Team of the Week
| | | | David James | | | |
Emile Heskey | | | | | | | Brynjar Gunnarsson | | | Paul Scharner | | | | | David Bentley | Gary Speed | | Aaron Lennon |
Mark Viduka | Yossi Benayoun | | | | | | | | Luke Moore | | | Carlos Tevez | Paul Jewell |
David James - cunning as a fox, wily as an owl, agility like acat and occasionally as cumbersome as an elephant. Fittingly, forsomeone whom I have so blithely associated with the animal world it wasfrom The Beast himself that James saved a penalty to complete amiserable day for Julio Baptista.
Emile Heskey. Yeah, that's right. Emile Heskey. In defence.World's gone bloody mad if you ask me. He started the game in his morefamiliar position up front but injuries to Arjan Dee Zeeuw and RyanTaylor meant Heskey was forced to position his bulky frame at the backwhere he was probably Wigan's most effective player. This shuffling of roles was clearly something
Brynjar Gunnarrssonwas keen to get involved in as the centre-back struck a late goal forReading at Blackburn Rovers to earn his side a share of the points in asix-goal beauty of a game. Not enough for Reading to get in to Europethough and it was announced this evening that Steve Sidwell will beleaving the club. Oh dear.
Paul Scharner was instrumental in Wigan's desperate fight forPremiership survival in their game against doomed Sheffield United. Thebig Austrian weighed in with the Latics first goal, a well taken volleyin the fourteenth minute, and helped repel the attacks of the Bladeswho were unable to take advantage of their extra man.
Aaron Lennon provided much of the ammunition for Spurs twotarget men Berbatov and Keane to do the damage. He almost scoredhimself in the first half with a shot which was saved by AndreasIsaakson, sold one excellent dummy to set up Berbatov and generallymade a nuisance of himself to the beleaguered Manchester City defence.
David Bentley had another good game for Blackburn Rovers. Hecame close to scoring twice in quick succession but was denied first byAdam Federici and then shot just wide. He got lucky third time roundthough, tapping in Blackburn's second goal from close range.
Gary Speed may not have many more games left in him but he isstill capable of showing the young 'un's a thing or two. He scored thefirst goal (his eighth this season) for Bolton in their draw with AstonVilla which guarantees the Trotters European football for only thesecond time in their history.
Yossi Benayoun was one of the players likely to have left UptonPark if they had been relegated this weekend. Hammers fans will hope heis with them for the long run after he gave another impressive showingat Old Trafford. He stopped a certain United goal, heading off the linefrom an Alan Smith effort before blocking the following shot with hisbody. One player who looks like he is going to be moving on over the summer is
Mark Viduka. If he does, at least he signed off in style, bagging himself a brace ofgoals as Middlesbrough brushed Fulham aside. The big Aussie was unluckynot to complete a hat-trick and Gareth Southgate will do well to useall of his famous charm and verve to keep hold of his man.
Carlos Tevez has risen to the not inconsiderable challenge ofkeeping West Ham in the Premiership majestically. Since breaking hisgoal duck for the Hammers he has been unable to stop scoring. His sixthof the season beat Manchester United and ensured West Ham will beremaining in the top flight next season.
Luke Moore scored a spectacular goal for Aston Villa at Boltonto earn his side a share of the points. The substitute volleyed pastJussi Jasskelainen in the 81st minute and the point earned pushed Villaup the table to an almost respectable eleventh. Martin O'Neill will behoping for a better placing next season.Manager of the week goes to
Paul Jewell. Shorn oftheir skipper and their right-back within the first half, his Wiganteam were then reduced to ten man at Bramall Lane when Lee McCullochsaw red. His team's battling performance kept the Latics up andcondemned the Blades to relegation.

10 worst signings in epl this season..
Make an inspired signing and there is a rush to claim the credit.Make an unsatisfactory buy and there is a doubt who was actuallyresponsible: was it the manager, chairman, director of football or PiniZahavi?
The 2006-7 season has been, in common with its predecessors, notablefor some recruits everyone regrets. There are enough that Soccernet'stop 10 does not include Aston Villa's underwhelming Stilian Petrov orNewcastle's underachieving Damien Duff.
There wasn't room for all of Manchester City's goal-shy forwards or anyof Watford's legion of nonentities. So, without further ado, the chosen10 are:
10. Robert Huth (Middlesbrough, |

Jewell quits as Wigan boss
GOODBYE ... Paul Jewell has told chairman Dave Whelan that he is leaving Wigan
PAUL JEWELL has stunned Wigan by quitting as boss.
The move comes just 24 hours after he saved the Latics from relegation on the final day of the Premiership season.
The ex-Bradford boss kept Wigan in the top-flight yesterday by beating Sheffield United at Bramall Lane, sending the Blades tumbling into the Championship.
Jewell has been tipped to replace under-fire Stuart Pearce at Manchester City.
But it appears he will not make an immediate return to management.
Jewell said: "I have made this decision with a heavy heart as I feel it is time for me to have a break from football.
"I have given everything I have as a person to bringing success here over the past six years.
"It is not an easy thing to walk away from somewhere and something which has been such a part of your life for so long.
"The intensity of football at the highest level, although completely addictive, is very draining.
"I feel I would be kidding the chairman, my players and the supporters if I was to carry on without being able to put in the energy and dedication I know is required to be successful at this level."
The Liverpool-born boss spent six seasons at the JJB Stadium and guided the club from League One to the Premiership.
Latics chairman Dave Whelan has called a press conference for 3pm, when he is expected to name Jewell's replacement. |

City dispense of Pearce's servicesStuart Pearce has been sacked by Manchester City after a season of struggle at Eastlands, the club have confirmed.
City have acted after a disappointing season in which they flirted with relegation before finishing four points above the drop zone.
A statement on the club's website confirmed Pearce's contract had been "terminated" with "immediate effect".
City chief executive Alistair Mackintosh said: "The board of directors would like to thank Stuart for his hard work and service during his six years here at Manchester City and wish him well for the future."
