Arsenal will have to break through the £10m barrier to force Albion to the transfer table for central defender Curtis Davies.
That's what the Gunners will be told in the wake of a new wave of reports claiming they are ready to offer £8m for the England under-21 international.
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is said to be set on recruiting Davies to replace Sol Campbell in the firm belief he is replacing an England defender of the past with an England defender of the future.
So far, the Baggies have stuck to their pledge to keep their squad together and repelled attempts to pick off their star players - including a "derisory" £3.5m bid for Davies from Spurs.
"We have not received any bids from Arsenal for any of our players," said an Albion spokesman today.
But boss Bryan Robson also knows there comes a point when reality bites - and Arsenal will be told that will arrive only if they offer £10m. "If a big club comes in with massive money, then you don't know what might happen," said Robbo.
The surprise departure of Campbell, who was contracted to Arsenal until 2009, has prompted Wenger to consider a replacement. Last season, Wenger admitted that he liked Davies but, at that time, was not in need of a defender.
The transfer scramble will quicken now that the World Cup is over and Premiership clubs return for training and Albion are steeling themselves for more offers.
Keeper Tomasz Kuszczak is wanted by Manchester United - with some reports today claiming Albion have agreed a £4m sale.
And among the latest contenders on Robson's hit list are Preston keeper Carlo Nash, valued at around £1m, and Switzerland's No 1 Pascal Zuberbuhler, now 35 but available on a free transfer from his nation's top club FC Basel. |
