Greaves: Anyone But United Or Chelsea

Former England star Jimmy Greaves has echoed the sentiments of fans up and down the country by praying that a team other than Manchester United or Chelsea win this year's FA Cup.

In what is supposed to be the most romantic of all competitions, one of the big four has lifted the FA Cup every year since Everton upset Manchester United 1-0 in the 1995 final.

With Liverpool and Arsenal eliminated in Round 5, Chelsea and United - last year's finalists - are again overwhelming favourites for honours, especially since they've been drawn apart in the quarter-finals.

Cup Magic Is Dead

"For me, this year抯 competition is pivotal," wrote former Tottenham, Chelsea and AC Milan striker Greaves in The Sun.

"Manchester United and Chelsea are surrounded in the quarter-finals by clubs for whom Cup glory is a distant memory, if a memory at all.  Neither Middlesbrough nor Bristol Rovers have won it.  The last time for Barnsley was 1912, Cardiff 1927, Portsmouth 1939 and West Brom 1968.

"It is still called the most famous Cup competition in the world, a tournament where magic is sprinkled down the league.  Tosh.  It has not been so for some time and that is why the competition is dying.  The FA Cup, like the Premier League, has become a competition passed between the big boys.   (bg can la kt tim sayo)

Good Old Days

"The last real fairytale story was 20 years ago, when Wimbledon beat Liverpool in the 1988 final," noted Greaves, who scored 44 times in just 57 games for England.  "The 19 finals since have seen just six different winners.  In that time, only Everton and Tottenham, with a win apiece, have broken the Big Four抯 stranglehold on the event.  Yet in the 19 finals before the Crazy Gang upset the odds, there were 14 different winners.

Cup Means More To Smaller Clubs

"Clubs do not even have an open-top bus ride when they win it now," continued Greaves of the big four.  "Yet imagine the scenes in Barnsley or Cardiff, even Middlesbrough or Portsmouth, if they took the Cup home.  For the Cup抯 sake and future, I really hope one of them does."

After that emphatic performance against Olympiacos, whereby Lampard and Ballack orchestrated the victory, it was slightly disappointing to see that an injury to Lampard saw the partnership broken up yesterday.

The duo on Wednesday night showed that they can dove-tail well together and, as a leading tabloid has proven today, the statistics show this as well.

Interestingly when Chelsea have paired the duo our results have been as follows,

Played 42 games, Wins -29, Draws - 10 and Losses - 3 a win percentage of 69.04%

When Chelsea have played without the duo, the results are as follows,

Played 67 games, Wins -42, Draws - 18 and Losses - 7 a win percentage of 62.69%

Drogba, Sheva Out, Benzema In?

British tabloid The Mirror claims that both Didier Drogba and Andrei Shevchenko are to leave Chelsea in the summer, with Lyon youngster Karim Benzema apparently being groomed as a replacement...

The Mirror recounted the long-standing story that Didier Drogba is reaching the end of his tether at the Bridge, with the Ivorian allegedly keen to follow Jose Mourinho in departing the London club.

AC Milan are said to be leading the race for the 29-year-old's signature, although the big two in Spain are also said to be interested: as such, there should be little problem in selling Drogba on in summer, should he in fact be eager to leave.

Andriy Shevchenko, meanwhile, has by and large been a disappointment since signing on from AC Milan in 2006 for a mammoth fee in the region of

Sidwell On His Chelsea Struggle

Chelsea midfielder Steve Sidwell admites he is struggling to cope with life on the bench at Chelsea.

Life has come a full circle for Steve Sidwell in inside 12 months, and not in the right sense.

At this time last year, he was Reading's best player, and was inspiring Steve Coppell's minnows to finishing with over 50 points in their first season in the top flight.

Then came a much publicised Bosman move to join an already bulging Chelsea midfield, and it has not quite gone according to plan, particularly after the man who brought him to stamford Bridge, Jose Mourinho, left early in the season.

The former Reading star is now struggling to deal with it.

"It's tough," he told the club's official website. "Obviously everyone wants to play in all the games, big games, whether it be league, FA Cup or Champions League."

However, he is determined to fight on: "Everyone is fighting for places, but it brings out the character in people and the best in players."

He is currently sixth in the pecking order for a three man midfield, behind Frank Lampard, Michael Ballack, Michael Essien, John Obi Mikel and Claude Makelele.
