FA Cup Final 07/08: Portsmouth vs Cardiff City
PREVIEW: Portsmouth and Cardiff dreaming of FA Cup glory
The big names may not be there this year, but the romantics will be out in force at Wembley on Saturday as Portsmouth of the Premier League and Cardiff City of the Championship duel for the most famous Cup competition in Europe, the FA Cup. For the first time since 1991, none of Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool or Chelsea, will take the field for an FA Cup final.
For many, that renders Cup final day obsolete, but for fans of Portsmouth and Cardiff, and those who believe miracles really can happen, Saturday's showdown at Wembley will be enthralling viewing.
Portsmouth go into the final as odds-on favourites to lift the trophy for only the second time in their history, 1939.
Having finished eighth in the Premiership and with international stars like Croatian Nico Kranjcar, Frenchman Lassana Diarra and the England pair of Sol Campbell and David James in their line-up, they are worthy favourites.
Cardiff, on the other hand, have former Chelsea striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and former Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler in their ranks as they look to win the trophy for the second time, 81 years after their first victory.
Fowler, a Cup-winner with Liverpool in 2001, had seemed unlikely to play any part in the match after a hip injury, but after an intensive training programme, the former England man is on the verge of returning and could play a part on Saturday, probably from the substitutes' bench.
"I thought my days of playing in major finals were gone, without a shadow of a doubt," Fowler said. "When you leave the Premier League and come to a Championship side, an FA Cup winners' medal is far, far from your mind.
"For me, it would be great to play, but if I don't I still want Cardiff to win the cup. So if I don't think I'm ready and the manager asks me I will say 'no' because I want Cardiff to win it."
Hasselbaink said he expected Fowler to be honest in his assessment of his fitness.
"Robbie will know himself when he is ready to play and the decision in the end is with the manager," the Dutchman said. "But whatever happens, you know Robbie will always give everything he can to help his side.
"Everyone knows what he is like, so don't rule anything out. Robbie is a winner and that never changes, whether if it is an FA Cup final or any other game."
Cardiff manager Dave Jones said reaching the final was a great achievement.
"We have worked really hard to get through to the final and it's great for the fans and everyone associated with the club. I won't get 1927 rammed down my throat any more.
"We want to make our own history."
Portsmouth would have loved to have been able to field Jermain Defoe but the England striker is cup-tied, and manager Harry Redknapp said he had already made up his mind as to who would start the match.
"I knew my Wembley team a couple of weeks ago but there have been one or two question marks since then which I think I have solved again now, but I don't want to show my hand to Cardiff too early," Redknapp said.
"Everyone's fit," Redknapp said. "I have not got to pick a team. It's a difficult time as I may have to disappoint one of two lads who have played in the other rounds."
As the Premier League side, the pressure is all on Portsmouth, but for their overseas players, the chance to win a trophy at Wembley is clearly an inspiration after a long season.
Kranjcar, who helped end England's hopes of qualifying for Euro 2008, said he was hoping for another big day.
"I have great memories of Wembley Stadium but, hopefully, Saturday will be the best one," he said. "Portsmouth have done unbelievably well in the last three years and hopefully the next step will be winning the FA Cup.
"It would be a massive result, not only for us as individuals but for the club because to get into Europe is very important.
"We must make sure we get there, not Cardiff."
The winners of the FA Cup are awarded a place in next season's UEFA Cup and should Cardiff win, they will be in the competition, even though Welsh teams usually go into the Welsh Cup instead. |
