Detroit Electric to base electric cars on Proton cars?
We may see electric versions of the Proton Savvy, Proton GEN2 and even a possible Proton MPV very soon, as evident from this recent revelation. They wont be Proton-badged though - the world will know them as Detroit Electric cars. The Detroit Electric was an electric car produced by the Anderson Electric Car Company in Detroit between 1907 to 1939. It had a top speed of 32km/h and a maximum range of about 130km, though driving it in an efficient manner scored a record of 340.1km on a single charge.
The new Detroit Electric will be a joint venture between ZAP and China Youngman. Ex-Lotus Engineering top man Albert Lam (shown top left) will chair the new Detroit Electric venture. Its first cars will roll off the production line in summer 2009.
Now here where we find out some of Detroit Electrics cars will be based off Proton bodies. Detroit Electric cars will be brought into the European market by a Dutch consortium called Electric Cars Europe (ECE). Their website lists a couple of models like an electric version of the Lotus Elise and an electric Volkswagen Golf.
But the Detroit Electric range is also listed: a four model line-up that consists of a subcompact, a mid-sized sedan/hatchback, the Zap alias, and a full-sized SUV called the ZAP-X, which we all know is an electric-powered Lotus APX.
To the left you will find the information on the compact electric car that Detroit Electric will offer. It is quite obviously a Proton Savvy with no badge on the front.
According to the preliminary info, the Detroit Electric Proton Savvy will be launched in the 4th quarter of 2009. It will be powered by a 30kW (40hp) electric motor thats backed by lithium-ion batteries.
Range is about 300km, and I am not sure if my translation is right but it appears that the vehicle can be charged up in between 2.5 hours to 7 hours, depending on the power supply. Estimated price is 22,491 Euros, or about RM112,188.00!
The next car is described as a mid-sized sedan/hatchback. The silhouette looks like the Proton GEN2, except it seems to have a very radically styled front end. Two door handles on the side can be seen, showing that it has at least 4 doors, or 5 if its a hatch like the GEN2.
This larger Detroit Electric Proton GEN2 probably has a larger battery so it can go further with a maximum range of 550km, and on to a top speed of 190km/h thanks to its powerful 150kW (200 horsepower) electric motor. Charging time is listed as being between 3.5 hours to 10 hours, again depending on the source of power.
The Detroit Electric mid-sized sedan possibly and likely to be based on the GEN2 is expected to be launched in the second quarter of 2010 and will retail for 29,251 Euros, or RM145,599.00!
The final model (other than the ZAP Alias which I will not be talking about here) is the Detroit Electric ZAP-X based on ZAP ZAP-X concept which is in turn based on the Lotus APX, a 5-seater MPV developed by Lotus. Protons MPV could possibly be some variation of this concept by Lotus.
The Detroit Electric ZAP-X will be a monster, featuring 400kW (536 horsepower) of power and travelling up to 225km/h. Sounds like a BMW X6 competitor to me. It takes less than 4 seconds to get up to 100km/h.
Range is expected to be about 525km which indicates rather large lithium ion batteries but no figures were given on how long it would take to charge them up.
An expected launching date for the ZAP-X is the 4th quarter of 2010, and the Detroit Electric MPV/SUV vehicle will cost 71,400 Euros, or an astronomical RM355,400!
The usage of Proton cars to provide the base chassis for this project actually makes sense as Youngman (one of the partners in Detroit Electric, the other is ZAP) already has a relationship with Proton for it to supply left hand drive versions of the Proton GEN2 for rebadging in China as the Europestar RCR. Initially the orders will be CBU, but recently CKD kits have already started being shipped to China for local assembly there.
In fact, the faint sketch you see used to depict the Detroit Electric mid-sized sedan may be what a facelifted Europestar RCR will look like once the CKD operations in China are running smoothly and Youngman decides to give the Chinese GEN2 its own styling.
The technology used in these models are probably too expensive which is why the prices are quite high, making these cars far out of reach from the mass market here. It would be interesting to see if anyone brings them in here, perhaps Proton themselves.

