Producer on Long Gestation of N.Korean Refugee Film

A film depicting the misery faced by North Korean defectors struck a chord with the audience gathered for a screening at the Library of Congress in Washington D.C. last month. Scheduled for release on June 5 here in Korea, the movie starring actor Cha In-pyo is produced by Patrick Cheh, the Korean-American president of Unity Media, who gave a presentation about the film抯 genesis at the event.

In an interview with the Chosun Ilbo, Cheh said he wanted to show the reality of North Korean refugees. Perseverance, he says, allowed the work to be completed although there is little hope of box-office success. 揟he movie criticizes the North Korean reality, that its regime violates the clear proposition that the family should live together, and breaks it down when it even fails to meet the basic need for clothes, food and shelter for its people,

45th Daejong Film Fest Invites Moviegoers

The Daejong (Grand Bell) Film Festival ― Korea's equivalent of the Academy Awards ― holds its 45th edition with small film festivals May 24-28 in Seoul and Tokyo before the big award ceremony here June 27. Organizers announced the lineup of movies including 56 works that will enter the competition round in a press conference Tuesday.

This year a total of 56 works were submitted of which 30 will be selected for preliminary judgment beginning today through May 28. The final judgment will take place starting June 12 at Seoul Theater, Jongno-3ga, inviting ordinary citizens as jury members.

The jury will include nine film specialists and 50 civilians who will choose prizewinners for Best Film, Best Actors, Best Supporting Actors and Best New Actors. Anyone can apply for a spot in the jury through the Web site www.daejongsang.com. The award ceremony will take place June 27 at COEX, southern Seoul.

Unrelated to the awards, the Daejong Film Festival will take place May 24-28 at Sangam World Cup Stadium. Co-hosted by the Motion Pictures Association of Korea and Seoul City, the five-day film event will feature free screenings of competing films (both feature and short films); meetings with directors and actors; concerts; exhibition of movie posters and still photos; fireworks and other spectacles.

Moviegoers might be able to re-watch popular 2007 movies like "D-War," "The Happy Life" and "Le Grand Chef" as well as critically acclaimed pieces like "Secret Sunshine" and "Epitaph" ― all candidates for the 30 contenders.

"Last year we showed two films everyday over a month, but it decreased the participation of cineastes. This year we organized a five-day festival where filmmakers and actors can meet with fans. Next year we hope to increase the timeframe to two weeks," said festival director Shin Woo-chul.

Movie fans in Japan will also be able to watch Korean films. This year, the Japan-based Korean Movie International Fan Association (KIFA) will also hold Daejong Film Festival Tokyo May 26-30 at Bunkyo Civic Center. The members of KIFA will choose five works from the 56 candidate films for the main competition here, and screen them during the five-day festival.

This year, veteran actor An Sung-ki and screen beauty Kim A-jung will represent the festival as honorary ambassadors.

"The festival started out as a small meeting of cineastes who got together for their pure love of cinema. It grew to see its 45th edition already," said An, a winner of multiple Daejong Awards including last year's for Best Actor and 50 Years of Acting the year before.

"I feel very close with the festival particularly after winning last year's award for Best Actress," said Kim, the star of the international hit movie "200 Pounds Beauty.'

After her stellar big screen debut, Kim took a yearlong break. "The rest allowed me to reflect upon things and to spend time with my family and friends. I'd like to visit the audience soon through my next piece, which is most likely going to be a movie," she said.

Rain Appears on Colbert Show

By Han Sang-hee
Staff Reporter

Pop singer and actor Rain

Top Korean singer Rain met his match during his visit to Los Angeles for the promotion of his movie, "Speed Racer." The 25-year-old singer appeared on top comedian Stephen Colbert's show "The Colbert Report."

Many Korean fans are familiar with the 43-year-old host who once imitated Rain on one of his shows.

In 2007, Rain topped the "Time 100 Poll," the Time magazine's online poll of the 100 most influential people of the year, with Stephen Colbert tailing him as runner up. Colbert mentioned his defeat by the Korean pop sensation and imitated a scene from Rain's music videos as well as singing a Korean song.

This year saw yet another defeat for Colbert, who was placed number three with Rain taking second place. Colbert once again mentioned the results during his show, saying that "Rain keeps on knocking me down."

Rain actually had a moment to defend himself during an interview with Time.com.

"I have to say you almost look as good as I am. But as far for the singing, let's just say, please don't quit your day job," Rain laughed.

Colbert replied in jest that his day job was the president of the "I Hate Rain Fan Club."

He then said that he found it hard to believe Rain knew who he was and challenged the singer to come on his show for a dance match

Taking up the challenge, Rain finally decided to make an appearance on Colbert's show, where the two stars showed their dance moves back and forth. The episode showing the two ambitious stars dance match was aired on May 5 around the U.S.

According to Rain's agency, J.Tune Entertainment, Colbert became one of Rain's biggest fans after their event and also appeared at the Tribeca Film Festival to watch "Speed Racer."

