Man City duo hit by swine flu
LONDON — Staff and players at Manchester City have undergone tests for the H1N1 virus, or swine flu, after two players were discovered with the illness, it was reported Wednesday.
Slovakian winger Vladimir Weiss was ordered to stay at home instead of reporting for Saturday's match against Chelsea, won 2-1 by City, after he was diagnosed with the virus.
City on Wednesday confirmed that striker Craig Bellamy has also been suffering from the illness.
Those cases, and the fact that some staff have complained of flu-like symptoms, has prompted testing of staff members and players at the club.
"There is a little bit of it creeping into the camp," City assistant boss Mark Bowen told the Manchester Evening News.
"Players come in every day with sniffles, coughs and colds and the doctor has to determine whether it is the onset of something more serious.
"It is his decision whether they have to be sent home."
Although Bellamy is believed to be over the worst, he remains doubtful for Saturday's match away to Bolton as he battles to recover from a knee injury.
City have previously been affected by swine flu. Micah Richards contracted the virus while on holiday in July.
Blackburn Rovers were also hit by a spate of illnesses in October. |
