Nigerian Team In Bus Argument
ThisDay newspaper of Nigeria asserts that Austin Ejide almost came to blows with Joseph Yobo after Nigeria's defeat to Cote d'Ivoire...
ThisDay claims that squad harmony is far from optimal in the Super Eagles camp.
The Nigerian daily claims that the team bus was far from a happy place during the side's brief journey from the stadium to the hotel after their 1-0 loss.
Goalkeeper Austin Ejide was reportedly restrained by other travelers after his argument with Joseph Yobo nearly came to blows.
Ejide was berating the stopper for failing to close down Salomon Kalou in the incident that led to the goal. The two had already traded harsh words on the pitch to this effect.
John Mikel Obi downplayed talk of disharmony, but admitted that things had not gone well.
"We made one mistake and that was the goal. When you make such mistakes you pay dearly for it," Obi sighed. "We should learn from them and people should take full responsibility."
"If we can do that, we've got a long way to go in this tournament, because we've got a good team and we played well," the 20-year-old midfielder added.
"We just need to concentrate all the time if we want to achieve anything." |

African Cup roundupGhana closes on quarterfinals with win over Namibia
ACCRA, Ghana (AP) -- Four-time winner Ghana moved to the brink of the quarterfinals at the African Cup of Nations Thursday, beating Namibia after Guinea's 3-2 victory over Morocco.
Ghana, which last won the title in 1982, got its only goal when Junior Agogo tapped in Quincy Owusu Abeyie's cross in the 41st.
"We knew they would not lose 5-1 in their second game,'' Ghana coach Claude Le Roy said referring to Namibia's first-round loss to Morocco. "I think we didn't put enough pace into our game.''
The Brave Warriors, making their second appearance at the continental championship, defended well, limiting the Black Stars scoring opportunities in the first half while Brian Brendell missed three easy chances for Namibia.
The host nation leads Group A with six points and needs only a draw in its final game to ensure a place in the final eight. Guinea and Morocco have three each. Namibia has none.
Ghana could play Mali or Nigeria in the next round should Ivory Coast top Group B. Nigeria meets Mali while Ivory Coast plays Benin in Sekondi Friday.
In the group's earlier match, Guinea took an early lead off Pascal Feindouno's 10th-minute free kick. Ismael Bangoura collected the France-based midfielder's pass to extend the lead in the 59th, seconds before Morocco replied with a goal by substitute Hicham Aboucherouane.
Feindouno added his second goal and Guinea a 3-1 lead in the 68th from the spot after Souleymane Youla was fouled in the area by Michael Basser.
Feindouno, however, became the first player to be ejected for his 68th-minute challenge on Elamin Erbate.
Abdeslam Ouaddou's powerful header in the 90th pulled Morocco within a goal, but Guinea withstood some late pressure to earn its first three points.
Guinea could claim a place in the quarterfinals by beating Namibia on Monday. Morocco, which claimed its only title by beating Guinea in the 1976 final, needs to beat Ghana to have any chance of advancing.
"It all started with the free kick,'' Morocco coach Henri Michel said. "There was a total absence of Moroccan players. The moment we came back in the game at 2-1 ... the penalty punished us.''
Ghana will be without Laryea Kingston in its match against Morocco after the Hearts midfielder was booked for dissent.
Guinea coach Robert Nouzarent used an attack-minded strike force, and winger Fode Mansare came close to scoring with a free kick in the 37th.
"We knew Morocco had a good team, but I think we got the success we deserved,'' Nouzaret said. "We had more success than against Ghana, and the efficiency we had enabled us to hold on with 10 against 11.''
Soufiane Alloudi, whose three goals helped Morocco to a 5-1 win over Namibia in the opening match, sat the second half with an injured knee. |
