Vidic's knee injury mars United's night

Sir Alex Ferguson's jubilation after an accomplished 2-0 victory for Manchester United, a performance he described as one of the finest of his 21 years in charge, was tarnished by the news that Nemanja Vidic may have suffered a serious injury.
The defender twisted his knee 34 minutes into a victory that means United are all but assured of qualifying for the Champions League semi-finals. The Serbian international centre-half left Roma's stadium on crutches amid concerns it might be ligament damage.

Fergie's fingers crossed for Vidic

Sir Alex Ferguson says he is praying that Nemanja Vidic's knee injury, which forced his withdrawal from Manchester United's 2-0 victory over Roma, is not too serious.
Vidic missed crucial Champions League games last term with a broken collarbone and did not look fit when returning for the quarter final second leg against Milan which United lost 3-0.

Though Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney get more of the headlines, the centre back pairing of Rio Ferdinand and Vidic has been just as important this season and Ferguson is dearly hoping that he does not have to juggle about his backline.
"It's a knee injury - we're just praying it's not anything other than a nerve injury," Ferguson told ITV.
Ferguson declared himself pleased with the victory but felt he could have eased his side's victory by being more tactically astute.
"It's a very good team we played against of course," Ferguson added.
"We had to defend really well at times. We had some lucky breaks in the second half - they could have scored a couple.
"I should have put Wayne Rooney through the middle quicker. I waited too long.
"We didn't lose a goal, which was really vital. It's a fantastic scoreline for us and I'm very, very pleased."

Fergie frets over Vidic

Sir Alex Ferguson is 'praying' Nemanja Vidic did not suffer a serious injury in Manchester United's 2-0 win over Roma.

Vidic was hurt after half-an-hour of the UEFA Champions League first-leg tie at Stadio Olimpico after landing awkwardly following a header.
He was taken off and replaced by John O'Shea, with the Serbian centre-half due to undergo a scan on the knee problem on Wednesday.
Ferguson is hoping it is not a serious problem, but is reluctant to suggest how long Vidic may be missing.
"I pray it is not serious, because he is such an integral part of our team," said Ferguson
"We think it might just be a nerve injury, but we can't be sure at this moment."
Vital experience
The United manager also praised the contribution of keeper Edwin van der Sar, who has been struggling with a groin injury of late.
He added: "He's had one or two injuries - which have given us a bit of concern - but he came through the game well.
"Edwin showed why he has 120 caps. His experience is vital.
