Satu malapetaka - Devan
PEMAIN Kelantan, Norshahrul Idlan Talaha (tengah) diraikan rakan sepasukan, Mohd. Badri Mohd.
Ditanya adakah mental para pemain Selangor begitu lemah sehingga mudah dipermainkan pemain-pemain Kelantan, Devan hanya berkata: "Apabila sudah dibolosi banyak gol, pemain jadi putus asa."
Devan bagaimanapun tetap mahu anak-anak buahnya memberikan yang terbaik malam esok biarpun sedar hanya kemenangan sekurang-kurangnya 5-0 mampu membawa Selangor layak ke final Piala FA pada 11 Jun depan.
"Memang satu tugas sukar.
-Kosmo |

Tatkala pengendali Selangor, K Devan perlu memikirkan ramuan khas untuk pasukannya mencari seberapa banyak gol pada pertemuan separuh akhir kedua Piala FA malam ini, Ketua Jurulatih Kelantan, Datuk M Karathu sedikit pun tidak tertekan, malah bersemangat menceritakan persiapan pasukan kendaliannya.
Bila diwawancara oleh TV malam tu, K Devan dah hilang suara sebab asyik menjerit marahkan anak didiknya. Kesian...kesian. |

Red Giants berdepan situasi mencemaskan apabila ketinggalan 1-0 menerusi Muhd.

Tony says sorry on TV
The fans had waited almost 15 years for an apology from the former Premier League star, and this week, ex-West Ham and Selangor striker Tony Cottee finally laid to rest the controversy that had been brewing since he became the Malaysian League’s biggest ever signing in 1996.
In his recent interview on Astro SuperSport’s Bola@mamak, Cottee addressed many of the controversial remarks that followed him during his football career in Malaysia.
" The last thing I am is a prima-donna but I was just used to a higher standard. When you go to another country and when you question the other guys, that is perhaps why I was pictured the wrong way. Did I enjoy the football? No. Did I enjoy being in Malaysia ? Yes, ” he remembers. “ Different culture…. I had a great time. My twin boys were conceived here. So I will always have great affection for Malaysia ”, said Cottee.
Cottee stunned the sporting world when he went from the Premier League to Selangor in October 1996. Aged 31 at the time, he had scored 182 top-flight league goals over 14 seasons with the Hammers and Everton.
When he returned from Asia in the summer of 1997, Cottee was signed by Martin O’Neill at Leicester City, linking up with Emile Heskey. He got his first taste of the European stage in the UEFA Cup and finally won a major English trophy when Leicester lifted the 2000 League Cup. Eighty-five league games for the Foxes yielded 27 goals, including the winner against Manchester United at Old Trafford in 1998.

Selangor Hammer
Posted on 3 March 2011 - 07:59pm
" TOO MANY MUSHROOMS and not enough magic " is how one wit described Tony Cottee’s 10 months in Malaysia in the mid-1990s.
If a touch unkind, it refers to the manner of his leaving as well as a less-than-stellar spell with Selangor, memories of which were stirred when he popped up on our screens as a World Cup pundit last year.
Cottee scored 14 goals in 23 games in Malaysia – not a bad return but perhaps not quite what was expected of a striker who bagged over 300 in a 20-year career in English football.
One of his strikes helped win the Malaysia Cup but even that can’t compete with his mushrooms jibe.
" The grass on some pitches, " he told a British newspaper, " was so long I saw mushrooms growing. " It was not the only bridge he burned.
There were other quips about having to clean his own boots and rooming with a teammate whose early morning wake-up calls disturbed his slumber.
Some players might have taken the " out of context " option when tackled on it but not Cottee.
" I really saw them, " he subsequently said of the fungi fields he was expected to play on. " It was no joke. "
If this didn’t go down too well with the groundsmen of the time, Cottee at least told it as he saw it and in doing so showed the makings of a no-nonsense pundit.
There is no ducking and diving or shooting the messenger for him – he stands by his comments a decade and a half later.
In an e-mail interview he told me : " I have happy memories of my time living in Malaysia but I didn’t enjoy the football. I did play in the Malaysia Cup final and my scoring record was good. I was just frustrated with the lack of professionalism I came across in my time out there.
" To be fair, English football had been going for 120 years and in Malaysia just 15, so I should have known what was coming but that didn’t mean I didn’t struggle to come to terms with it. It has given me some good material for my after dinner speech though… "
Asked how he got into punditry, he is typically forthright. " It was after my last season playing and a failed attempt at management (with then fourth division Barnet).
" I made a call to a friend at Sky and they gave me a chance on the Soccer Saturday show. I’ve always enjoyed working with the media, so it was a natural thing to do after that last season ! "
That last season (2000-01) saw him play in all four divisions, a precipitous descent by any standards but the rapidity is partly explained by his dabble in management.
He was also given a player-coaching role at Norwich after being released by Leicester City on a freebie in gratitude for three sensational years.
When he quit Malaysia, he was a forgotten man. He’d gone off the radar and admits: " I wasn’t wanted when I left so I thought I would return to one of my local clubs, Southend or Orient maybe, to play out my career. So, to join Leicester and work with Martin O’Neill was fantastic. I had three wonderful years there and winning the League Cup was the highlight of my career (the only trophy I won). "
His gratitude to O’Neill is not surprising. He is such a fan of the Ulsterman that he wishes he’d got the England job instead of Steve McClaren and the West Ham job when he was strongly linked with it in January.
" He’s that good, " insists Cottee. But while the Brian Clough disciple deserves immense credit for helping reverse a career heading nowhere fast, Cottee is far too modest to mention his own contribution.
Thirty-four goals in 100 games for the Foxes was proof he’d not lost his cunning in the penalty area. If that isn’t a bad return for a mid-30s striker, it was a reminder of his prolific heyday when Everton broke the British transfer record for him in 1988.
The fee of £2 million (RM10m) was paid back with interest – 99 goals in 244 games – including two against Liverpool in that epic 4-4 draw after which Kenny Dalglish first called it a day.
But it was at his beloved West Ham where Cottee made his name, scoring on his debut as a 17-year-old against Spurs and forging a lethal partnership with Frank McAvennie.
He had two spells with the Hammers, returning from Goodison before being sold to Selangor for £700,000 (RM3.5m).
He also won seven England caps. As evidence of his longevity, he played for more clubs after he left Malaysia than before he came.
He certainly liked the country and when he came out to do the World Cup on Astro, he brought his 70-year-old dad out with him to meet old friends and let him see for himself what Malaysia is like.
Now an occasional contributor from London where he’s a regular for Sky, he’s much valued for his knowledge and insightful analysis of the game.
It’s a role he enjoys along with after dinner speaking but the latter didn’t come naturally.
" It does now but I’ve been doing it for eight years. Trust me, at the start, I was rubbish. "
Telling it straight is Cottee’s modus operandi and he’s not afraid to own up to a gaffe.
" I pride myself on not making too many mistakes on TV but we all do it. Last season, I called a goal scored for Gillingham by a Leeds player… and it wasn’t an own goal!
" Also, about five years ago, I turned up at the Sky Studios in West London to be a pundit when I should have been at the City Ground in Nottingham to cover the match. I never made it to the game ! "
Fourteen years after leaving these shores, it’s fair to say Tony Cottee, raconteur, pundit and after-dinner speaker, has not let that grass grow under his feet.

Gergasi Merah tabik Seladang
Oleh NAN HIDAYAT NAN AZMIE
[email protected]
