Analysis: Comparing the points systems

For the first time in the sport’s history, 2010 saw Formula 1 award World Championship points to the top ten race finishers. But did you know that, under the previous scoring system, Lewis Hamilton would beaten Mark Webber to third place overall and Jaime Alguersuari would not have celebrated his first F1 points?...

Comparisons of the points systems have been a hot topic this season, although GPUpdate.net’s mathematics confirm just how tight F1 2010 would have remained, regardless of the scoring structure in place.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
How the actual 2010 season finished up:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

TOP 10 SCORING SYSTEM

Winner 25
Second 18
Third 15
Fourth 12
Fifth 10
Sixth 8
Seventh 6
Eight 4
Ninth 2
Tenth 1

DRIVERS’ CHAMPIONSHIP

1. Sebastian Vettel – 256
2. Fernando Alonso – 252
3. Mark Webber – 242
4. Lewis Hamilton – 240
5. Jenson Button – 214
6. Felipe Massa – 144
7. Nico Rosberg – 142
8. Robert Kubica – 136
9. Michael Schumacher – 72
10. Rubens Barrichello – 47
11. Adrian Sutil – 47
12. Kamui Kobayashi – 32
13. Vitaly Petrov – 27
14. Nico Hülkenberg – 22
15. Vitantonio Liuzzi – 21
16. Sébastien Buemi – 8
17. Pedro de la Rosa – 6
18. Nick Heidfeld – 6
19. Jaime Alguersuari – 5

CONSTRUCTORS’ CHAMPIONSHIP

1. Red Bull-Renault – 498
2. McLaren-Mercedes – 454
3. Ferrari – 396
4. Mercedes GP – 214
5. Renault – 163
6. Williams-Cosworth – 69
7. Force India-Mercedes – 68
8. Sauber-Ferrari – 44
9. Toro Rosso-Ferrari – 13
10. Lotus-Cosworth – 0
11. Hispania-Cosworth – 0
12. Virgin-Cosworth – 0

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
How things would look under the scoring system of the previous seven seasons:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

TOP 8 SCORING SYSTEM

Winner 10
Second 8
Third 6
Fourth 5
Fifth 4
Sixth 3
Seventh 2
Eighth 1

DRIVERS’ CHAMPIONSHIP

1. Sebastian Vettel – 104
2. Fernando Alonso – 101
3. Lewis Hamilton – 100
4. Mark Webber – 97
5. Jenson Button – 87
6. Felipe Massa – 57
7. Nico Rosberg – 55

14. Nico Hülkenberg – 6
15. Vitantonio Liuzzi – 5
16. Pedro de la Rosa 2
17. Sébastien Buemi - 1
18. Nick Heidfeld – 1

Notable effects in comparison with actual 2010 results:

- Hamilton moves ahead of Webber for P3
- Barrichello and Sutil remain level on points for P10 and P11
- De la Rosa moves ahead of Buemi for P16 and scores more points than Sauber replacement Nick Heidfeld, as opposed to level-pegging
- Alguersuari would not have scored his first F1 points

CONSTRUCTORS’ CHAMPIONSHIP

1. Red Bull-Renault – 201
2. McLaren-Mercedes – 187
3. Ferrari – 158

- Toro Rosso would score only a single point, equalling its lowest points haul to date (2006 – the team’s first season)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
How things would look under the scoring system of 1991-2002:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

TOP 6 SCORING SYSTEM

Winner 10

Fourth 3
Fifth 2
Sixth 1

DRIVERS’ CHAMPIONSHIP

11. Adrian Sutil – 5
12. Vitaly Petrov – 3
13. Kamui Kobayashi – 1
14. Nico Hülkenberg – 1
15. Vitantonio Liuzzi – 1

Notable effects in comparison with actual 2010 results:

- Only the top nine drivers would move into double figures
- Hamilton would draw level with Webber, although the Australian would retain P3 due to having four races wins to Hamilton’s three
- Barrichello would score more points than Sutil for P10, as opposed to level-pegging
- Petrov would move ahead of Kobayashi for P12, as the Japanese draws level with the points sums of Hülkenberg and Liuzzi
- Buemi, de la Rosa, Heidfeld and Alguersuari would all fail to score

CONSTRUCTORS’ CHAMPIONSHIP

1. Red Bull-Renault – 160
2. McLaren-Mercedes – 137

12. Virgin-Cosworth – 0

Notable effects in comparison with actual 2010 results:

- Williams would still beat Force India to P6 by a single point
- Sauber would score only a single point
- Toro Rosso would fail to score

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
How things would look in the top five of the Drivers' Championship under Bernie Ecclestone’s proposed medals system, which would handed out awards of gold, silver and bronze to podium finishers:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Sebastian Vettel – 5 gold, 2 silver, 3 bronze but 3 fourth places
2. Fernando Alonso – 5 gold, 2 silver, 3 bronze and 2 fourth places

4. Lewis Hamilton – 3 gold
5. Jenson Button – 2 gold

FIA lists six teams with 2011 driver vacancies
By Motorsport.com/GMM

Six teams are yet to confirm their full driver lineups for the 2011 season, according to the official entry list published on Tuesday by F1's governing body.

