Kwek Yu, Yiap Soon raih emas ping pong
Oleh Mohd Amin Jalil

GANDINGAN mantap dua pasangan yang pernah beraksi di peringkat Majlis Sukan Sekolah-Sekolah Malaysia (MSSM) bagi acara ping pong muncul pemenang pingat emas pertama kategori terbuka Kejohanan Sukan Negeri Sembilan (Suknes) yang memasuki hari kedua, semalam.

Gandingan Yap Kwek Yu dan Chew Yiap Soon dari Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Chan Hwa Seremban mempamerkan persembahan mantap ketika menundukkan pasangan Chua Boon Sing-Ng Teck Xian, 3-1 untuk merangkul pingat emas kategori beregu lelaki ping pong di Dewan Majlis Sukan Negeri (MSN), semalam.

Pingat gangsa diraih pasangan Yong Jian Sing-Ng Boon Han yang mengalahkan David Wee-Chew Yiap Keng, 3-1.

Dalam kategori perempuan, pasangan Yaw Pic Ling-Loh Pooi Yeok menewaskan gandingan Pau Fong Ling-Lee Qiu Er, 3-0 manakala pasangan Bong Yu Jing-Eu Yun Seng memenangi gangsa selepas menewaskan Ng Bee Yin-Ten Hue San, 3-1.

揝eramai 42 pemain lelaki dan 35 perempuan mengambil bahagian acara ping pong membabitkan kategori perseorangan dan beregu termasuk beberapa atlit muda berusia 10 tahun,

North Korean Kum-song turns party pooper

KUALA LUMPUR: North Korean Hong Kum-song broke Malaysian hearts en route to winning the singles title in the National Table Tennis League Grand Finals at the OCM Indoor Sports Arena here yesterday.

The North Korean, who is a sparring player for the national men抯 team, dashed former national player and fourth seed Choo Sim Guan抯 hopes of winning the title for Inti College yesterday.

Kum-song, only seeded 16th, lost the first game 5-11 but his ferocious drives saw him coming back strongly to win 11-6, 11-4, 12-10, 14-16, 11-6 and bag the title for Budi JS.

Kum-song had defeated national player and fifth seed Chai Kian Beng, also from Inti College, in a similar come-from-behind fashion in the semi-finals. The 22-year-old Korean edged Kian Beng 11-13, 11-9, 11-9, 11-4, 4-11, 11-5.

Kum-song: The men抯 singles champion.

Sim Guan, the national champion in 1999, earned his place in the final with a 9-11, 11-8, 11-8, 11-9, 11-8 win over former international Eng Tian Syh of DC Hydraulics.

Kum-song had defeated Singapore抯 national player and top seed Qi Quan Cai 11-5, 11-9, 11-9 to reach the last four earlier.

Second seeded Ng Sock Khim of Inti College was eliminated in the second round by Promptcon抯 Chee Kian Ee. Sock Khim, who is a national women抯 team player, lost 7-11, 7-11, 9-11.

The North Korean played for the national team before coming to Malaysia on a one-year contract to help lift the standard of the national men paddlers in January this year.

And he attributed his experience to helping him become the champion this year.

揑 lost the opening game but was able to learn the playing style of my opponents quickly and control the pace of the match after that,

Our paddlers to undergo two-month training stint in China

KUALA LUMPUR: A two-month stint in China will be the best preparation for the Malaysian table tennis team in their target to grab at least one silver and two bronze medals in the Korat SEA Games this December.

Table Tennis Association of Malaysia (TTAM) executive director Soong Poh Wah said the team, comprising four men and four women, would leave for Zheng Ting, in the northern part of China, on Sept 24 for training.

Sock Khim to lead Asian challenge in Beh抯 absence

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia will be without the services of top female player Beh Lee Wei in the 18th Asian Table Tennis Championships, which will be held in Yangzhou from Sept 17-23.

The current national champion withdrew from the squad yesterday to allow her time to recover from a back muscle tear injury.

In her absence, Ng Sock Khim will spearhead the women抯 challenge along with Chiu Soo Jiin and Gam Gaik Ping.

The men抯 challenge will be led by Mohd Shakirin together with Kho Mao Sheng and Chai Kian Beng. Another member of the men抯 team, Goon Wei Cheng, has to withdraw after undergoing an appendicitis operation on Friday.

The absence of Lee Wei will certainly be felt because of her ability to play well in both the singles and doubles.

However, national coach Hao Peishu said that it was better that they left her out of the team in view of the SEA Games in Korat in December.

揥e do not want her to aggravate the injury because she has an important role to play for us in fighting for medals in both the team and individual competitions at the SEA Games,

China set for clean sweep

GUANGZHOU: China will take on arch rivals South Korea for the world men's team table tennis championship title after the Asian powers won their semi-final showdowns here yesterday.

China, undefeated champions since 2000, easily downed Hong Kong in their semi but South Korea faced a ferocious challenge from underdogs Japan, whose young charges refused to lie down.

The final today will be a repeat of the last world championships two years ago, with South Korea relishing the chance to seek revenge against China.

Olympic champion Ryu Seung-min said South Korea fancied their chances against China, as their star-studded team was under pressure to perform.

揥e have our reasons for thinking we can beat China. South Korea are strong enough for one and the Chinese players are nervous and pressed psychologically to do well here,

hai akak..oo main pingpong gak ye...hehehe..ganbatte...

bdasarkan ape yg akak cakap mesti akak pegang bet style forehand...sbb forehand perlukan pemegang panjang..same ngan sal la...

salah satu teknik yg diajar..tgk tangan pemain tu mase dia start serve bola..iks tak reti lak nk buat ayatnye...

pe kate akak mintak diorang ajar chop..latihan bt secara stroke..
amik bola scara backhand sedap gak ni.klu pandai yg ni payah gak lawan nak angkat smash tu..

- satu lagi sal nasihatkan cube serve serendah yg mungkin...
