Benitez prepared to gamble on Gerrard

Rafael Benitez will invoke the spirit of Istanbul as he prepares to gamble on the fitness of skipper Steven Gerrard.

Chelsea, winners 3-1 at Anfield last week in the first leg, are odds-on now to complete the task and qualify for the expected semi-final showdown against Barcelona who are already 4-0 ahead in their tie with Bayern Munich.

Liverpool have never won away from home in Europe against an English team, they have scored only twice in four previous Champions League games at Chelsea and they have not scored three goals there in 20 years.

And Liverpool will have to create history by becoming the first visiting side to ever score three times at Stamford Bridge in a European match.

That is the measure of the task facing Liverpool, with everything stacked against them as they face their 300th match in European competition, and their 169th in the European Cup.

If they want to make that 170 before next season, then Gerrard's involvement is vital.

He missed Saturday's 4-0 mauling of Blackburn with a groin strain, and will have treatment right up to the kick-off tomorrow evening in the hope he can inspire the team as he did when Liverpool fought back from 3-0 down to win the 2005 Champions League final.

The manager said: "Steven is getting better, he will train with the squad and we will make a decision nearer the match. obviously we want him in the side, winning is easier with him than without him.

"Everything can change if he can play, and plays well, and it is not a massive risk if we use him.

"If we lose a player for 10 to 14 days it will be bad, but that would only maybe effect one game for us. It is a calculated risk.

"The experience of Istanbul will help us, it shows you can come back from a big score. And it is important to realise that Bolton scored three there on Saturday, anything can happen.

"Steven is important, a key player for us. He has power and he can score goals."

He added: "We have already won at Stamford Bridge this season. We ended their long unbeaten home record and that is a massive boost to our confidence.

"We can do it, if we work together and we score in the first half. If we do not do that it becomes increasingly more difficult, mentally.

"If we score a second goal then they will be under real pressure. But we know we must be almost perfect.

"And we know that with Steven and Fernando (Torres) together on the pitch we do have a good chance.

"eople have written us off. Maybe we have nothing to lose, which means we can be positive, relax and hopefully then not make mistakes.

"We want to score an early goal, that is very important. But we will need to be calm and not lose our concentration. Bolton scored three, so it can be done, but Chelsea had already scored four, so you can see how hard it is to beat them at Stamford Bridge.

"Chelsea are a very good team and it will be very difficult, but we have been scoring a lot of goals against Manchester United, Real Madrid, Aston Villa and now Blackburn, so our form is very good."

Benitez acknowledges that the role of Michael Essien in the first match, man-marking Gerrard, was key to the outcome.

He said: "They did not do things in the game that they had done before. Essien was a big difference, not just because he marked Steven well but because he is an excellent player.

"He is strong, and he is like a new signing for them. He had been out for a long time so when that happens a player usually returns with plenty of energy and desire.

"If we can give our fans something from the start, that could be very important because they will really get behind us."

And Benitez, who will also have Javier Mascherano back from suspension, believes that the hammering of Blackburn will serve as another confidence boost.

He said: "The team produced a superb display, scored plenty of goals and certainly showed that we can score three goals in a match.

"And Blackburn have a lot of very tall players, and we handled that well, and that gives us another positive message ahead of the second leg.

Five great European comebacks

Liverpool face an uphill task against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge if they are to keep their Champions League hopes alive.

However, the competition has seen its fair share of spectacular comebacks in recent years - and here espnstar.com looks at five matches which have turned around.

Deportivo La Coruna 4 AC Milan 0 (Deportivo won 5-4 on aggregate, champions League quarter-final, April 2004)

Deportivo left the San Siro after the first leg on the end of a 4-1 defeat facing the task of overhauling a three-goal deficit against an Italian defence including Paolo Maldini and Alessandro Nesta. Walter Pandiani's early goal was added to by Juan Carlos Valeron's header half an hour later as the Spanish side started to believe. Just two minutes before half-time Albert Luque held off Nesta before smashing the ball into the roof of the net to put the home side ahead on aggregate. Veteran substitute Fran stunned the Rossoneri when he sealed the amazing comeback with a fourth goal 15 minutes from time.

Man United 2 Bayern Munich 1 (European Cup final, Barcelona, May 1999)

United trailed for nearly the entire game after falling behind to Mario Basler's sixth-minute free-kick. But, in the most amazing finish in the history of European Cup finals, United turned the game on its head. Substitute Teddy Sheringham equalised with a shot on the turn from eight yards and extra-time beckoned. But United had other ideas and, when David Beckham's corner was flicked on by Sheringham, fellow substitute Ole Gunnar Solskjaer rifled the ball into the roof of the net to spark joyous scenes among United's near-40,000 fans in the Nou Camp. United had become the first club to win the treble of European Cup, Premier League title and FA Cup.

Liverpool 3 AC Milan 3 (Liverpool won 3-2 on penalties, Champions League final, Istanbul, May 2005)

Liverpool beat Milan in a penalty shoot-out to win the Champions League after sensationally coming from three goals down at half-time. Paolo Maldini gave Milan a first-minute lead, and two goals from Hernan Crespo put them in a seemingly unassailable position at the interval. Reds captain Steven Gerrard gave Liverpool hope, and Vladimir Smicer and Xabi Alonso levelled in a seven-minute spell. Jerzy Dudek then saved from Andrea Pirlo and Andriy Shevchenko in the shoot-out to clinch a stunning victory.

Juventus 2 Man United 3 (Utd won 4-3 on aggregate, Champions League semi-final, 1999)

After a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford, going 2-0 down in the opening 10 minutes of the second leg at the Stadio Delle Alpi was not what the Red Devils had planned. Captain Roy Keane hauled his side back into the game, heading home from a corner before getting a booking which was to rule him out of the final. Keane pushed his team forward and Dwight Yorke levelled the scores with a diving header from Andy Cole's cross. Cole then netted United's third as they reached their first European Cup final in 31 years.

Basle 3 Liverpool 3 (Champions League group match, November 2002)

Liverpool trailed 3-0 in Switzerland as Julio Rossi, Christian Gimenez and Timothee Atouba all found the net in the opening half an hour. Danny Murphy's shot from the edge of the area restored some pride before Milan Baros set up Smicer for a sliding close-range finish three minutes later. Michael Owen got Liverpool level with seven minutes remaining, when he scored the rebound from his penalty. However, despite the comeback Liverpool still crashed out of the competition in the group stage.

Liverpool defender set to make City move
03:18 PM 13 April, 2009
Jack Hobbs seems certain to join Leicester City Football Club in the summer.

The young defender has been at Liverpool since 2005, when the Reds moved to take him from Lincoln City in the hope of nurturing him into one of the best in his position in the country.

And although Rafael Benitez still believes the 20-year-old will eventually be a top player, he has only made two appearances for the Anfield club and is currently starring on loan at the Walkers Stadium.

The Foxes are on the brink of earning an instant return to the Championship after taking League One by storm, and their first task in the summer will be to sign Hobbs on a permanent basis.

kalu budak ni spanish rasanya dah regular 1st team dah
