By Carla Sunwoo Korea JoongAng Daily
Despite it being over a year since his last visit to Japan, demand for Lee Byung-hun, or Byunsama (“sama” is an honorific title in Japanese) as he is affectionately called there, has not subsided.
When Lee landed at Haneda Airport in Tokyo for movie promotions on Monday, he was greeted by about 350 fans.
Lee who was in Tokyo to promote his movie “Gwanghae” (“Masquerade”) which will open there next month, thanked and shook hands with fans.
“It’s so nice to come back after such a long time,” he said. “Thanks for supporting me despite the years.” The Hallyu star was last in Japan in December 2011.
Yesterday, Lee held a press conference for the Korean period piece opening in Japanese theaters Feb.16.
After the official media event, Lee took part in promotions in Shinjuku, Roppongi and Marunouchi, meeting with a total of about 1,500 fans.
The film starring Lee opened in Korea in September and has drawn more than 12.3 million viewers, becoming the third most-watched Korean flick.

Lee attended the pre-screening events of the 2012 hit held at three theaters located in Shinjuku, Roppongi and Marunouchi in Tokyo, Japan on January 29.

Korean movie industry in renaissance
By Yun Suh-young The Korea Times
Last year was a record-breaking period for the Korean film industry. Box office numbers for January show that the industry is picking up from where it left off in 2012.
Moviegoers bought more than 195 million cinema tickets in 2012, up 22 percent from the previous year, a report from the Korean Film Council (KOFIC) showed. The numbers are the highest in the history of the Korean film industry.
Korean movies accounted for 58.8 percent of the market share here last year and the overall revenue of theaters, which included the sale of food and other non-ticket items, grew by 17.7 percent. As a whole, the movie business saw 13 percent profit on investments on 174 Korean movies that opened last year, marking the first surplus in seven years.
Theaters continue to bustle in the New Year as moviegoers bought nearly 12 million tickets in January, setting a new monthly high, up 45 percent from the same month last year.
“The movie industry saw a minus rate on investment earnings from 2007 until 2011. But in 2012, the record was broken and it saw an earnings surprise,” the report said.
Driving the Korean movie boom were blockbusters “The Thieves” and “Masquerade,” which both garnered over 10 million viewers, a mark the former needed only 22 days to reach.
“Masquerade,” a period drama starring Lee Byung-hun as King Gwanghae of the Joseon Kingdom (1392-1910) that followed “The Thieves” as the seventh Korean movie to reach the 10 million mark, appeared to get an election year boost.
“The release of Masquerade came at a time when the presidential race was heating up. Lee’s great performance in line with the nostalgia for late President Roh Moo-hyun brought people to the theaters,” said movie critic Park Woo-sung.
“The hit movies last year somehow accurately grasped the public sentiment. The moviemakers knew what people wanted and gave it to them. The distributors were conglomerates who were able to monopolize the market.”
Riding on this upturn are new releases, “A Gift from Room 7” and “The Berlin File” which are rapidly drawing people to cinemas.
“A Gift from Room 7” was released on Jan. 23 and had already attracted around 3.7 million viewers as of Sunday and the highest number among movies released last month. “The Berlin File” came out on Wednesday and recorded around 1.7 million viewers in just five days.
Easy access to theaters is a major reason attributed to the increased audience numbers, critics say.
“In the past, people just visited theaters to see movies. Now they go there when they’re shopping or dining. Theaters absorb people more easily as they draw closer to people’s lives,” said Park.

