Scales: Time for Jol to leave Spurs
tribalfootball.com - October 23, 2007
Former Tottenham defender John Scales says Martin Jol must go after Monday's defeat at Newcastle.
Scales said: "There has to be a change now because it's become a totally untenable situation.
"It has led us to a point where Jol is a dead man walking. It does just seem a matter of time.
"The board have clearly indicated they haven't got any confidence in him because they've looked elsewhere. That critically undermines the players' confidence in the club.
"The club are disorganised and it's sad because they've got a great squad."

[quote] Juande Ramos in at Spurs as Jol is sacked
By Martin Smith and John Ley
Last Updated: 12:51am BST 26/10/2007
Martin Jol was last night sensationally sacked as Tottenham Hotspur manager before the 2-1 Uefa Cup loss against Getafe at White Hart Lane with Sevilla coach Juande Ramos set to be named as his replacement. Ramos is expected to take over by the beginning of next week with former Tottenham midfielder Gus Poyet as his No 2.
Jol's assistant, Chris Hughton, was also sacked, and Clive Allen and Alex Inglethorpe were named as caretaker managers.
Spurs to replace Martin Jol with Juande Ramos
The old in out: Martin Jol's tenure at Spurs comes to an end with the appointment of Juande Ramos
Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy said: "For me, Martin and Chris' departure is regrettable. Our greatest wish was to see results turn in our favour and for there to be no need for change. We feel honoured that Martin has been manager at our club, having seen us qualify twice for Europe.
"Chris has been with us since 1977, bar a three-year period, both as player and coach, and he has been an excellent ambassador for the club. They have been professional, popular and respected members of the coaching staff and there will always be a warm welcome for them both at the Lane."
Despite the chairman's warm words it was a humiliating evening for Jol who watched his side suffer another dismal defeat. On a night of high emotion the fans sang his name loudly. He said: "I can understand the position of the club in light of the results. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time here. Tottenham Hotspur is a special club and I want to thank the terrific staff and players. For me the fans were always amazing with their support so I would also like to say thank you |

SACKED BY TXT
EXCLUSIVE Jol found out he had lost job by text message DURING game
Martin Jol discovered he had been sacked by text message during Tottenham's UEFA Cup defeat to Getafe.
The Dutchman went into the game knowing he was on his way out.
But he only discovered that the board had decided to axe him when a friend sent a message to a member of the coaching staff on the Spurs bench. Tottenham were last night close to thrashing out a deal with Sevilla for Juande Ramos.
He has agreed a staggering |

Chelsea v City: Player ratings
Chris Bailey
27/10/2007
HART - Not at fault for any of the goals and might have expected better of defence. Likely to be rested on Wednesday 5
CORLUKA - Might have been stronger for the third goal but by then the game had gone beyond Blues 5
RICHARDS - Caught out of position a couple of times and got involved in unnecessary argument with Lampard 4
DUNNE - Stemmed the tide as best he could for half an hour but even he was washed away by Chelsea brilliance 5
GARRIDO - Exposed as he never has been before but wasn't the only one 4
IRELAND - Didn't offer much in way of defensive cover and missed great first half chance from 18 yards 5
HAMANN - Plenty of hefty tackles but there was a lack of coordination in City side and he suffered too 5
ELANO - Some elegant touches but didn't see anywhere near enough of the ball to worry the home side 5
JOHNSON - Anyone would have looked distinctly average against Lampard on this form. Tried until the end 5
PETROV - Couple of free kicks provided off-key City's best threat but Cech denied him a consolation 5
SAMARAS - Asked to lead the line but not yet physically ready for job. Ball came back too quickly and too often 4
SUBS:
Vassell (for Ireland 63) - Used pace when he could 5
Ball (for Hamann 66) - Looked sprightly enough 5
Bianchi (for Elano 73) - Needed the run out 5 |
