Queen Ingyeong (1661–1680) was the first Queen consort of King Sukjong of Joseon.
Daughter of Kim Man-gi[1] of the Gwangsan Kim clan and Lady Han[2] of the Cheongju Han clan. She was married at the age of 10 to Sukjong (at that time the Crown Prince (王世子 왕세자 wangseja)), entitling her as the Princess Consort to the Crown Prince (王世子嬪 왕세자빈 wangsejabin). In 1674, alongside with the enthronement of her husband, she became the Queen Consort of Joseon. In October 1680 (age 19), she showed signs of pox and died 8 days later in Changdeok Palace. She was buried in Ikneung (익릉) in Gyeonggi province. She had 2 daughters, all of whom died in childbirth.
She was given the posthumous title "Queen Ingyeong, Gwangryeol Hyojang Myeonghyeon Seonmok Hyeseong Sunui" (광렬효장명현선목혜성순의인경왕후 光烈孝莊明顯宣穆惠聖純懿仁敬王后).

Biography [edit]
Born into the Yeoheung Min clan, she was the second daughter of Min Yu-jung (Hangul: 민유중, Hanja: 閔維重)[1] (1630–1687) and his second wife, Lady Song of the Eunjin Song clan.[2]
She married King Sukjong as his second Queen Consort in 1681, at the age of 14. When so-ui[3] Jang Ok-jeong produced a son in 1688, it created a bloody dispute called Gisa literati purges (기사사화). During this time, Sukjong wanted to give this eldest son (entitled the wonja, literally the "First Son") the title of "Crown Prince" and wanted to promote Lady Jang from So-ui to Hui-bin.[4]
This action was opposed by the Noron faction, which supports Queen Inhyeon led by Song Si-yeol, and this was supported by the Soron faction, which supports Lady Jang. Sukjong became angry at the opposition, and many were killed including Song Si-yeol. Many, including Inhyeon and her family, were forced into exile. Queen Inhyeon was deposed, while Jang so-ui became Jang hui-bin, and then became the third Queen Consort.
Later in 1694, Sukjong, feeling remorse at his temperamental actions, gave in to a movement for Inhyeon's reinstatement, which was led by the Soron (this event was called the Gapsul Hwanguk (갑술환국,甲戌換局)) She was brought back to the palace and was reinstated as Queen Consort, with Lady Jang being demoted to hui-bin.
In 1701, aged 34, she became ill and died of an unknown disease (some sources say that she was poisoned).
It has been said that Sukjong, while mourning for Inhyeon, dreamed of her in a sobok dress drenched with blood. Sukjong asked Inhyeon of how she died, but Inhyeon didn't say anything, but pointed in to the direction of Jang Hui-bin's chambers. Sukjong awoke, then went into Jang's chambers. While approaching, he heard music and sounds of laughter. Eavesdropping, he saw Jang Hui-bin with Shamanist priestesses in her chambers, praying for the Queen's death, while striking a figurine with arrows. When this was discovered by Sukjong, Lady Jang was executed for her actions by poison.
One of the Queen's ladies in waiting wrote a book called Inhyeon Wanghu Jeon (Hangul: 인현왕후전, Hanja: 仁顯王后傳, Queen Inhyeon's Story), which still exists today. She is buried in Myeongreung (명릉,明陵) in Gyeonggi Province, and Sukjong was later buried near her in the same area. She has no issue to Sukjong. |

Biography [edit]
She was the daughter of Jang Hyeong (Hangul: 장형, Hanja: 張炯) and Lady Yun of the Papyeong Yun clan, her personal name was Jang Ok-jeong (Hangul: 장옥정, Hanja: 張玉貞).
Ok-jeong became a lady-in-waiting to Queen Dowager Jangnyeol (King Injo's second queen) at the recommendation of Prince Dongpyeong (King Sukjong's first cousin once removed). In 1686, after a visit with his step-great-grandmother (Queen Dowager Jangryeol), King Sukjong saw her and made her his concubine with the title of suk-won.[1] In 1688, she was elevated to so-ui (소의,昭儀), and in 1688 was elevated to the rank of hui-bin (희빈,禧嬪) after giving birth to a son (the future King Gyeongjong). She possibly had a second son, Prince Seongsu, but his identity is disputed. When Queen Inhyeon was deposed & forced into exile in May 1688, Jang hui-bin became Sukjong's third Queen Consort, backed by the Soron faction. Her son was made the Crown Prince.
Later, in 1694, with the reinstatement of Queen Inhyeon, Jang was demoted back to hui-bin. In 1701, Queen Inhyeon died of an unknown disease. It has been said that Jang hui-bin was discovered by Sukjong in her chambers with her brother Jang Hui-jae and Shamanist priestess praying for Inhyeon's death (while striking a figurine with arrows) and her reinstatement. Jang hui-bin, her brother, and anyone involved were arrested. Jang was sentenced to death by poisoning, which was carried out on 9 November (the 10th day of the 10th lunar Month) 1701. She was 42 years old.
After this, on the seventh day of the tenth month in the twenty-seventh year of his reign (1701), Sukjong passed a decree prohibiting concubines from being allowed to become Queens Consort in the future. Jang hui-bin left many folk stories behind including her greed over power, and a story involving right before her death with her son (then the Crown Prince (future King Gyeongjong)).[2]
Nevertheless, as the mother of the Crown Prince, she was given the posthumous title "Lady Oksan, Great Concubine of the Palace; Prefectural Great Concubine of the Indong Jang clan" (대빈궁옥산부대빈장씨 大嬪宮玉山府大嬪張氏). |

In 1694, during the twentieth year of Sukjong's reign, she was elevated to the rank of suk-ui (Royal Noble Consort of the 2nd grade) after giving birth to a son, Prince Yeoning-geum (later King Yeongjo of Joseon).

She was buried in Soryeongwon (昭寧園) in Paju, a designate historical site (No. 358. Address 267 Yeongjang-ri, Gwangtan-myeon, Paju-si, Gyeonggi-do).
A display of his deep filial piety, King Yeongjo set up a Jesil to lament over her death near her grave. He also had erected gravestones the contents of which were written by him in her memory, in addition he had built tablet houses on the 4 spots around her grave. Royal Noble Consort Sukbin of Choe memorial tablet was enshrined in the Sukbinmyo later Yuksangmyo (Shrine) later Chilgung (Historical site 149) the place where ancestral tablets of seven royal concubines are enshrined. All of them were birth mothers of Kings that never achieved the status of a Queen.
