Wenger calls for lifetime ban for Taylor
Livid Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger called for Birmingham defender Martin Taylor to be banned for life after his horror tackle left Eduardo da Silva with a broken leg.
Eduardo was taken to hospital following the sickening challenge just three minutes into Saturday afternoon's Premier League game at St Andrews which finished 2-2.
Taylor was said to be 'distraught' at the incident, with Blues boss Alex McLeish insisting the defender had no intention of hurting his opponent.
But Wenger was having none of it.
'This guy should never play football again,' he fumed. 'What is he doing on the football pitch?
'I've gone along with the idea for a long time that to stop Arsenal, you have to kick Arsenal. I knew that was coming for a long time now.'
Of Eduardo's injury, Wenger added on Sky Sports: 'His injury is very, very bad.
'More than the season is over.' |

Eduardo injury among worst seen
23/02/2008 - 2:08:15 PM Arsenal striker Eduardo da Silva suffered an horrific injury in this afternoon抯 Barclays Premier League match at Birmingham. See below story for link to footage of the incident.
Arsenal striker Eduardo da Silva suffered an horrific injury in this afternoon抯 Barclays Premier League match at Birmingham.
The Brazil-born Croatia star required more than eight minutes treatment for what looked to be a serious ankle injury before being carried off on a stretcher following a tackle from Martin Taylor.
The Blues captain was sent off for the challenge which came less than three minutes into the game at St Andrews.
Eduardo is not the first to sustain a sickening injury, and here PA Sport looks back at some others.
DAVID BUSST
The Coventry defender suffered a compound fracture of the tibia and fibula in a collision with Manchester United defender Denis Irwin during a match at Old Trafford in April 1996. The leg break was so bad that the bone pierced the skin and Busst抯 blood had to be cleared from the pitch. He never played professionally again. United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel, who witnessed the injury, required counselling afterwards.
LUC NILIS
The Belgian striker sustained a double fracture in his right leg as he raced towards goal while playing for Aston Villa against Ipswich in September 2000. He was forced to announce his retirement from the game the following January.
DJIBRIL CISSE
The Liverpool striker went down in agony under a challenge from Blackburn抯 James McEveley in a match in October 2004. His left leg crumpled under him, fracturing his tibia and fibula. The prognosis was that he would miss the rest of the season, but incredibly he battled back to fitness, making his return in the Champions League quarter-final against Juventus last April.
HENRIK LARSSON
The Celtic striker suffered a double fracture of his left leg 11 minutes into the Hoops |
