Minority Center, an NPO rescue center in Kabukicho that has served more than 10,000 people in trouble in its 9 years of operation.
Watanabe’s character Hirayama Hidemori, modeled after Gen, was living only in pursuit of money until he learned that he was infected with the HTLV-1 virus, which has been identified as a potential cause of leukemia. As a result, he turns his life around and begins doing volunteer work to help the weak.
Minami plays his wife, who has been living separately from him in Kobe with their children ever since he became burdened with debt from his previous business. Nagasaku Hiromi plays a freelance journalist who is researching Hidemori for a story.
Other cast members include Fubuki Jun, Ogata Naoto, Katase Rino, Ichige Yoshie, Yamamoto Gaku, and Ibu Masato.
Watanabe commented that he and Minami did not discuss their parts with each other. He laughingly remarked, “It was my first experience having two people in the same house reading the same script, and passing the time while separately thinking about our roles. It was a strange feeling.”
“Ai Inochi ~Shinjuku Kabukicho Kakekomidera~” will air sometime in December.

Emi Kurara to star in Fuji TV daytime drama

Former Takarazuka actress Emi Kurara (32) has been chosen to lead the cast of Fuji TV’s upcoming afternoon drama “Suzuko no Koi.” The show will be a biography of the late comedian and actress Miyako Chouchou (real name Hyuuga Suzuko), who passed away in 2000 at the age of 80. The focus will be on her love life, including her relationship with fellow comedian and actor Nanto Yuji.
Fuji TV has assembled several big names for the drama’s cast and staff. Emi will be acting alongside prime-time veterans Asano Yuko and Kataoka Tsunetaro, both of whom have never before appeared in one of these afternoon dramas. Oishi Shizuka (“Second Virgin”) is writing the screenplay, and Matsutoya Yumi is writing a new song to be the show’s theme song.
“Suzuko no Koi” will air on Mondays through Fridays at 1:30pm, beginning January 5th.

Arashi’s Matsumoto Jun to star as detective in Fuji TV’s next “Getsu 9"

Arashi member Matsumoto Jun (28) has been chosen to star in Fuji TV’s next Monday night drama series, titled “Lucky Seven.” This is his second time starring in one of Fuji TV’s “Getsu 9” dramas, after “Natsu no Koi wa Nijiiro ni Kagayaku” in 2010.
The story revolves around a team of seven detectives who work together to solve difficult cases, with Matsumoto playing a rookie named Tokita Shuntaro. So far, Eita (28) and Oizumi Yo (38) have also been announced as part of the team, while the other cast members are still unknown. The team reportedly consists of 4 men and 3 women.
Until now, Matsumoto has mainly starred in love stories targeted at the core female audience between the ages of 20 and 34. This will be his first detective drama, which is also said to be full of action and comedy.
The show will be directed by Sato Shinsuke, the director behind the “GANTZ” live-action movies that starred fellow Arashi member Ninomiya Kazunari. Filming for “Lucky Seven” is scheduled to start in early December.
Fuji TV will broadcast “Lucky Seven” on Mondays at 9:00pm, starting in January.

Kinami Haruka to star in new “Kazoku Hakkei” drama series

This winter, actress Kinami Haruka (26) will take on her first starring role in a drama series. The drama is based on “Kazoku Hakkei,” a 1972 novel by sci-fi author Tsutsui Yasutaka (“Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo”) that was already adapted as a television drama in 1979 and 1986.
Kinami has been cast as Hita Nanase, a housekeeper with the psychic ability to read people’s minds, leading her to uncover the secrets of the households where she works. The character was previously played by Takigawa Yumi and Hori Chiemi.
Kinami entered show business in 2001 when she won Horipro’s New Star Audition. She appeared in the “20th Century Boys” movie series and was the female lead in the movie “Kimi ga Odoru, Natsu.” She has also played supporting roles in various television dramas, including “Yuusha Yoshihiko to Maou no Shiro” this past summer.
The new “Kazoku Hakkei” will be aired in a late night time slot on TBS starting in January. The series will be directed by “20th Century Boys” director Tsutsumi Yukihiko.

Kamikawa Takaya to star in “Stepfather Step” drama series

Actor Kamikawa Takaya (46) has been chosen to star in a new drama series titled “Stepfather Step,” based on the novel of the same name by popular author Miyabe Miyuki.
“Stepfather Step” is about a solitary thief who winds up becoming the “father” of two twins, and as a result, he is forced to give up his life of thievery. But the two children become involved in various troubles in their neighborhood, and the thief also faces suspicion from the twins’ teacher. The story combines mystery and domestic drama, centering on the relationship between the thief and the children.
In the original novel, the children are junior high students, but in the drama series they will be elementary school students played by child actors Shibuya Tatsuki and Shibuya Itsuki. Konishi Manami will play their teacher. Other cast members include Ito Shiro, Hirayama Aya, Sudo Risa, and Watanabe Ikkei.
“Stepfather Step” was first serialized in 1991-1992 in the magazine Shosetsu Gendai before being released as a collected volume in 1993. The novel has sold over 1 million copies total during its 20-year history.
The drama will take over the Monday 8:00pm time slot on TBS, after the historical series “Mitokomon” ends its run. The first episode will be a two-hour special on January 9, 2012.

