Cameroon seek quick redemption
ELMINA, Jan 25 (Reuters) - Cameroon need to put their 4-2 thrashing by Egypt behind them when they face Zambia in a make-or-break Group C game in the African Nations Cup in Kumasi on Saturday.
Defeat by the holders in the opening game has left the Indomitable Lions with work to do to make the quarter-finals.
'We now have to win our last two games if we are to reach the quarter-finals. We don't have the choice anymore,' said coach Otto Pfister.
Striker Samuel Eto'o, who scored twice against Egypt to move within one goal Ivory Coast's Laurent Pokou's Nations Cup record of 14, has no doubts that Cameroon will bounce back and progress.
'We will surely beat Zambia and Sudan to qualify for the quarter-finals,' he said. Zambia brushed aside Sudan 3-0 on Tuesday.
Pfister is likely to hand midfielder Achille Emana a place in the starting line-up at the expense of Jean Makoun following a good second-half performance against Egypt.
If Zambia were to stun Cameroon, victory over minnows Sudan would give Egypt a last-eight spot.
Egypt showed against Cameroon they were unlikely to surrender their trophy easily. With playmaker Hosni Abd Rabou and striker Mohamed Zidan, the Pharaohs have firepower up front and their one-touch football was highly impressive.
'We are not there just to be part of the tournament,' said Hamburg SV striker Zidan.
'We are here to go all the way and retain our title.' |

KOLO TOURE could be out of the African Nations Cup sparking fears at Arsenal he may miss crucial games on his return.
The centre-half, 26, was carried off on a stretcher before half-time in Ivory Coast抯 4-1 win over Benin.
He had just set up brother Yaya for his side抯 second goal but hobbled away from the stadium with an ice pack over his thigh. Didier Drogba抯 40th-minute opener set the Ivory Coast on their way.
But the Chelsea strike star faces grief from his missus after helping set up a Group B decider with Mali on Tuesday.
Drogba revealed: 揑t抯 going to be difficult... I抦 from Ivory Coast, my wife Alla is from Mali. But I will give my best.
揑t抯 good to win the first two games. Now we have to concentrate on Mali and give our best to finish best. |
