HARAPAN MALAYSIA DLM ALL ENGLAND 2006
Cabaran tiga beregu lelaki diketuai gandingan veteran Choong Tan Fook-Lee Wan Wah masih bernafas namun agak menyedihkan beregu utama negara Chan Chong Ming-Koo Kien Keat gagal meneruskan kemaraan apabila terpaksa menarik diri pada pusingan ketiga.

So near yet so far.......
BADMINTON/All-England : So near yet so far
K.M. Boopathy
Jan 22:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
MALAYSIA had a confirmed grip on one and a firm grip on another but it was left to the veteran pair of Choong Tan Fook-Lee Wan Wah to march into the final of the All-England badminton championships at Birmingham’s national Indoor Arena yesterday.
Tan Fook-Wan Wah defeated compatriots Lin Woon Fui-Fairuzizuan Tazari 15-8, 15-7 in 33 minutes to book a berth in the doubles final for the second time in three years.
However, third-seeded Chong Wei appeared to be on the way to an upset victory over favourite and World No 1 Lin Dan of China but inexplicably allowed him to snatch a 9-15, 15-10, 17-14 win in the men’s singles semi-finals.
Chong Wei led 8-1 and 14-13 in the deciding game but just lacked the killer instinct to register a rare victory over Lin Dan.
It will also be a crucial mission for Tan Fook-Wan Wah as they earned the chance to slay the demons of 2004.
Then, Tan Fook-Wan Wah (left) looked set to end a 22-year wait for the men’s doubles title when they led Danish pair Jens Eriksen-Martin Lundgaard Hansen 15-9, 12-5 only to lose 15-9, 13-15, 3-15.
And tonight they face the very same opponents who vanquished them two years.
Giant-killers Zakry Latif and Gan Teik Chai gave early promise of an all-Malaysian doubles final when they took a 14-5 lead against Eriksen-Lundgaard Hansen but succumbed to pressure and went down 17-14, 15-9 in the other semi-final.
Tan Fook-Wan Wah had struggled to recover fully from the setback two years ago and a series of injuries over the last 18 months almost put an end to their careers.
However, thanks to chief coach Yap Kim Hock and the arrival of Indonesian coach Rexy Mainaky, Tan Fook-Wan Wah have made their way to the top and earned the chance to heal the wound that has hurt them the most, the defeat to Eriksen-Lundgaard Hansen at the same venue in 2004.
Razif and Jalani Sidek were the last Malaysian doubles pair to win the All-England title in 1982 and based on their current run in the tournament, Tan Fook-Wan Wah have what it takes to finally land the title.
Tan Fook-Wan Wah were hardly given any chance when they were pitted against World No 1 Candra Wijaya-Sigit Budiarto of Indonesia in the second round but they shocked the former world champions in style.
That was the major breakthrough Tan Fook-Wan Wah needed and they have improved by every match and appear to be in prime form.
Lin Dan will be meeting South Korean Lee Hyun Il, who sent defeated former champion Peter Gade of Denmark to a 3-15, 15-8, 15-1, defeat, for the title today.
As for And Chong Wei, he has to wait for another year for a shot at the title. But the memory of yesterday’s heart-breaking loss will linger for a long time.

Tan Fook-Wan Wah left standing.....
BADMINTON/All-England: Tan Fook-Wan Wah left standing
KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 21:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hopes of an all-Malaysian men’s doubles final for the first time in the All-England badminton championships were dashed as only Choong Tan Fook and Lee Wan Wah survived at Birmingham’s National Indoor Arena today.
Tan Fook-Wan Wah defeated compatriots Lin Woon Fui-Fairuzizuan Tazari 15-8, 15-7 but the nation’s other hopefuls, Zakry Latif-Gan Teik Chai, fell in the semi-finals.
Zakry-Teik Chai let slip a 14-5 lead against 2004 champions Jens Eriksen-Martin Lundgaard Hansen of Denmark in the first game, going down 17-14, 15-9.
And Lee Chong Wei almost made the men’s singles final but allowed World No 1 Lin Dan of China to snatch a heart-breaking 15-9, 10-15, 17-14 win in the semi-final.
Had Chong Wei defeated Lin Dan, it would have been the first time since 1996 Malaysia had representatives in both the men’s singles and doubles finals.
Then, it was Rashid Sidek who made the singles final while Cheah Soon Kit-Yap Kim Hock made the doubles final.
Tan Fook-Wan Wah will be trying to end a 24-year wait for the men’s doubles crown. Brothers Razif and Jalani Sidek were the last Malaysian pair to win — way back in 1982.
Tan Fook-Wan Wah came close to achieving the dream in 2004 but lost to Jens Erisken-Martin Lundgaard Hansen, the same opponents they will be facing tomorrow. |

Lin Dan saves match point to reach final
Badminton-Lin saves match point to reach final
BIRMINGHAM, England, Jan 21 (Reuters) - Top seed Lin Dan of China saved a match point to reach the All England badminton final for the third successive year on Saturday with a 15-9 10-15 17-14 win over Malaysian world number two Lee Chong Wei.
Lin, the world number one and 2004 champion, trailed 6-13 in the decider but staged a brilliant comeback to level at 13-13.
Wei went ahead at 14-13 but Lin saved the match point and levelled at 14-14 before one final effort carried the Chinese to victory. Lin took off his shirt and celebrated joyously in front of a 5,000 capacity crowd.
His opponent in Sunday's final will be South Korean fifth seed Lee Hyun-il who beat Denmark's Peter Gade, Europe's last hope in the singles, in their semi. In a match of sharp contrast, Gade swept through the opening game before Lee found his range and full power to race into his first All England final 3-15 15-8 15-1.
"I wanted to show the stamina and strength of the men's singles game in China so I focused really hard to aim to get one point at a time and when I got to 10-13 I felt much more confident," Lin told reporters.
After recovering from a serious knee injury a couple of years ago, Gade, 29, has looked in recent months to have found the kind of form which took him to the All England title in 1999.
DISAPPOINTED GADE
He ousted the promising Chinese talent Chen Jin in the quarter-finals and had Lee on the run in the first game on Saturday only to lose his way as the Korean took command.
"He had a lot of good variations in the the last two sets and all credit to him but I am very disappointed," Gade said.
"I felt my game has been very good this week but I also feel I have to accept I still need a longer period of preparation to get my physical level to where I want it to be."
Mixed doubles champions Nathan Robertson and Gail Emms of England, who survived an epic quarter-final against a powerful Chinese pair on Friday, had a much easier time on Saturday.
They defeated Indonesian second seeds and world champions Nova Widianto and Liliyana Natsir 15-12 15-4 in 44 minutes.
In the final they meet Zhang Jun and Gao Ling, the Chinese duo who pipped them to gold at the 2004 Athens Olympics.
"If we could avenge the Olympic defeat in front of our own fans it woud be perfect," Robertson said.
The women's singles final will be an all-Chinese affair between defending champions Xie Xingfang and Olympic gold medallist Zhang Ning, who has yet to win the All England title. |
