Drogba: I Wanted To Quit Chelsea & Football
2008 has not been particularly kind to Didier Drogba.
The Chelsea targetman, once regarded as the most dangerouscentre-forward in the Premier League, has battled injury anddisciplinary problems all year long, not to mention intense speculationover his future.
Further compounding the 30-year-old's woes was the death of hisgrandmother, which brought about something of an existential crisis.
"I was very, very close to her and it really made me suffer," he said in The Sun. "I had the feeling that all my childhood memories were going with her. I became old suddenly.
"This made me ask a few questions to myself. I wondered what I wasrunning after. I said to myself that it was pretty useless to run afterresults, stats or rewards."
Drogba claimed that he received little help from Stamford Bridge andwas left alone to deal with his grief, a situation which sapped him ofthe desire to play.
"It抯 true that I didn抰 feel a great support. But that didn抰 worryme really. For a few weeks I didn抰 have my head tuned into football atall," he continued.
"I didn抰 want to hear about targets or ambition. I felt totallyswitched off. For the first time, I had lost my passion for football. Iwas ordinary. I didn抰 want to fight.
"All summer, I felt bad. I am not looking for excuses. I just admit that, for a while, I put football on the back-burner."
Lonely
Last season ended badly for Drogba. After steering the Blues pastLiverpool and into the Champions League final, he saw red in Moscowafter a confrontation with Manchester United's Nemanja Vidic.
Things got worse when pre-season rolled around, as the Ivory Coaststar reported for duty with a serious knee injury which would keep himout of action until September.
And the former Olympique Marseille player admitted that he feltisolated during his rehabilitation, due in no small part to the factseveral of his mates have left West London in recent years.
"I felt lonely when the season started in July. Everybody was obsessed with winning their place in the team," Drogba said.
"And I was stuck in the fitness room when the group left for a pre-season tour. I was alone with the machines.
"I didn抰 really have anyone to talk to. Every year I have been losing a close friend.
"There was Geremi, then William Gallas, then Makelele. It抯 a lot. I went through a big moment of loneliness."
Hungry
But after a few months of soul-searching and his gradual, if notentirely smooth, reintroduction into the Chelsea first-team, 'The Drog'is finally starting to find his form.
And he revealed that it was his team-mates' wavering belief in hisabilities that spurred him re-scale the heights he hit under JoseMourinho's management.
"I looked at my career. I was tired," Drogba said. "But I have theconviction now that I can come back stronger. I am really hungry.
"What opened my eyes was the way some people at the club looked at me. I really felt confidence wasn抰 the same.
"It wasn抰 great to feel and I remarked that some of them didn抰really believe in my capacity to come back to the highest level. But Ican抰 be angry at them.
"They were right to wonder where the Drogba of 2007 was gone. He isvery close! Now I am better in my body and head, everything will comeback."

CHELSEA'S Didier Drogba this entered this season having lost his passion for football, the Ivory Coast striker told French media.
'This summer, I no longer had a head for football. I had completely lost the fire. I no longer wanted to hear talk of targets or ambition. I felt completely extinguished. For the first time in my career, I had lost the passion for football. I was lost,' Drogba said in an interview with France Football magazine published on Tuesday.
Drogba, who joined Chelsea from Marseille in 2004, said he understood why Chelsea manager Luiz Felipe Scolari is leaving him more on the bench this season in favour of Nicolas Anelka, currently the Premier League's top scorer.
'For the moment, I can only keep quiet,' France Football quoted Drogba as saying in extracts of the interview posted on its website.
'It is not because I have been here for more than four years that I have a right to make demands to be in the starting lineup. At the moment, there's a guy who is hot and racking up goals. I must wait my turn.'
But he suggested that Scolari pair him with Anelka more often in attack.
'I have always said that I was happy that Nicolas came to Chelsea. But I still cannot understand why managers are afraid to put us together,' Drogba said. -- AP |
