Fergie Defends Rotation, Slams Critics
Sir Alex Ferguson has defended his decision to rest several key players against Chelsea at the weekend, insisting it was a necessary precaution if Manchester United are to defeat Barcelona this week.
The likes of Argentine international Carlos Tevez and PFA Player of the Year Cristiano Ronaldo were rested for United抯 trip to Stamford Bridge, and although the latter came on in the second half for the injured Wayne Rooney, the Red Devils went down 2-1.
But Ferguson claims it would have been impossible to play his strongest line-up in both Saturday抯 Premier League fixture and Tuesday抯 Champions League semi-final.
"There was no way I could play the same team in both games," he said. "I had to give us the best possible chance of reaching the final."
"This club should have had more success in Europe so it was very easy for me to make those changes on Saturday."
Past
United have now failed to win their last three games, having drawn 0-0 at Camp Nou last week in the first leg of their semi-final with Barcelona prior to their defeat at Chelsea.
The string of results means not only must the Red Devils win outright (or else secure an unlikely second goalless draw) against Barca to progress to the final, but they are now level on points with Chelsea as the Premier League race draws toward its close.
But Ferguson is confident that his side can win their last two league games to secure the title, even though he feels they have been hard done by at times.
"We have this semi-final, then a home game on Saturday (against West Ham) and a game against Wigan away - disaster!" Ferguson said.
"Am I worried? Not at all. We should be sitting here as champions of the league.
"I think decisions, bad decisions have gone against us. But it does not matter about those decisions now.
"When we signed on in August, it was to play 38 league matches and we need to win the last two to win the league. So be it.
"No matter what has happened, terrible performances or great performances, bad decisions, that's in the past."
Incentive
The Scot was furious with the penalty decision that allowed Michael Ballack to strike home his second goal and secure victory for the Blues, but he insists he and the team must look forward rather than dwell in past wrongs.
"There was a lot of disappointment in the dressing room at the time up at Chelsea, especially in the manner which we lost," he explained.
"But with the incentive of a big game you put that behind you quickly. The intensity of Monday's training session reflected that.
"It will be a well-balanced game, more open than it was at the Nou Camp and it could go either way, but I think we're going into the game with a marvellous chance.
"Barcelona will play the same system, in the same way, playing that passing carousel where you get dizzy. It's the same all the time and it won't change."