Only the top four teams as well as Sauber and Lotus have lodged FIA entries naming two race drivers.

One vacancy is at Renault alongside Robert Kubica, although Vitaly Petrov is expected to be retained for a second season.

Venezuelan Pastor Maldonado is yet to be announced at Williams, and Force India failed to nominate a single driver, with Adrian Sutil, Tonio Liuzzi, Paul di Resta and Nico Hulkenberg all reportedly in the running.

Toro Rosso's lineup is also officially unconfirmed, even though the Faenza based team have said Sebastien Buemi and Jaime Alguersuari are staying, alongside Australian rookie Daniel Ricciardo in a Friday practice role.

Heikki Kovalainen and Jarno Trulli have been listed by Lotus, whose entry has been lodged as 'Team Lotus' amid speculation the Malaysian team might change its name before the start of next season.

Similarly, Renault is still officially 'Renault F1 Team', but Group Lotus could step in as a title and naming sponsor, even though that change could compromise its 2010 Concorde Agreement prize money.

Timo Glock is expected to stay at Virgin, but the British team - now renamed Marussia Virgin Racing in deference to its new Russian supercar co-owner - has not listed a single race driver.

Ecclestone: New F1 teams' struggles are Mosley's fault
Wed, 01 Dec 11:10:58 2010

F1 commercial rights-holder Bernie Ecclestone has laid the blame for the struggles experienced by the top flight’s three newcomers in 2010 squarely at the feet of former FIA President Max Mosley.

Having only recently derided the efforts of Lotus and particularly Virgin and Hispania (HRT) as ‘an embarrassment’ and chastising the trio as ‘cripples’ that have been a blight on the sport and ‘do nothing for us’ [see separate story – click here], Ecclestone has now not uncharacteristically seemingly had a change of view.

“As for the new teams, their problems weren’t their fault in all fairness,” the 80-year-old – who is currently recovering from a vicious mugging in central London last week – wrote in the foreword to The Official Formula 1 Season Review 2010. “It was really Max Mosley’s fault, telling them they could come in and be contenders for £30 million – but they’re here now and, provided they don’t walk around with begging bowls, it’s good to have them.”

Ecclestone was also quick to praise the work of Mosley’s successor at the head of F1’s governing body, former Ferrari team principal Jean Todt – a man whose more conciliatory approach to leadership has resulted in a far more amicable and mutually constructive relationship with the sport’s teams than the somewhat confrontational manner of his controversial predecessor.

“Jean is a completely different animal to Max,” mused the Formula One Management (FOM) chief executive. “I had dinner with him the other night and we were talking about it – he’s visited 51 countries this year, so he’s been on the road a bit. In fairness, he’s left F1 to get on with it, which is good.”

Official: Maldonado joins Williams

Pastor Maldonado will race for Williams next year, the Grove-based outfit confirmed today. The announcement means that the British squad has now finalised its line-up for 2011, after Rubens Barrichello inked a deal to stay on for a further season last month.

Maldonado, who clinched the GP2 Series title in 2010 and who replaces Nico Hülkenberg, had been tipped to make the move for some time now, as it is understood he brings significant sponsorship to boost the teams’ coffers.

The 25-year-old goes to the outfit with nearly 2,000 kilometres of F1 testing mileage under his belt having driven on all four days in Abu Dhabi recently, one with Williams and three with Hispania.

He will make his debut in the team’s 2011 race car, the Williams Cosworth FW33, in February.

“I feel very privileged that Williams has selected me as one of their race drivers,” said the Venezuelan-born man. “It is a great way to end what has already been an amazing year for me. I tested with the team in Abu Dhabi, but can’t wait to start working with everyone properly to be in the best possible shape going into next year.

“I will be doing my best over the winter to prepare myself, and I know the team will be working hard to ensure a successful season.

“2011 will be the first time in nearly thirty years that a Venezuelan has driven a F1 car so I will be looking to get some good results in return for the support my country has given me to help get me to this position today.”

Team Principal Frank Williams meanwhile revealed that Maldonado first caught his eye back in 2007 when he drove a ‘masterful’ race at Monaco.

