RAFA BENITEZ has hauled Javier Mascherano over the coals — and warned circling clubs they are wasting their time eyeing his Anfield players.
Argie midfield maestro Mascherano, 24, stunned Liverpool insiders by admitting he is unsure if he will still be a Kop star next season.
But boss Benitez said: “I talked to him and he is happy here.
“Does he want to leave? I don’t think so. He knows the best option for him at this moment is this club.
“We want to keep our key players, it is the same story with Xabi Alonso.” |

Robbie Fowler to play against Sabah
Local football fans in Kota Kinabalu are in for a treat, especially Liverpool supporters. Former Rhinos star Scott Ollerenshaw, through his company Borneo Sports & Adventure Holidays has arranged for former Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler and his new team, North Queensland Fury to play againts a Sabah Selection side in Likas Stadium on the 27th of May 2009.
North Queensland Fury is a new team competing in the Australian A-League for the upcoming 2009 season. They are based in Townsville, Queensland Australia and recently signed Fowler as their forward.
With full support from SAFA (Sabah FA), the Sabah selection team will also feature national players Indra Putra Mahyuddin and Mohd Nor Farhan from Kelantan who will be donning the Sabah jersey for this special occasion. Also joining them is former Rhinos Australian import Robbie Gaspar and Indonesian national player T. A. Musafry.
The match will certainly see a good turnout for Likas Stadium which is barely half-full when the state team play their league matches nowadays. To ensure good entertainment for the whole night, former Rhinos coach and current Kelantan coach Peter Butler will compete in a penalty shootout with Scott Ollerenshaw. At the moment, Scott is trying to get ex-goalie Khairul Azman to man the posts so this is yet to be confirmed.
During the press conference held this morning, Joehari Ayub of SAFA hopes that with the good atmosphere and the chance of playing with experienced players, the young Sabah players can lift themselves up from the gloomy position of the current Sabah state team currently playing in the second division of the Malaysian league.
Joehari also expressed his thanks to Scott for his effort in this exciting project which will also see some excitement in the local football scene. He also disclosed that Scott and another former player, Yap Wai Loon has orally agreed to help SAFA in discovering new and young talents in all parts of Sabah.
For those who wants to get more of this visit, there is a Corporate Dinner to be held the night before the match, 26th May 2009 at Pacific Sutera which will see Fowler and Ian Ferguson, as speakers for the night. Attendees are also given the chance to forward their questions to the special guests.
