Madrid And Bayern Watch As Ballack Faces Another Axe

Reports on Wednesday suggest that Michael Ballack is set to be dropped yet again as Chelsea face Olympiacos tonight. Real Madrid are monitoring the German's situation very closely.

The Germany captain was omitted from the Chelsea line-up in the Carling Cup final, but returned with a bang at the weekend, scoring in the 4-0 mauling of West Ham.

Out of formation

But the Daily Mail claim that Avram Grant will again bench the former Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen man for tonight's Champions League game against Olympiacos as he seeks a new formation.

The Israeli coach experimented with a 4-3-1-2 formation yesterday in training with Joe Cole supporting front duo Nicolas Anelka and drogba.  The Mail further claims that Makelele, Essien and Lampard were the midfield trio involved in the test.

Unhappy At Chelsea?

Ballack was used in another experiment but is understood to feel like the 'odd man out' in the current set-up, something that has put Spanish giants Real Madrid on standby.

Los Merengues' boss and compatriot Bernd Schuster has not given up hope of signing his compatriot this summer, although some reports suggest that Bayern Munich and new boss Jurgen Klinsmann may not be averse to bringing Ballack back to the Allianz Arena.
