Tapi itu tak didasari fakta yg kukuh noks. Kalau pakai statistik HIV, mmg sah 90% yg terkena HIV akibat hubungan seks ialah heteroseksual, manakala selebihnya biseksual dan gay. Tetapi kenapa yg 10% tu difokuskan?

Jakim’s anti-homosexuality flyers do more harm than good, say HIV experts

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 23 — Anti-homosexuality flyers distributed by the federal Islamic authorities have been derided by experts on HIV and AIDS, who said that its “misinformation” and “stigmatisation” will only drive vulnerable groups away.
The flyers by the Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim) was also panned for providing allegedly misleading facts, and ignoring the purported environment of hate, discrimination, violence and judgment against local homosexuals.
“Misinformed anti-LGBT propagandas will only drive more of the community to go under the radar,” said Dr Nason Tan, a general physician who works with the local lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community.
“By this, our efforts of HIV and other sexually-transmitted infections prevention will not be able to reach this most vulnerable key population, and bear in mind that HIV sexual transmission has usurped injecting drug users for many years now.”
According to Dr Tan, local authorities should first acknowledge the community’s existence as innate and not merely a medical disorder, if they are indeed serious in tackling HIV.
“[They have] every right to healthcare without discrimination or legal implications and not ‘reparative’ either through religious or moral means. Only then we can achieve the Zero Rate HIV infection manifesto,” added Dr Tan.
Dr Ilias Adam Yee of the Malaysian AIDS Council (MAC) revealed that the most common form of transmission across the world is in fact heterosexual transmission.
“Stigma and discrimination have been identified as one of the main barriers that prevent people from protecting themselves, getting tested and going into treatment. The term LGBT is not synonymous with key populations.
“We encourage an engaging and inclusive approach rather than one that further drives key populations underground,” added Dr Yee.
Despite that, the MAC executive council member explained that anyone who engages in risky behaviors are themselves at risk for contracting and transmitting HIV.
“We must therefore stress that HIV is not about specific communities or genders but what people do to put themselves at risk of infection. It’s not about who you are, but rather what you do,” Dr Yee said.
Earlier this week, Jakim told Malay Mail Online that it distributed controversial anti-homosexuality flyers to promote healthy living and reduce the spread of HIV among Muslims.
Jakim also pointed out that it has been giving out the flyers — which contained similar content to a US-based Christian campaign — for the past two years, and that there are no plans to stop doing so.
Titled “10 myths about homosexuality”, the flyer claimed homosexuals are not seriously disadvantaged by discrimination as they have higher levels of education.
The flyer also alleged that homosexual couples are less faithful and face more domestic violence than heterosexual counterparts.
The flyer did not state the source of its facts or the studies that back their assertions.
“The flyer produced by Jakim is worryingly manipulative as it pretends to put forward an unbiased view by relying on general sweeping statements with the mere hint of referencing research which others are not allowed to look up as there are no reference details,” said Angela Kuga Thas, the founder of advocacy group Knowledge and Rights with Young People Through Safer Spaces.
“Jakim has failed to consider the social context of how homosexuals have to survive in an environment of hate, discrimination, violence and judgment, a social context that Jakim’s flyer encourages,” she added.
Panning the flyers, Angela said this reflected Jakim’s “directive style” of “telling people what they think people should do, rather than for allowing people to decide for themselves what is truth”.
“From time to time, religious rights groups will publish ‘studies’ or ‘resource guides’ which they claim give the true picture of homosexuality,” Dr Tan claimed.
“These guides are meant to be referred to by individuals who want reasons to oppose LGBT progress, be it in schools or society in general. And often, they love to quote, ‘research shows’ in their papers/flyers. It’s misleading as myths and facts were misplaced and misconstrued to the public.”
Muslim-majority Malaysia continues to reject the perceived rise in LGBT activity, which together with growing calls for greater civil liberties, they deem to be an assault against Islam.