'Unforgettable': Return to Innocence

By Lee Hyo-won
Staff Reporter

In the movie "Unforgettable," school children from a remote island are fascinated by their first visit to Seoul. / Courtesy of Line Pictures

In tune with Family Month comes a heartwarming tale about cherished childhood memories, "Unforgettable.'' Set in an obscure village during the 1970s, the film captures the beauty of simplicity and signals a return to an age of innocence. The old becomes new ― the retro story will be like a breath of fresh air to computer game-addicted urbanites.

It's a small jewel of a film, where director Song Dong-yoon uses analog film rather than digital to immortalize the breathtaking natural scenery of Sindo. Mellow piano tunes compliment the visuals, though some of the overly dramatic soundtracks for touching moments are a bit cliche. Nevertheless, it shows how computer-generated imagery, no matter how glitzy or high-tech, cannot rival the sight of glistening, rolling hills on a sunny day or a golden sunset by the beach.

Korea's favorite child actor Yoo Seung-ho was much loved as the bratty city boy who learns to appreciate country life and his grandmother's old ways in "The Way Home'' (2002). As Gil-su in "Unforgettable,'' Yoo trades in his Nintendo for a pair of traditional rubber shoes, which enables this happy little islander to indulge in outdoor play.

Gil-su is one of the dozen children that make up the student body of Sindo School on Sindo Island. In a single classroom, first to fifth graders sit down to be enlightened by their pretty and warmhearted teacher Eun-young. One day, Eun-young receives an invitation to visit a cookie factory in Seoul ― the fruits of her vigorous letter-writing efforts to the company.

For the handful of farming families that inhabit this remote island, the biggest excitement yet is visiting the fish market of a nearby town via a boat ride. The thought of Seoul ― the "pinnacle'' of modernity and civilization ― and let alone visiting it, are out of the question, and the conservative parents firmly oppose the field trip.

But Gil-su and his friends are already swept away by the thought of seeing an actual bicycle, and set out to earn money themselves for the trip and start collecting clams with their teacher to sell at the market. For Gil-su, visiting Seoul means more than just free cookies. He's a mature little boy who must take care of his baby sister and tolerate his alcoholic single father. He's determined to find his mother who supposedly runs a store in the city.

While the stoy of "Unforgettable'' may sound similar to "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,'' this is a tale about love, particularly the affection between a teacher and student. Teachers were traditionally revered for teaching more than the curriculum, but life itself.

Unlike other teachers that leave Sindo after a year or so, Eun-young had won the faith of the villagers, who eventually agree to send their children to Seoul. After much trouble, the group finally arrives in Seoul. However, Eun-young must prepare for the worst when Gil-do and his friends, fascinated by a bicycle, go missing.

The story unfolds as grown-up Gil-su (Lee Chang-hoon) recalls his treasured memories. He himself has become a school teacher in Seoul and makes a solo trip back home to Sindo ― the parents of his own students opposed a school trip there because the children are too busy with hagwon or private academies.

The juxtaposition of the modern classroom ― where the teacher must reprimand students for using cell phones and students complain about summer assignments like making "the best memory of their lives'' ― with the pure love and joy of Sindo School enables us to question our skewed educational zeal.

"Unforgettable'' is perfect for the upcoming Teacher's Day (May 15) as it will particularly strike a pang of nostalgia in adults and enlighten children.

"Iron Man," "Kingdom" rule weekend B.O.

Written by Dave McNary

"Iron Man" forged B.O. gold in its overseas debut, ruling foreign multiplexes with a $96.8 million take from 7,500 playdates in 57 international markets. Marvel's tentpole, handled by Paramount in most territories, came in well above expectations to dominate everywhere. It collected $10.3 million in the U.K., $9.6 million in Mexico, $7.5 million in South Korea, $7.1 million in France, $6.2 million in Spain and $6 million in Brazil.

The massive opening nearly tripled the previous top foreign launch for the year, "10,000 BC," and marked the biggest international frame since "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" conjured up $193 million last July.

In South Korea, where local pics often dominate, the $7.5 million "Iron Man" launch represented the biggest opening of 2008 and more than double the "Spider-Man" debut.

The offshore numbers for "Iron Man" are particularly impressive since the character hadn't been established internationally prior to the pic's marketing blitz. Rivals believe the film could tally $300 million outside the United States, given that openings generally matched launches of "Spider-Man" (which finished with $418 million overseas) and "Transformers" ($382 million) and easily topped the debuts of "X-Men" ($138 million) and "Fantastic Four" ($175 million).

As for the rest of the weekend's openers, Jackie Chan-Jet Li actioner "Forbidden Kingdom" appeared to be the likely leader with a rough estimate of $8 million from soph seshes in Asian markets after easily winning the previous frame with $18.6 million.

Fox's family fave "Horton Hears a Who!" also grabbed $3.8 million at 1,776, including $1.1 million in its Korean launch. The toon's been the best foreign performer among U.S. titles over the past month with a $131.7 million international cume.