More Korean TV stars act abroad
By Shim Sun-ah YonhapNews
SEOUL, Feb. 4 (Yonhap) -- Korean TV stars have become known internationally through hit Korean television series that have graced the small screen worldwide like "Winter Sonata" (2002), "Jewel in the Palace" (2003) and "Jumong" (2006). Now, with a larger audience, these Korean household names are boldly extending their reach by acting abroad -- primarily in Hollywood and China.
Standing at the cusp of international stardom are Lee Byung-hun, Kim Yun-jin and Bae Doona.
Lee entered the Western market with the multinational co-production "I Come with the Rain" in 2008 and the Hollywood blockbuster "G.I.Joe: The Rise of Cobra" in 2009. This year, he is scheduled to star in two Hollywood blockbuster films: "G. I. Joe 2: Retaliation" and "Red 2," both starring Bruce Willis.
Korean-American actress Kim Yun-jin, who rose to stardom in the U.S. with her appearance in the U.S. television series "Lost" (2004), is set to star in the upcoming ABC drama series "Mistresses." She will play the second lead in the series scheduled to air this spring.
"When I was in 'Lost,' it took two weeks before all the members of the drama team to know my name as they experienced difficulty in precisely pronouncing the name 'Yun-jin,' but in 'Mistresses,' every staff member knew it," Kim said in a recent interview with Yonhap News Agency.
Actress Bae Doona is also expected to field many offers from the U.S. market. She captivated the eyes of major Hollywood film studios with her Hollywood debut in "Cloud Atlas" (2012), according to industry sources. Though the 130-billion-won budget film, directed by the Wachowskis, was a commercial failure, she won critical acclaim as a serious, young actress.
In China, the popularity of Korean pop culture has undeniably gained strength year after year.
The "Korean Wave," known as "Hallyu," began there when the MBC TV soap opera "What is Love?" became a sensation in China after first being broadcast on the state-run CCTV channel in 1996.
The rise of Hallyu is no longer news and Korean stars are now landing lead roles in Chinese TV series. Helming this trend are actresses Jang Seo-hee, Jang Na-ra and actor Park Hae-jin.
After rising to stardom in China with the 2002 Korean TV series "Miss Mermaid," Jang Seo-hee played one of the female leads in the Chinese hit TV series "Master Lin in Seoul" (2011). She is also the lead in a big-budget Chinese historical drama that began airing in December.
Park, who was first introduced to the Chinese market with his appearance in the Korean TV series "Famous Seven Princesses" (2006), is now as popular as Jang Seo-hee in China. His popularity has sky-rocketed in recent years with successes in two Chinese TV series, "Another Brilliant Life" and "Qian Duo Duo Jia Ren Ji" both shot last year. "He has recently received many job offers in China" and is the top-earning Korean actor there, the star's management agency said.
Jang Na-ra, who has acted in several Chinese TV series, such as "My Bratty Princess" (2006), "Good Morning Shanghai" (2007) and "Unruly Qiao" (2011), is so well known in China that some local viewers often mistake her for being Chinese. Her agency says the young actress will continue to work and foster her popularity in the country.
In the Chinese film industry, Korean stars Song Hye-kyo, Kwone Sang-woo and Jang Dong-gun have also been active.
Song, who gained popularity in the Chinese-speaking world through the Korean dramas "Autumn in My Heart" (2000) and "Full House" (2004), has recently starred in two Chinese films. One of those films, Wong Kar Wai's new masterpiece "The Grandmasters," also features Tony Leung and Zhang Ziyi, and is set to open at the Berlin International Film Festival on Monday.
Song was cast in renowned Chinese director John Woo's next film "1949" starring Chen Chang. The film recently finished shooting.
Kwone knocked on the door of the Chinese market with the country's romantic comedy "Shadow of Love" co-starring Hong Kong actress Cecelia Cheung last year.
He later captivated Chinese movie goers with "CZ12," also known as "Chinese Zodiac," a 2012 Hong Kong-Chinese action film written, directed by, and starring world-renowned action star Jackie Chan. Released in December, the film to date has grossed over US$137 million at the Chinese box office.

Lee Byung-hun Greets Fans Ahead of Japanese MASQUERADE Release
by Kim Hyun-min KOBIZ
“I Want to Work with Japanese Actors”
Lee Byung-hun took part in an event to celebrate the Japanese premiere of Masquerade at Shinzuku Wald 9 on January 29th with a view to greeting fans and wishing for the success of his film. After the screening of Masquerade, Lee appeared on stage with cheers from fans. “I had a hard time sleeping last night due to my high expectations for meeting you.” Lee said. “I think that fans are friends. I am very excited to meet friends after a long time.”
“Masquerade is a movie that everyone can enjoy.” Lee continued. “It is my first historical film. I enjoyed acting in the film as I found this work interesting after reading its screenplay. The audience's eyes will focus on the king in the movie and me. So the two have something in common. Their behaviors are limited and they should not misuse their power.”
Lee later said, after being asked about common points between the king in the film and himself, “actors, like the king, cannot continue to listen to the voices of the people. This is because actors can lose their colors and styles if they stick to making themselves suit fans’ taste. So actors go their own way with their belief. This is different.”
“I enjoy watching Japanese films.” Lee said after being asked about a possibility of working with Japanese actors and actresses. “I am ready to work with them if I get a good chance to do so such as working with good Japanese actors on interesting projects.” Masquerade will be released nationwide in Japan on February 16th.
