SPEED to kick off Japan's first 3D music show
Sat, October 2, 2010 (7:28am EDT)

Satellite channel BS Asahi is teaming up with electronics maker Panasonic to bring Japan its first regular 3D music show. Titled "Panasonic 3D MUSIC STUDIO," the show will air on Mondays through Fridays at 11:50pm-12:00am. Each week will feature a different artist, and each of those five 10-minute episodes will include performances of 1 or 2 songs.

The show's concept is to let viewers "thoroughly enjoy a private concert in their living room every night," as well as encourage the spread of 3D television sets (which Panasonic makes). With its late-night weekday time slot, however, BS Asahi and Panasonic are targeting older audiences.

Special programs have been aired in 3D before, but this will be Japan's first regular 3D program.

The show's first guest will be pop group SPEED, starting on November 1. According to the current schedule, the next guests (in order) will be Junichi Inagaki, Kosetsu Minami, Fuyumi Sakamoto, DA PUMP, Hiromi Iwasaki, and Shinji Tanimura. Thelma Aoyama is also said to be performing on the show, but the dates of her appearances have not been announced.

Avex's Super Girls to debut on new idol label
Sat, October 2, 2010 (12:42pm EDT)

SUPER?GiRLS, a 12-member idol group that was formed by Avex in June, held a live performance at Shiodome-AX on Saturday. During the event, it was announced that the group's CD debut has been set for December 22, when they will release their first album "Chouzetsu Shoujo."

Avex is creating a new sub-label called iDOL Street limited only to idol artists. SUPER?GiRLS will be the first ones on the label.

Saturday was the 18th birthday of member Rika Shimura, and she was surprised with a birthday cake and song on stage to celebrate the occasion. However, she was not the only one to get a surprise - the entire group was unaware that their CD debut would be announced that day, so they were moved to tears when the news was suddenly revealed.

The group will hold their first actual concert on October 23 at Harajuku Astro Hall. After the tickets sold out, they added a second concert at the same venue for November 21. Besides those shows, they will be holding a free mini-live tour sponsored by retail chain Ito Yokado, taking nine stops at Ito Yokado stores and Ario malls around the country between November 3 and December 5.

Oshio Manabu Out on Bail
October 05, 2010

Legal experts were stunned by yesterday's news that former actor Oshio Manabu (32) has been allowed out on bail. The Tokyo District Court recently handed him a two-and-a-half year prison sentence for four offenses related to his involvement in the August 2009 death of Ginza hostess Tanaka Kaori, a decision Oshio's lawyers have appealed. Nine separate applications for bail were previously turned down by the district court, but the Tokyo High Court finally ruled in Oshio's favor. As the public prosecutors didn't object to the decision, Oshio was released yesterday evening after paying ¥10million (about $120,000).

It was his first taste of freedom after 301 days in detention. With his hair down to his shoulders, and wearing a black jacket, white shirt, jeans and sneakers, he bowed briefly to the 200 reporters gathered outside the detention center before speeding away in a waiting taxi. He is believed to have spent the night at a hotel in Shinjuku and is heading home to his Tama City apartment on the outskirts of the capital today. His lawyer said that Oshio wants to pay his respects at Tanaka's grave and explain himself to her parents. They declined to make a comment to the media after hearing the news.

Lawyer and former public prosecutor Osawa Takayuki (65) said, "No matter what the crime, when a prison sentence has been given, there is the risk of flight or a repeat offense, so it is customary not to award bail. In this case, prosecutors did not appeal the length of the sentence, and in the appeals court the main charge has been reduced from fatal abandonment to simply abandonment, so the seriousness of the crime has been reduced."

Nihon University law professor Itakura Hiroshi (76) said, "I can see no reason to award bail. But as it has been given, ¥10 million seems the right amount."
