Mind our hyphens and dashes
By LYNNE McGREADY
ARE you a stickler for correct punctuation? Do you niggle and nag people about punctuation?
Well, if you do, this one抯 for you and me as we wade through the never-ending learning process of life.
I recently read an absolutely enjoyable and very helpful book entitled Eats Shoots & Leaves |

some examples of clever, intelligence, smart, bright
1. How clever of you to do that
Teacher Dex is such a clever Dick!
2. Max is a bright student in his class
3. Max is a person of great intelligence
4. A smart student (likes Max) comes out with a smart answer |

lol @ clever dick -
i oughta deduct 100 of your credits - gs
dick is suitable for a guy like ya -
so the sentence is slightly wrong -
2. - the sentence is not totally correct because if you
wanna specifically talk about how bright you are in the class -
the sentence should be:
Maxx is the brightest student in his class -
so for 'bright' only : -
Maxx is a bright student.
hope it helps - |

1. so, what is the suitable word for a gal like u, Dex?
2. If Max is not the brighest student in his class
can we say
`Max is one of the brighest student in his class'
so, `Max is a bright student in his class' shows that Max is not the brighest student in his class, there are many other bright students in his class and he is one of them.... |

1. so, what is the suitable word for a gal like u, Dex?
well... you can say.. : dex, you're not bad, eh...
that would be good enough ..
2. If Max is not the brighest student in his class
can we say
`Max is one of the brighest student in his class'
brightest
brightest students
well.. only if maxx is one of them -
but if he is not the brightest student in his class
you just can say - maxx is a good student in his class
UNLESS maxx is one of the brightest students in his class
or he is one of the brightest
then - maxx is one of the brightest students in his class is correct -
however, if maxx not even bright or the brightest then you shouldn't
say that -
so, `Max is a bright student in his class' shows that Max is not the brighest student in his class, there are many other bright students in his class and he is one of them....
brightest
well bright and brightest are totally comparative
you can say :
maxx is a bright student
maxx is brighter than dex
maxx is the brightest in his class
if maxx is a bright student and many other bright students in his class then
you just can say:
maxx is a bright student just like many others in his class.
hope it helps -

Don't feel shy, Fosforus
we can ask a lot of questions here
and our distinguished teacher will explain everything
and will bring us to the restaurant of our choice![](static/image/smiley/default/titter.gif) |

Teacher, you're not bad, Dex! (replacement for clever dick)
Here are another situations which clearly need your explanation:
Reach and Arrive:
We hoped to reach the islands before nightfalll so that Dearie Dex can cook dinner for us.
We hoped to arrive at the islands before nightfalll so that Dearie Dex can cook dinner for us.
Which one is correct and suitable to be used in that situation? |

thanks a lot and as one of the brightest students in your class, it is understood
err...I intentionally left the alphabet `t' in brightest (cover line )
and the alphabet `s' in students...(cover line also )
of course.... you did those intentionally -
nothing whatsoever to do with typo and stuff...

Reach and Arrive:
We hoped to reach the islands before nightfalll so that Dearie Dex can cook dinner for us.
We hoped to arrive at the islands before nightfalll so that Dearie Dex can cook dinner for us.
Which one is correct and suitable to be used in that situation?
nightfall
island
**********************************************************************************
First, "reach" is transitive, and "arrive" is not. "Reach" can mean "arrive in/at":
reach
- to arrive at a place, especially after spending a long time or a lot of effort travelling:
examples:
We won't reach Miami till five or six o'clock.
They finally reached the coast after five weeks sailing.
News of his accident had only just reached us.
But it also has meanings of its own, which don't mean "arrive", but "be able to touch",
for example, or when you try to phone someone.
arrive
- must have a preposition between it and the object -
- the prepositions that are commonly used with "arrive" are AT and IN
-- based on these figures i would say that
We hoped to reach the island before nightfall so that Maxx can cook dinner for us
is more suitable -

Dear teacher..
"In this busy world
It's refreshing to find
Someone who still have time
To use their mind and intelligence
Someone who still have the faith to believe
That I can learn ....
