The two items were seized by police on Wednesday after a seven-hour search in the compound of the workshop-cum-house where four people were bludgeoned to death and their bodies burnt and dumped in a river.

Police also seized a wheelbarrow used to dispose the victims’ remains.

A police source said investigations at the crime scene with the presence of the prime suspects —  a mechanic and his eldest son — revealed that the two tools were used to kill the victims.

“We believe there are blood traces on the two tools that can assist us with our investigations,” the source said.

The source said the two items had been  sent to the police forensics unit.

The family of four is expected to be brought to the Tapah magistrate’s court today, where police are expected to apply for an extension of their remand order.

The remand period is due to end today, after being extended from Monday. The police are expected to apply for an extension because there is more to be done.

“The DNA analysis will take a long time as many items ranging from bones to blood and hair were sent to the Chemistry Department,” the source said.

Tapah police chief Supt Som Sak Din Keliaw said there was also a possibility the mechanic’s 54-year-old wife and their younger son, 17, could be released.

“All four suspects will be brought to court tomorrow. We will let the deputy public prosecutor decide on the next course of action,” he said.

The Welfare Department yesterday obtained a temporary custody order allowing it to place the mechanic’s two daughters under its protection.

Police obtained the order to prevent any threats to the safety of the two girls.

The girls, believed to be aged 23 and 11, were escorted into a Welfare Department van by police and department officers at about 12.15pm.

The sisters are expected to be placed in two separate welfare homes because of their different ages.

A police spokesman said the gruesome ordeal had taken a toll on the girls.

“They are quite traumatised from the entire incident and we will make sure they receive appropriate treatment,” he said.

He added that the eldest daughter would be a reliable main witness for the prosecution.
