South Korean actress Seo Hyun-jin is thirsty for more challenges, writes Bibi Nurshuhada Ramli SHE has played various roles, from a tomboy who turns into a gisaeng (Korean courtesan) to an over-ambitious chef. More recently, South Korean actress Seo Hyun-jin is seen as the next Romantic-Comedy Queen in K-dramas. She won the title at the recent tvN10 Awards for her role in the rom-com drama Another Miss Oh. But the actress can hardly believe her luck. “A queen?” she exclaims in an interview. “That’s a big title for me, but I am flattered. I think I still have a long way to go. I am just glad that people recognise my efforts and enjoy watching the dramas.” Seo, 31, made her debut in entertainment via K-pop girl group M.I.L.K in 2001. After it disbanded, she performed in a musical, which kick-started her acting career on TV. She received critical acclaim for her roles in period dramas, including Hwang Jini, The King’s Daughter Soo Baek-hyang and The Three Musketeers. However, her popularity rose with Another Miss Oh (2016), where she was praised for her portrayal of an ordinary yet relatable character. “It’s been a whirlwind of events in my career. I’m so thankful for the love and encouragement from viewers, and from people I know and don’t know. Everything’s happened so quickly, sometimes I don’t even know what has happened,” she says. Seo also sizzles in her latest drama series, Romantic Doctor, Teacher Kim, which has raked in high ratings in South Korea. Famous surgeon Boo Yong-joo aka the “Hands of God” (Han Suk-kyu), suddenly quits his job at a top hospital and disappears. He returns, with a new name, Kim Sa-bu, to work at a small hospital, guiding junior doctors. Seo plays a junior doctor, Seo-jung, who is shy yet bright but later proves to be a passionate doctor who will go to great lengths for her patients, earning her the nickname Crazy Whale. “When I first read the script, I was totally drawn to the medical drama,” says Seo. “I always think that if you read a script and you want to watch it, you have to be in it.” Seo-jung is not your usual damsel in distress nor is she a perfect, pretty young thing, she adds. “She’s the opposite. She’s a tough surgeon with a lot of baggage. I love characters who have so much depth. As an actress, it gives me an opportunity to push boundaries.” Romantic Doctor, Teacher Kim also stars Yoo Yeon-seok, Kim Min-jae, Lim Won-hee and Kim Hong-fa. Seo talks more about the drama and her career.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT SEO-JUNG? She’s very skilled but also flawed in many ways. She’s a very relatable character. The drama is so well written that it gives her opportunities to grow. The Seo-jung in episode one is different from the Seo-jung in episode six. We are quite similar in some sense. She’s not afraid to speak her mind and so am I. (laughs)
ANY CHALLENGES IN PLAYING HER? Yes, it’s very technical — from the way the scenes are shot to memorising the medical terms and expressions. We have to learn how to use the medical equipment and look like a pro while at it. (laughs)
WHAT’S IT LIKE WORKING WITH YUN YEON SUK? He’s tall! (183cm). He’s also extremely sweet and gentle. We work long hours and he always comes up to me and asks if I am tired, cold or hungry. That’s what makes him a gentleman. WHAT ARE YOU LIKE
WHEN IT COMES TO RELATIONSHIPS? I’m quite independent and I speak up, so guys sometimes find me intimidating. It’s not a problem though. Being outspoken helps prevent misunderstandings or unnecessary quarrels.
YOUR STRUGGLES AND MOTIVATIONS AS AN ACTRESS? Acting is addictive. Once you do it you just want to keep doing it. When I first began, there were many uncertainties. I kept wondering if this was for me. It’s not like an office job, where you know what’s happening tomorrow and where to go. Being an actress, you’re always waiting — for the right opportunities, or for your scenes to be filmed. All I can say is, it’s worth the wait! WHICH IS MORE
CHALLENGING — SINGING, ACTING OR BEING IN A MUSICAL? They’re all challenging in different ways. Each requires a different “side” of me (laughs).
WOULD YOU TRY HOSTING AND WHAT KIND OF PROGRAMME WOULD YOU LIKE TO DO? I don’t know if I am spontaneous enough to crack a joke and to make sure the mood is lively at all times. I have always thought that hosting is very stressful, because you have to keep the atmosphere and momentum going. WHAT ROLES WOULD YOU LIKE TAKE ON? Maybe in a thriller? Maybe a crazy woman who’s on a killing spree? (laughs). I am open to anything that challenges me. Romantic Doctor, Teacher Kim airs every Tuesday and Wednesday at 8.10pm on ONE (Astro Channel 393). |