Govt to find new ways to tackle high oil prices
2008/07/22
By : Hamidah Atan
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi inspecting a Lotus car that runs on electricity.
PUTRAJAYA: The government will introduce unconventional ways and the latest technologies to deal with high oil prices, the prime minister said yesterday.
Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said out-of-the-box, creative and innovative measures would be adopted from time to time.
Speaking after chairing a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Inflation, he said the committee had been briefed on the use of electric cars to replace gas, petrol or diesel.
National carmaker Proton Holdings Berhad has been given the green light to carry out in-depth validation and testing of cars using electric batteries.
"Last Friday, I launched a gadget called hydrofuel that could lower the consumption of petrol or diesel by 50 per cent.
"Today, the committee was briefed about these cars. They are not hybrid but electric cars. Two of the companies involved, The Detroit Electric and PRO Dis-T Sdn Bhd, had invited Proton to work with them.
"The cooperation will be meaningful for future Proton models."
Abdullah, who is also finance minister, said the batteries were durable.
"If it can be commercialised, then Proton can use it for all its cars. It is my hope that Proton will cooperate with the companies as this will benefit all car owners in the country.
"The cost for every kilometre is only 3.5 sen. Proton has been allowed to carry out technical validation and testing of all aspects of the cars.
"That assessment can be done in less than one year. If it satisfies all Proton's requirements, then it can be commercialised."
Abdullah took the opportunity to test-drive an electric car, a Lotus, after the meeting.
"The government will continue to find alternative resources so that we will not be too dependent on combustible gas, petrol or diesel."
Abdullah also said the government would continue to enact measures to ease the effects of high food and fuel prices.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, who also drove the car, said new technologies were needed to cope with present needs and demands.
"More measures will be introduced. Right now, we are looking into electric cars to help ease the burden of the people. We are looking into it as a viable alternative to petrol or diesel. If, indeed, it is viable, it can be introduced."

Pengkomersiolan kereta elektrik ganti bahan api
Oleh Abdul Razak Raaff
[email protected]

Proton shows its worth at tech week
Arman Ahmad
MORE than 55,000 people visited the Proton Technology Week at the national car maker's plant in Shah Alam over the weekend.

Based on this alone, the event which opened at 2pm on Saturday and ended yesterday, achieved its main objective -- to show to the public the various innovation initiatives as well as research and development facilities at Proton.
Visiting the plant was an eye-opener for many, as they were given glimpses of automotive products that could be expected to hit the market in the future.
A Proton Gen. 2 hybrid and a gas-powered Saga were among the exhibits that stole the show.
The Gen. 2 hybrid is said to be able to travel 100 kilometres on just 4.2 litres of petrol.
Proton's research engineer Muhammad Zulfadzil Che Mustafar said the car, powered by a hybrid 1.6-litre Campro engine and electric motor, can reach a top speed of 190 kph and accelerate from zero to 100 kph in nine seconds.
"The top management has not set the production date, but it is part of our development roadmap for the future," he said.
One of the visitors was Ab Wahab Che Mat, 48, who said he had come to the exhibition just to view the hybrid.
"I think the time is right for a hybrid, especially in the current situation of high fuel prices.
"Proton owes it to Malaysians to bring the car to the market quickly, in line with the trend worldwide," he said.
Another visitor, 30-year-old Desmond Chin who came all the way from Malacca, echoed the sentiments, saying that the sooner Proton introduces the hybrid car, the better.
Another car that received a lot of attention was a natural gas-powered Proton Saga, which was expected to be launched early next year.
A visitor, Mustafar Abdullah, 53, said the car was worth considering especially with the current high fuel prices.
A multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) that is scheduled to be released in the first quarter of 2009 also received a lot of attention. A shell of the vehicle on display attracted a big crowd.
The exhibition also did well to remove some negative perceptions about Proton's product quality.
The various processes of car production were on display for the public to see.
The power window testing booth was one of the most highly visited.