“Since then, he has regularly reminded us of his unquestionable talent with some skilful wins, particularly during this year’s GP2 championship, taking an unsurpassed record of six successive victories,” Williams continued. “Of course, we already know Pastor from the time he spent with the team at the Abu Dhabi test, but we are very much looking forward to developing his talent over the winter and a fruitful season with him next year.”

More to come from Kobayashi - Sauber

Peter Sauber has hailed Kamui Kobayashi and has said the Japanese driver has ‘progressed wonderfully’ well this year - his first full-season at the pinnacle of the sport, after making his debut at the end of 2009 with Toyota.

Kobayashi was arguably one of the drivers’ of the season and despite his inexperience he notched up 32 points in the Ferrari-powered Sauber C29, as well as pulling off a number of very memorable overtaking manoeuvres.

“Kamui inspires us all within the team. His refreshing, attacking style really puts a smile on your face. You can tell from reactions in the stands that the F1 fans love him too; his overtaking moves are always great to watch,” Sauber said.

“However, it would be doing him an injustice to only focus on this aspect of his driving. Kamui is also a very clever driver and understands how to put a pre-defined strategy into action. He’s progressed wonderfully well this year and I’m certain that there’s more to come from him in the future.

“When I signed him a year ago, I had to put up with critical comments from some experts. But my gut feeling told me that Kamui was something special. And today I’m just delighted to have him in the team.”

Kobyashi will be paired with rookie Sergio Pérez in 2011 and while some have suggested this is a bit of a gamble, Sauber isn’t concerned.

“I’m confident that we’re going into next year in good shape from a driver point of view. Kamui has made big steps forward this year and I have no doubt that he will continue to grow with his new responsibility.

“Sergio is also brimming with talent. For him, it’s a question of learning quickly. Here, he can pick things up from Kamui in the same way that Kamui did from Pedro [de la Rosa] and Nick [Heidfeld].

“Plus, it’s worth remembering that 2001 was one of the most successful years to date for Sauber – and that season we had a rookie by the name of Kimi Räikkönen alongside Nick, who was in only his second year in Formula 1, as our drivers,” Sauber added.

Williams tips Webber to bounce back

Sir Frank Williams has rubbished talk that Mark Webber might have blown his only chance to win the F1 Drivers’ title and he reckons the Aussie could come back even stronger next season, spurred on by this year’s failure.

Webber eventually ended up third in the 2010 FIA Formula One Drivers’ Championship, a poor end to the season dropping him behind his team-mate and new World Champion, Sebastian Vettel, as well as Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso.

Frank has faith though that his former driver could yet get the job done, emulating Alan Jones, who was the last Aussie to win the F1 title back in 1980.

"You can't say Mark Webber has lost his big chance of winning the title because he could come back even stronger,” Williams told ESPNF1. “It's probable that he has had his best chance. But all these racing drivers are remarkable individuals and you should never underestimate them.

“It depends how competitive his car is next year too. I know from experience that Red Bull have a genius working for them in Adrian Newey and he's made a big difference to them this season.”

Despite backing Webber though, Williams added that in his view, Vettel, Lewis Hamilton and Robert Kubica are the three drivers’ that he currently rates the most.

"I'm not saying it just because he's the World Champion but I've always rated Vettel very highly indeed. He could win many titles,” Williams continued.  “And I think him, Lewis Hamilton and perhaps Robert Kubica in the right car might surprise everybody.”

As for Fernando Alonso, Williams was less complimentary: “I'm not really a big fan of Fernando. He often looks a bit sullen, rarely acknowledges anybody and seems very uncommunicative.

"He's brilliant at racing cars but seems to have no animation about him,” Williams summed-up.

‘Silverstone Wing’ continues to take shape

Construction work continues in Northamptonshire of the brand-new ‘Silverstone Wing’, which is set to become the landmark of the British Grand Prix venue as the new pit and paddock complex opens ahead of the 2011 season.

The new name has been handed to the complex following meetings for circuit owners the British Racing Drivers’ Club (BRDC), with the facilities – located on the new start/finish straight between Club and Abbey corners – set to become the new heart of the track.

“‘The Silverstone Wing’ is a highly appropriate name,” explains Richard Phillips, Managing Director of Silverstone Circuits Limited, at the setting which is a former World War II airfield.

“‘Flight’ and ‘velocity’ were key themes incorporated into the design brief and the streamlined form of the new building conjures up the impression of speed, dynamic motion and the grace of a bird’s wing in full flight.”

Phillips added that the name arrives thanks to inspiration from over 4,000 members of the public who submitted suggestions in a recent competition.

“Many of the competition entrants suggested names that included the word ‘wing’ or related to types of birds,” he continued. “After careful deliberation by the Silverstone team the entries were whittled down to just 20 names, which were then presented to the BRDC Board for discussion at the November Board Meeting.”
