Manchester United wait on Varane

Manchester United will find out within the next 48 hours if their bid for Lens starlet Raphael Varane has been successful.

United have been tracking the Lens stopper for a number of months and were the first side to make a move for him this summer.

They lodged a bid of around 10million euros for the 18-year-old central defender, who admitted he was considering his options carefully.

Varane intimated he would like to continue playing first-team football next season, so United were set to allow him to move back to France on loan.

Real Madrid, who have also lodged a bid, were also happy for him to return as part of the deal but he also looks set to have the option to move within his homeland as Paris Saint Germain have also lodged an offer.

And it is PSG who have emerged as favourites to land his signature, despite the attention of the two European giants.

Lens president Gervais Martel confirmed that interested clubs will soon find out Varane's future.

"Given the clubs involved, it would be very hard to stop him [from moving," Martel told La Voix du Nord.

"I hope this will be finalised in the next 48 hours - I have just spent four hours on the phone, and there are many things to settle."

Papers: Young deal close
20/06/2011 09:00

Young to complete £17m United move
Ashley Young is expected to tie up his £17m move to Manchester United this week when the personal terms are finalised with the midfielder. The Old Trafford club hope to make an announcement in the next few days that they have signed the 25-year-old England winger for whom a deal has been in place for some time with Aston Villa.

Meanwhile, The Independent also claims United are also trying to tie down a deal for Lens' 18-year-old central defender Raphael Varane in the next few days, although they could face a challenge from Real Madrid.

The Telegraph claims Barcelona have won the race with United and City to sign Alexis Sanchez. The Chile winger is expected to complete a £32million move to the European champions from Udinese this week.

In other news, Javier Hernandez has vowed to be an even better player next season after a stunning debut campaign in England.

Bayern Munich keen on Nani swoop?

Bayern Munich are looking to make a shock bid for Manchester United's Nani, who has been shaken by the arrival of Ashley Young.

According to reports in the Independent, the Bundesliga giants are keen to add the 24-year-old to their list of wing wizards, and believe that the Red Devils' could be willing to sell at £20 million.

Although the Portugal winger claimed more assists than anyone else in the Premier League last term, and was named United's players' player of the year, the return of Antonio Valencia from injury in March reduced his involvement.

Nani then failed to make Sir Alex Ferguson's starting line-up for last month's Champions League final defeat to Barcelona, leading to fresh speculation about his future.

Even though the Scot has tried to reassure him about his future at Old Trafford, Nani is aware that if he indicated a desire to leave United in the wake of Young's arrival from Aston Villa, there would be huge interest across Europe, and could choose to depart the club.

"I am fine at Manchester United, but it is good to hear there are other clubs interested," Nani was widely quoted in the press as saying at a recent youth tournament in Seixal.

"Would I like to work under Mourinho? Yes, but at this moment I am fine at Manchester United.

"It was a very positive season for Manchester United, and my best individual campaign."

Nani scored 10 goals and had 18 assists this season and was voted by his team-mates as the Player of the Year for United.

De Gea undergoing United medical

David de Gea has arrived in England and is undergoing a medical ahead of his proposed move to Manchester United.

The Spanish goalkeeper has been identified by Sir Alex Ferguson as the long-term successor to Edwin van der Sar at Old Trafford and United are prepared to spend upwards of £17million in order to secure his signature.

De Gea underlined his obvious potential on Saturday as he helped Spain to European Under-21 Championship glory.

Having put transfer discussions on hold while he competed in that tournament, he is now prepared to push ahead with a move to England.

De Gea has been pictured arriving at the Bridgewater Hospital and is all set to put the finishing touches to an agreement with United.

His arrival at Old Trafford will see the Red Devils push their summer spending spree past the £50million mark and continue with their policy of snapping up bright young talent.

Ferguson has already acquired England Under-21 centre-half Phil Jones from Blackburn and England winger Ashley Young from Aston Villa.

Ferguson was keen to fill the void left by the vastly-experienced Van der Sar as quickly as possible and De Gea, regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in Europe, was identified very early on by the Red Devils boss.

He is likely to cost somewhere in the region of £17million - taking Ferguson's summer spending close to £50million - but if he can continue the progress he has with Atletico then it should be money well spent.

Such is De Gea's reputation that compatriot and Liverpool goalkeeper Jose Reina, who seems likely to face De Gea when the north-west rivals clash at Anfield on October 15, reacted positively to the player's move.

"I very much welcome this news because David is a great keeper," he told La Gaceta.

"When it becomes official he is going to start working to prove in the Premier League what a good goalkeeper he is."

Following the retirements of Van der Sar, Paul Scholes and Gary Neville from last season Ferguson has moved quickly to strengthen in three areas, bringing in players who all - in theory - should have their best years ahead of them.

The Red Devils boss is believed to want to add more creativity to his midfield and has been linked with Inter Milan's Wesley Sneijder and Arsenal's Samir Nasri.
