Leeds Rocked By Robins
Mon 26 Nov, 12:15 AM
Steven Gillespie's 86th-minute strike earned Cheltenham a shock 1-0 win over Leeds at a sold-out Whaddon Road.
The Robins' third league victory of the campaign lifted them off the foot of the table and denied Leeds the chance to make up ground on the leading clubs in the division.
Leeds were guilty of missing a host of opportunities, with leading scorer Jermaine Beckford the main culprit.
Beckford struck the crossbar in the first half and fired over with the goal gaping midway through the second period.
But Cheltenham made Leeds pay when debutant goalkeeper David Lucas rushed off his line to head clear a long ball from Andy Lindegaard.
The ball fell to Gillespie, who lifted the ball into an empty net from 30 yards to send the home fans wild and condemn Leeds to their second league defeat of the campaign. |

Premier League Weekend Preview: Round 15
Mushtaq Quraishi looks at all the contests and weighs up all the issues ahead of another packed weekend in the Barclays Premier League....
There are several intriguing issues surrounding this weekend's programme in the Barclays Premier League. How will unbeaten leaders Arsenal respond to their first defeat of the season when they go to rampant Aston Villa on Saturday evening?
And will Manchester United take out their frustration at losing to Bolton last Saturday on Fulham, who go to Old Trafford for the Monday night game? Can Chelsea (at home to West Ham) and Liverpool (at home to Bolton) follow up impressive midweek Champions League wins with maximum points in their pursuit of Arsenal?
Then there are the new managers: no fewer than three lead their new teams into battle for the first time this weekend. Steve Bruce's Wigan. desperate for points, host high-flying Manchester City, while newly-appointed Paul Jewell takes bottom club Derby to the Stadium of Light, where Sunderland will be itching to make amends for last weekend's 7-1 mauling at Everton.
And on Sunday, Alex McLeish, having swapped Scotland for Birmingham, makes his English top-flight bow at White Hart Lane where Spurs will be anxious to preserve their unbeaten record under Juande Ramos. Such has been the turnover of managers lately that Ramos already seems a seasoned Premier League veteran compared with McLeish....
Saturday 1 December
Chelsea v West Ham
Chelsea have been pretty phenomenal since the arrival of Avram Grant. Many will have expected the London side to 慴lip |

Sunday 2 December
Liverpool v Bolton Wanderers
Liverpool re-ignited their hopes of going through in the Champions League after a tense 4-1 win over Porto. After seventy minutes, it looked as if the Reds were all but out of the competition but a quick flurry of goals gave them hope. Prior to that, the Reds brushed aside Newcastle 3-0 in the league.
Liverpool are in top form and the manager also has a point to prove to the clubs American owners. Liverpool have all the quality to comfortably see this game through. In fact, I think Rafa may controversially rest star striker Fernando Torres for this match!
Bolton beat Champions Manchester United last time out so will have all the confidence in the world ahead of this game. Gary Megson is doing a good job at the Reebok and the players now look more comfortable and have some belief. Bolton now look set to stay out relegation trouble. Another similar game to last week抯 could cause a surprise at Anfield, but Bolton will have to be at their very best if they hope for this.
Even though Bolton are improving, I think Liverpool will be favourites to win this match especially at home. They have scored 17 goals in four matches and will be looking to add to that impressive glut of goals. They should be wary of Bolton抯 physical threat, nonetheless Liverpool should ease through this game.
Prediction: 2-0
Tottenham Hotspur v Birmingham City
Spurs are still unbeaten under new boss Juande Ramos and a midweek European win should give them even more confidence after a terrible start to the season. Tottenham have much improved in the league and are now looking to break into the top ten for the first time this campaign.
Ramos has mainly changed his tactics for his strikers and is giving all of them a chance to show their talent. Bent is shining and Berbatov now looks more committed to the side than he did earlier this season. Ramos has made a huge improvement to the squad since his arrival and will look to continue the good form into this game.
Birmingham now have a fabulous manager in Alex McLeish who has been fantastic for Rangers and Scotland. I think he will make a big impact on the club and will save them from relegation this season. Nevertheless, as always, it will take the new manager some time to change the team. However I do expect Birmingham to keep that same battling spirit for this game as they had under Steve Bruce.
I think this game will finish in a draw because both sides have new managers and styles of play. Birmingham are quite strong and are determined to cause an upset in every game and I expect much the same here. Tottenham could be slightly tired after their midweek adventure.
Prediction: 1-1
Monday 2 December
Manchester United v Fulham
Manchester United抯 shock defeat to Bolton last week left them further behind Arsenal in the title race. The Red Devils must win this game to keep the pressure on the Gunners. Rooney is still missing but Ronaldo will surely make up for his absence as he showed during the midweek Champions League win. Louis Saha is unconvincing up front but Carlos Tevez can also make up for that. All in all, last week抯 defeat was out of the ordinary and United will surely get back to winning ways here.
Fulham could only draw to Blackburn last time out as they again dropped a lead twice during the game. Apparently, if only the first 45 minutes counted of every game this season, Fulham would top the table. But alarmingly, if only the second periods were counted the Cottagers would be way down in the relegation zone!
Such has been the inconsistency in the team during games. The side always lose concentration during the last ten minutes of matches or after they take the lead. Fulham simply have to hang onto a lead just to rejuvenate some much needed confidence into the side.
United are much stronger than Fulham and will be expected to win this match. I do not expect Fulham to take the lead in this game and cannot see them holding United at all. Saying that, it will be interesting to see what Fulham do do if they score first. We will have to wait and see. Until then, I抦 going for a comfortable United win.
Prediction: 2-0 |
