Test Drive...The Star.....
When less means more
Tried & Tested
Story and photos by HONG BOON HOW
With prices soaring all around us, it’s nice to come across a hot product that bucks the up-trend. Of course, sacrifices have to be made.
FOR a non-national car model which sold some 100,000 examples since its introduction five years ago, the Toyota Vios is a tough act to follow.
While it somewhat replaced another top-seller — the Toyota Corolla which has gone up market with a bigger body and more luxurious appointments — the cheaper and smaller Vios edged in as the new entry-level Toyota.
At a glance, the Toyota Vios J looks pretty much like any other Vios variant. The dashboard looks similar but the audio system is a single-DIN type now. The wing mirror adjustment is manual. The wheels are steel, dressed up with hub caps.
With affordable pricing, reasonable specifications, comfortable ride, excellent fuel economy and a brand name known for stringent quality control, it should have come as no surprise that the Vios became an instant hit.
Take a glance at those driving a Vios and many will be middle income earners or young families wanting to move up from a Proton or Perodua to a Japanese marque.
Well, that transition has now been made a little easier with the introduction of a new entry level variant called the Vios J.
Positioned just below the Vios E, which was previously the cheapest Vios, it is priced at (on-the-road and with insurance) RM69,825 for the five-speed manual or RM73,825 for the four-speed automatic.
Of course, the E with the higher specs G and S variants will continue to be sold along side the J.
The dashboard looks similar but the audio system is a single-DIN type now.
Although some features have been removed to keep the Vios J’s price low, we are happy to report that the Vios J still remains a decent set of wheels that retains all the best attributes of its siblings.
For RM8,000 less than the Vios E, you still get a spacious interior and generous rear legroom with a flat floor design.
The Vios J doesn’t get fog lights and turn indicators on its wing mirrors, and wears 14-inch steel wheels instead of alloys.
Thankfully, UMW Toyota Motor has offered the Vios J with tastefully body colour co-ordinated door handles, wing mirrors and bumpers, unlike some manufacturers who roll out their base models with unpainted grey plastics.
The “J” badge on the trunk lid is the lone giveaway that it is a Vios J, otherwise, you might mistake it for any other Vios.
The dashboard might be a bit plasticky but we soon got over it quickly since the dark grey interior scheme did a fine job of lending a sporty appearance.
Well appreciated features such as power windows on all doors, driver’s window with one-touch automatic up or down convenience, dashboard cup holders and front doors pockets stay standard but the audio system is fronted by a single-DIN single CD player.
The wing mirror adjustment is manual.
However, other items that might be missed are the front passenger sun visor vanity mirror, wing mirrors with power adjustment, intermittent wiper mode and the driver’s airbag.
Features that will help keep you out of trouble such as anti-lock braking (ABS) system with electronic brake force distribution and brake assist are still there.
With no changes done to the suspension system, the Vios J loses nothing in ride comfort and handling.
Overall, the jewel of the Vios is its 1.5l twin cam engine with VVT-i technology which owners swear by for its fuel economy.
The higher spec-ed Vios variants with four-speed automatic transmission are already known to be frugal on fuel consumption so our test unit, with a manual transmission, turned out to be a pleasant surprise.
We still had a quarter tank of fuel left after driving the car for three days, clocking close to 500km! Toyota’s data sheet states that the Vios’ fuel tank can hold 42l.
Anyway, the drive was a mix of city and highway driving including a fast and furious run up to Genting Highlands and a Friday evening bumper-to-bumper jam on the Federal Highway for almost an hour.
Luckily, the clutch pedal was light enough and did not tire out the left foot even though I must have stepped on it close to a hundred times during that crawl.
Gear shifting is precise with short throws and gear slotting is slick enough for spirited driving.
With a manual gearbox, you also get a faster car and driving becomes more fun.
Another surprise is that the engine will not start unless the clutch pedal is held down while you twist the ignition key, a safety feature that is rarely seen in locally available manual transmission cars.
This will prevent the car from leaping forward during engine starts especially when owners do not realise the vehicle is in gear.
Taking into account the revised specifications, we could easily count the Vios J as a good value proposition if you are not the fussy type.
Opt for the fuel sipping manual transmission and you get more smiles as you get more miles for your petrol ringgit.
