Domenech: Euro preparations begin in Kiev

European Championship Qualifying: Group B

PARIS, Nov 20 (Reuters) - France start their Euro 2008 preparations on Wednesday in Kiev, where the World Cup runners-up play Ukraine in their final qualifier.

France have nothing at stake in the Group B match (1930 GMT) after Italy sent them through to next year's finals in Austria and Switzerland by beating Scotland 2-1 in Glasgow on Saturday.

'It will be the first game in our preparations for Euro 2008,' France coach Raymond Domenech told reporters.

'We must also use this match to show that we didn't need any help to qualify and could have managed on our own.'

Italy and France have qualified from Group B, which the world champions will top providing they beat the Faroe Islands as expected in their last qualifier.

France, who struggled in their campaign with two defeats by Scotland, want to finish off with their third successive win after victories over the Faroe Islands and Lithuania.

'We wanted to go to Ukraine to qualify but our goal remains to win,' said Chelsea midfielder Claude Makelele, who will retire from international football after Euro 2008.

Ukraine will be eager to restore pride after a 2-0 defeat by Lithuania on Saturday.

'Ukraine are a solid team and I don't really understand why but they desperately want to beat us,' said Domenech, whose players are likely to face freezing temperatures in Kiev.

France warmed up for the trip with a 2-2 draw with Morocco in a friendly in Paris on Friday, for which Domenech rested several key players, notably forwards Thierry Henry and Franck Ribery.

The pair will probably start a match that Chelsea winger Florent Malouda has pulled out of because of a knee injury.

Ukraine coach Oleg Blokhin said last week that a whole series of injuries had left his team depleted, naming defenders Olexander Kucher, Andriy Rusol, Andriy Nesmachniy and midfielder Maxym Kalynychenko as unavailable.

Ukraine goalkeeper Olexander Shovkovsky has become the latest victim. He played against Lithuania despite a cold, but tore an ankle ligament and and faces a two-month lay-off. Shakhtar Donetsk's Bohdan Shust has been called as a replacement.

Blokhin sounded a despondent note for Wednesday's match in a news conference following their defeat in Vilnius.

'It makes no difference in what place we finish in the end ... only the first two places matter. Being fourth or fifth is like being last,' Blokhin said.

Trezeguet overlooked for France

France coach Raymond Domenech has left striker David Trezeguet out of his provisional 30-man squad for Euro 2008.

Trezeguet, 31, scored 20 league goals for Juventus in Serie A this season and is France's third all-time scorer with 34 goals in 71 games.

"It's an organisational choice," said Domenech. "There are four or five central strikers, you can't cram each position. You have to make choices."

Six Premier League players are named but Arsenal's Gael Clichy misses out.

Chelsea stars Claude Makelele, Florent Malouda and Nicolas Anelka are included the squad along with Manchester United full-back Patrice Evra, Arsenal's captain William Gallas and Portsmouth midfielder Lassana Diarra.

Saint-Etienne striker Bafetimbi Gomis - called up for the first time after scoring 16 goals this season - is the surprise choice among the forwards while Marseille forward Djibril Cisse has also been selected.

Trezeguet scored the winning goal for France in the Euro 2000 final against Italy and played his part in the World Cup-winning side of 1998.

More recently, the Juventus striker started in France's 1-0 friendly win over England in Paris in March but was taken off for Sidney Govou on 64 minutes after a poor display.

Though Trezeguet is reported to have a difficult relationship with Domenech, the France coach insisted it was not an easy decision to make.

"It's never easy to wake up having to cross names from a list," he said.

France head for a pre-tournament camp in the Alpine ski resort of Tignes before a friendly against Ecuador in Grenoble on 27 May.

A day later he will then cut seven players for his final 23-man squad for the European Championships in Austria and Switzerland.

France begin their Group C campaign against Romania on 9 June in Zurich, followed by matches against the Netherlands on 13 June in Berne and Italy on 17 June in Zurich.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

France squad for European Championships:

Goalkeepers: Gregory Coupet (Lyon), Mickael Landreau (PSG), Sebastien Frey (Fiorentina), Steve Mandanda (Marseille)

Defenders: Eric Abidal (Barcelona), Jean-Alain Boumsong (Lyon), Francois Clerc (Lyon), Julien Escude (Sevilla), Patrice Evra (Manchester United), William Gallas (Arsenal), Philippe Mexes (Roma), Willy Sagnol (Bayern Munich), Lilian Thuram (Barcelona), Sebastien Squillaci (Lyon)

Midfielders: Alou Diarra (Bordeaux), Lassana Diarra (Portsmouth), Mathieu Flamini (AC Milan), Claude Makelele (Chelsea), Jeremy Toulalan (Lyon), Patrick Vieira (Inter Milan)

Strikers: Nicolas Anelka (Chelsea), Hatem Ben Arfa (Lyon), Karim Benzema (Lyon), Djibril Cisse (Marseille), Bafetimbi Gomis (St Etienne), Thierry Henry (Barcelona), Florent Malouda (Chelsea), Sidney Govou (Lyon), Franck Ribery (Bayern Munich), Samir Nasri (Marseille)
