Local craft steals show
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's first locally-manufactured "flying hovercraft" was a crowd-puller at the 11th Defence Services Asia 2008 (DSA 2008) exhibition.
The hovercraft, fitted with Proton engines, is produced by GIG Technology Holdings Sdn Bhd at its plant in Kampung Baru Subang, Shah Alam.
GIG Technology executive director Megat D' Shahriman said the idea to build the hovercraft was conceived last April.
"Since the government had never purchased any hovercraft then, we thought it was the best time to produce one and it turned out that Malaysia became the first Asian country to manufacture the vehicle."
However, the "flying hovercraft" has not been officially launched as it is still on trial.
"But we are looking forward to launch it soon, maybe next year," Megat said at the exhibition.
He said the hovercraft could fly 2m above sea level and move at a speed of about 45 knots (60-70 kph) on water and during flying mode, the vehicle's speed is 75 knots (80-90 kph).
Megat said the company had already sold three units to the Philippines. "We will be looking at Jakarta, the Middle East and Africa to market our hovercraft."
Participating in the DSA 2008 and Langkawi International and Maritime Aerospace exhibition last year was part of the company's bigger marketing plans.
Megat said the hovercraft could be used for search and rescue operations, sea inspection routines, waterway patrols, anti-piracy operations and high-speed infiltration into hostile areas.

Proton Stingray chopper-bike a big hit
Friday May 9, 2008
ALOR STAR: Mechanical engineer Rozman Semail did not receive any formal training in designing motorcycles.
But within three months, he succeeded in creating Proton Stingray, a prototype chopper-bike which runs on a car engine.
was driven by sheer interest, said Rozman, 42.
He said he had always dreamt of making his own handmade motorcycle
Handmade bike: Rozman showing off the Proton Stingray in Alor Star on Wednesday.
Then my immediate boss Nazril Mansor (at Proton Prototype Centre) threw the idea of Proton making its own motorcycle two years ago, I immediately volunteered to work on it.
Within three months, with the help of three colleagues, we succeeded in creating the prototype chopper-bike which is 100% Malaysian made and 90% handmade, said Rozman.
The Proton Stingray, which is shaped like a stingray, is on display at the Stadium Darul Aman in conjunction with the four-day Malaysia Skills Competition and Proton Skills Competition 2008 which began yesterday.
The two competitions attracted 64 participants who have to dismantle, measure and reassemble car engines to test their skills.
Proton Stingray weighs 1,300kg and can accelerate to 200kph. It can also travel in reverse.
However, the Road Transport Department has not allowed the motorcycle to be used on the road because the body frame is not made by a licensed manufacturer.
Rozman said Kedah was the fifth destination where the prototype was displayed to the public.
We have displayed the Proton Stingray at Danga Bay, Johor Baru, KLCC and Shah Alam, he said.
Motorcycle enthusiasts have until Sunday to have a close look at the 1.9m-long chopper-bike which is powered by the 1468cc Proton Wira engine 4G15P.
Proton lead engineer Muzam Shah Kama said Proton created the car engine-powered prototype to showcase its capability.
We just wanted to show we can create the machine using a Proton engine, he said.

Proton to produce gas powered cars
By Zuraimi Abdullah Published: 2008/06/26
PROTON Holdings Bhd plans to introduce cars that run on natural gas to be used as taxis first by year-end to help taxi drivers offset higher fuel costs.
Managing director Datuk Syed Zainal Abidin Syed Mohamed Tahir said the new Saga, Waja and Persona fitted with compressed natural gas (CNG) tanks would subsequently be made available for the masses.
Proton chairman Datuk Mohammed Azlan Hashim said there were already vehicles running on natural gas but they were retrofitted outside the car manufacturing plant. Hence, there might be issues of warranty and safety.
Syed Zainal said natural gas-powered vehicles were in demand after the recent sharp petrol and diesel price hikes.
He expects demand to grow further once more NGV (natural gas vehicles) infrastructure is set up.
Azlan and Syed Zainal spoke at a press conference after the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between Proton and training institution GiatMara in Shah Alam yesterday.
Entrepreneur Development and Cooperative Minister Datuk Noh Omar, who witnessed the signing, said the Cabinet had asked his ministry and Proton to discuss the prospects of designing a standard taxi for nationwide use over the long term.
He said Proton should not worry about market demand as his ministry had so far issued 50,000 taxi permits with about 38,000 units already in operation nationwide.
More than 23,000 taxis are in the the Klang Valley alone, Noh added.
Under the MOU, Proton is to provide cars, engines and other components worth RM1 million for use at GiatMara training centres nationwide over two years.
The national car company will also provide ancillary services, including practical training, for the GiatMara trainees.
Syed Zainal said Proton had given 110 cars to Giatmara since 2005 and another 100 units to other institutions since 2003.

Proton to help standardise taxis
Thursday June 26, 2008
By SURAJ RAJ
SHAH ALAM: Proton Holdings Bhd will look into the Government's proposal to standardise the design for Malaysian taxis.
Entrepreneur Development and Cooperative Minister Datuk Noh Omar said he had been asked by the Cabinet to discuss with the national carmaker to come up with a standardised design.
He said there were now many different vehicle models being used as taxis and a standardised design would help streamline the image of taxis in Malaysia.
Proton will study how best to carry this out. If it can do it, we will help guarantee take-up. Hopefully this can be realised by 2010, |
