Ferguson Angry Over PenaltySat 26 Apr, 06:09 PM
Sir Alex Ferguson rounded on referee Alan Wiley after his team's title charge was derailed at Stamford Bridge.
The Manchester United manager was furious that a penalty was awarded against Michael Carrick with four minutes remaining.
Michael Ballack kept his cool to score his second goal of the game from the spot and put Chelsea level on points.
Wayne Rooney seemed to have secured a point after he cancelled out the opener from the German midfielder.
But Ballack had the final word, leaving Ferguson questioning whether Chelsea should have ever been given the penalty.
"It was absolutely diabolical, " he told MUTV. "It is a major decision.
"Granted, it hit his hand. But he has not lifted his hand above his shoulders, above his head, anything like that.
"It is going straight to Rio Ferdinand. The referee should have seen that rather than the linesman.
"If we're not going to get those decisions then we are under pressure."
Ferguson believes his team have not been getting the rub of the green from officials.
He said: "If we're not getting the decisions we deserve then we're going to have to perform really well.
"In the context of today, when (Cristiano) Ronaldo comes on, in the first minute he's grappled to the floor by Ballack.
"It was a clear penalty kick but no penalty was given."
Ferguson was also upset by a challenge by Didier Drogba on Nemanja Vidic, which saw the defender come off after 14 minutes.
The Serbian needed stitches and lost a tooth.
"He got kneed in the face by Drogba - no foul given, " said the Old Trafford boss. "He was dazed rather than concussed."
Ferguson maintains United are still in the driving seat - given their superior goal difference - with two games remaining.
United face West Ham next Saturday before Chelsea travel to Newcastle two days later.
It could even come down to the last game.
United go to Wigan on May 11 while Chelsea face Bolton.
Ferguson said: "It's still in our hands. The players and the supportare really fired up for the next game. Hopefully we can get the resultwe want.
"In fairness, Chelsea were the better team in the first half.
"Sometimes, coming out of a European game, it takes a while to get it right. Unfortunately, it didn't happen for us."
Ferguson expects Wayne Rooney to be fit for the Champions Leaguesemi-final against Barcelona next Tuesday after he took a bang on thehip.
With the teams locked at 0-0 after the first leg at the Nou Camp inmidweek, Ferguson added: "We are one step away from Moscow. Hopefullywe can do it." |

Chelsea v Man Utd: How the players rated
Chelsea
Cech 7/10
Only sporadically involved, but kept concentration and showed great handling. Launched several counters.
Ferreira 5
Didn't do enough on the ball and Rooney too often got in behind him. (Sub 66: Anelka, 5/10 - no impact whatsoever).
Carvalho 6
As always a good defensive display from the Portuguese, but a horrendous error could have cost Chelsea the title
Terry 7
Held together a dangerously high offside line and won several balls from set plays.
A Cole 7
Great battle with Nani in the first half and made several crunching tackles. Not much of a force going forward.
Essien 8
Outshone Carrick with an energetic display and later created well from right-back.
Ballack 7
Showed good awareness of space for the opener and cool composure with the penalty.
Mikel 7
Controlled the pattern of the play throughout the first half with his simple passing and excellent vision.
J Cole 6
Lacked self-belief at times but dangerous when coming inside to link up with Drogba. (Sub 87: Makele - 6/10).
Drogba 7
Should have had a bigger impact given Vidic's injury, but still created the first goal and threatened throughout.
Kalou 6
Menacing runs but ineffective out wide. (Sub 81: Shevchenko 6/10 - vital goal-line clearance). |

Manchester United
Van der Sar 7/10
Handled well, made some good saves and remained composed when frequently under pressure.
Brown 6
Moved to centre-half after Vidic's injury and won his share of headers against Drogba but not as dominant as the Serb.
Ferdinand 7
Although not at his very best, he read situations well and used his pace to get his team-mates out of trouble.
Vidic 6
Coped well early on. (Sub: Hargreaves (7/10) - nullified the threat of Kalou to good effect).
Silvestre 5
Unsurprisingly, struggled to cope with the pace of the game after recent inactivity and too often backed off attackers.
Fletcher 6
Worked hard and made some good interceptions, but wasn't a creative or attacking force.
Carrick 5
Dominated by Essien, he was unable to influence the game creatively or defensively.
Anderson 5
Deployed as the most attacking midfielder, but failed to support Rooney. (Sub 65: O'Shea, 5/10 - little impact).
Nani 6
Good pace and trickery but, like Ronaldo in his early days, he too often failed to produce an end product.
Rooney 7
Used space intelligently and finished his goal brilliantly. (Sub 63: Ronaldo, 7/10 - had a shot cleared off the line late on).
Giggs 6
Chosen for his tactical acumen and composure, defended well but didn't create enough. |