Higashino Keigo’s “Bunshin” gets drama adaptation

“Bunshin,” a medical suspense novel by bestselling author Higashino Keigo, is being turned into a drama series that starts next month on WOWOW. The story revolves around two identical-looking women uncovering their mysterious past.
The story’s main character Mariko is a woman studying child welfare in Hokkaido. She grew up always doubtful about the love from her mother, who looked nothing like her and who passed away 9 nine years ago. One day, she finds some of her mother’s belongings at a relative’s house, and she heads to Tokyo to seek out the truth behind her birth.
Meanwhile, Futaba is a college student living in Tokyo who is focused on her band. She gets an opportunity to appear on television, though her mother is strongly opposed to it. Naturally, Mariko is shocked when she happens to see Futaba on television, since the two of them look completely alike.
“Bunshin” will be broadcast as a 5-episode series on WOWOW, starting on December 2. The cast has not yet been revealed.

Nishiuchi Mariya, Kiriyama Renn star in “Switch Girl!!” live-action series

Nishiuchi Mariya (17), a model for the fashion magazine Seventeen, will play the lead in a live-action adaptation of the manga series “Switch Girl!!” This will be her first starring role as an actress.
“Switch Girl!!” is a manga series by Aida Natsumi that currently runs in Shueisha’s magazine Margaret and has sold close to 5 million copies total. The story revolves around a high school student named Nika (Nishiuchi) who appears to be a stylish and fashionable girl at school, but that’s really a fake persona that she uses when she’s in public. At home, she “switches off” the facade and her returns to her true slovenly nature. Kiriyama Renn (26) plays the good-looking transfer student Arata, who is Nika’s love interest in the story.
The drama series will begin airing on satellite channel Fuji TV TWO on December 24, which is Nishiuchi’s 18th birthday.

Michishige Sayumi, Tanaka Reina star in “math battle” drama series with other Hello! Project members

Morning Musume members Michishige Sayumi (22) and Tanaka Reina (22) will co-star in a “math battle” drama series this winter, titled “Suugaku?Joshi Gakuen.” This is the first time that either of them has starred in a television series.
The story, developed with the cooperation of the International Mathematical Olympiad in Japan, is set at a specialized math school, where Michishige and Tanaka both take on the roles of “suugaku joshi” (“math girls”). Naturally, the show will incorporate various mathematical functions and formulas into the story and dialogue.
Sakurada Dori (19) has been cast as the only boy in the entire school.
Besides Michishige and Tanaka, other Hello! Project members will appear on the show as rivals. Specifically, the girls will mainly be chosen from Mobekimasu, the combined group that brings together Morning Musume, Berryz Kobo, °Cute, Mano Erina, and S/mileage.
So far, the announced guest stars include Tsugunaga Momoko, Sudo Maasa, Yajima Maimi, Nakajima Saki, Suzuki Airi, Mano Erina, Wada Ayaka, Fukuda Kanon and Tamura Meimi.
NTV will broadcast the series on Wednesday nights at 12:59am, starting on January 11.

Koizumi Kyoko, Nakai Kiichi star in romance drama “Saigo Kara Nibanme no Koi”

Actress Koizumi Kyoko (45) is back in the starring role of a drama series on commercial television for the first time in 11 years. She and Nakai Kiichi (50) will play the leads of Fuji TV’s love story “Saigo Kara Nibanme no Koi,” scheduled to premiere in January 2012.
Koizumi’s last lead role in a drama series was in 2001 in TBS’s “Koi wo Nannen Yasundemasu ka.” This time, she will play a 45-year-old single woman who works as a TV drama producer. Starting to feel anxious about her health and her future, she visits an old house in Kamakura where she intends to live with her friend when they reach old age.
Nakai plays a 50-year-old government worker at Kamakura’s city hall whose wife has passed away. With both of them at a crossroads in their lives, their fateful encounter leads to romance.
The screenplay is being written by Okada Yoshikazu, who last worked with Koizumi and Nakai in the 1995 series “Mada Koi wa Hajimaranai.”
The supporting cast features Iijima Naoko (43), Sakaguchi Kenji (36), and Uchida Yuki (36) as Nakai’s younger siblings.
“Saigo Kara Nibanme no Koi” is scheduled for Thursdays at 10:00pm.

Itao Itsuji, Tanabe Seiichi, Tanaka Kei play detectives in “Deka Kurokawa Suzuki”

Comedian/actor Itao Itsuji (48) will be the star of an NTV drama series next season, titled “Deka Kurokawa Suzuki.” He will play the part of a police detective in a small countryside town, along with Tanabe Seiichi (42) and Tanaka Kei (27) as his subordinates.
Kurokawa Suzuki (Itao) is described as a detective with top-notch reasoning skills, but he also has a very sensitive heart when it comes to his subordinate’s gossip or his wife’s black humor. One of his subordinates is Shiraishi (Tanabe), a detective whose overly positive thinking blinds himself to his own incompetence. The other is Akagi (Tanaka), the only “normal” officer at the police station. Despite having zero teamwork among them, the three of them must solve the brutal cases they encounter in their town.
Actress Tsuruta Mayu has been cast as Kurokawa’s sharp-tongued wife.
The drama is based on Takita Michio’s mystery novels “Inaka no Keiji no Shumi to Oshigoto” and “Inaka no Keiji no Doubutsuki.” Filmmaker Honda Ryuichi will serve as one of the show’s directors, and Omiya Ellie is handling the screenplay.
NTV will air the series on Thursdays at 11:58pm, beginning January 5, 2012.
