Thank you, *NSYNC, for not doing drugs. In an industry that is overridden with booze, heroin and cocaine, these pop stars stand for what is right.
Thank you for not exploiting your power over young girls. It would be so easy for them to do the wrong thing.
Why do I care if *NSYNC keeps a clean image?
Because I have a little sister who worships them. My sister has never smoked dope and has never hung around the wrong guys.
It makes me worry what kind of message she is getting when A.J. from the Backstreet Boys uncovers his addiction problems.
When R. Kelly is arrested for taking advantage of young teenage girls, I fear for my sister's safety.
But the members of *NSYNC, who have more power over their fans than the young girls' own parents do, choose to keep on the straight and narrow.
Pop stars have everything.
They have the fame and the fortune. But they also carry a great deal of responsibility. And too few respect that. The people who are role models for kids need to keep it clean.
I hope some of those Major League baseball players taking steroids get that message. I don't want to imagine that my future son would shoot up for his Little League game because his heroes do it.
Everyone who has ever been a teenager knows what an impressionable time it is. While I was serving my time as a teen, I listened to Nirvana, Phish and Pink Floyd. These bands were heavily influenced by drugs that I don't want my sister to be involved with.
So I understand the implications of listening to music. And it makes me ask one question.
Do hippies do drugs because they listen to the Grateful Dead, or do they listen to the Grateful Dead because they do drugs?
All I can gather is that the two are related. I've never heard of people selling acid and glass pipes outside of an *NSYNC concert. Because of this, my sister's seeing them three times a year doesn't worry me. What does worry me is that her appreciation for music is in need of a serious makeover.
When I hear "Bye, Bye, Bye" blasting out of my sister's bedroom, I have to cover my ears. But at least I don't have to worry about hers.
She may have bad taste in music, but these five pop icons never sing about sex and drugs.
She'll never get any ideas about how to dress like a slut, well, not from *NSYNC at least. She does like Britney Spears, unfortunately.
Thank you, *NSYNC, for giving my sister an influence that will guide her towards the right direction in life.
