Eddie Jordan: I would sack Schumacher

Eddie Jordan, former team boss of Michael Schumacher, has said he would dismiss the German from his squad following the performance of the Singapore Grand Prix on Sunday night, in which the 7-time World Champion was involved in two incidents.

After qualifying in the top ten for the first time since Silverstone five races ago, Schumacher made up two places and was running seventh in the early stages at Marina Bay although this was followed by separate clashes with the Sauber drivers of Kamui Kobayashi and Nick Heidfeld on laps 30 and 37 of the 61-lap event.
Let’s ask this question: If Michael Schumacher was not Michael Schumacher, driving as he is currently driving inside Mercedes, would he be in the seat next year?” Jordan said of the German on the BBC’s post-race F1 Forum show. “My guess is ‘no’.

“I’m sorry, I’m going to be controversial this time. I would sack him, he’s clearly not good enough on this performance we’ve seen today. Clear.

“He is not doing anywhere near as well as his team-mate - his team-mate is up the front. I’m sorry, it was some…and Michael may be upset with me…so be; my opinion is I didn’t think Michael did himself, or the legacy that he has, justice.

“7-times World Champion…he should not be putting his reputation and his legacy at risk by doing this kind of race. Simple.”

“He’s up and down, isn’t he?” added fellow on-screen pundit and former team-mate of Schumacher Martin Brundle. “He’s up and down. I think Michael has had some solid races – in qualifying, for example, I think he did a good job this weekend.

“I don’t think he’s ever been that good in wheel-to-wheel combat; you know, he won his championships way out front with the best car, best driver and got it all under control.

“He is often…I remember races where he just had to finish eighth or something to take a world title and he still managed to run into everything; it’s not his strongest suit but he’s really struggling, isn’t he, amongst this field to do anything kind of wheel-to-wheel action without contact.”

“Where is the upside? Is there one?” Jordan continued. “Certainly for the fans, we love him actually; he may find that sort of bizarre in my comment…look, I think he has been the quickest, possibly the most controversial but the most brilliant racing driver ever in Grand Prix racing, that’s my view, and he now admits that at 41 it’s clearly not possible to do what you could do when you were 21.

“Why is he doing this? I just don’t understand why he is putting himself through this pain and, you know, I made a view – and I know it was reported – that I don’t think he will be racing there next year.

"Well, I still stand by that and I believe that the decision may be delayed until January or February because it will depend on how well Mercedes are going to design next year’s car and how good the tyres are going to be. If it’s clearly not good enough, I don’t think he’s going to do it.”

“The facts are that he’s got away with it and will get away with it for one year. I am interested in his legacy - by that I mean no-one will probably ever touch 7-times World Champion - and, as a result, if he does another year I’ve no doubt that it will be impaired, it will damage what that reputation is.

“This year, he took a very brave decision - he took on the guys, the car wasn’t good enough, he didn’t get it done. Now retire again and there will be no pain. The problem is, if he does it next year and doesn’t win he will be slaughtered, it will be terrible.”

Brawn: Schumacher will race in 2011

Mercedes team principal Ross Brawn has confirmed that Michael Schumacher will race with the team next season.

After an under-whelming return to Formula One, there has been much speculation that Schumacher would retire once more at the conclusion of the current season, an assertion that Brawn has rubbished.

"It is definitely not true," Brawn told the official Formula One website.

"What sense would it make at that stage of his comeback to pack in his job? He's not going to do it - be sure of that!"

Schumacher has been consistently outshone by his team-mate, Nico Rosberg, and Brawn admits that if a driver without the reputation of Schumacher had delivered the same performances they may not have retained their seat.

"To be honest, probably not," said Brawn.

"But because we know Michael, we know that there is still a lot to come because Michael is in many fields more talented than others - in driving and in the cooperation with the team. The team are very happy with the way Michael is contributing.

"If he were a rookie we surely would have asked ourselves if he has the capacity to advance. With Michael we know that he has."

Brawn believes the gap between Rosberg - who has achieved three podium finishes to his team-mates zero - and Schumacher is largely due to the way in which the drivers have coped with the new tyre regulations.

"Michael's driving style depends on a strong front tyre that can withstand his hard braking and the steering manoeuvres that he prefers. Nico has simply understood better how to handle these front tyres," explained the Briton.

"I have to say that this year's front tyre is very uncommon. That stems from the fact that the FIA wanted to promote KERS and had asked Bridgestone to develop tyres that would fit a certain weight distribution and thus create a specific tyre characteristic."

Despite his less than ideal performances, Brawn does not believe that the seven-time World Champion has lost any of the skill that made him a great of the sport.

"If you take the telemetry data in fast corners or his reaction time when the car breaks away, I don't see any difference," said Brawn.

"There he's still the old Michael. But in the slow corners he cannot make full use of the tyres as Nico can. Nico has put the bar very high in this respect. But I guess that's okay for Michael as he clearly sees where he has to improve.

"I predict that in 2011 we will again see the true Michael - when we've delivered him a better car," added the 55-year-old.

Schumacher not sacked because we know him - Brawn

Sep.29 (GMM) If another driver had lurked beneath Michael Schumacher's red helmet in 2010, boss Ross Brawn has admitted Mercedes GP might have ousted him. British television

pundit Eddie Jordan, Schumacher's first ever F1 boss, said in Singapore after the German's incident strewn run to 13th place that he "would sack him". "He's clearly not good enough on this performance we've seen," the Irishman charged. Asked a similar question by F1's official website, Mercedes GP chief Brawn admitted on Wednesday that – if Schumacher was not the famous seven time world champion and record-setting legend - the struggling occupant of this year's car number 3 might have been shown the door.

"To be honest, probably not," said the Briton when asked if he would have persevered with a different driver showing Schumacher's current level of performance. "But because we know Michael, we know that there is still a lot to come because Michael is in many fields more talented than others -- in driving and in the cooperation with the team," insisted Brawn.

"The team are very happy with the way Michael is contributing. If he were a rookie we surely would have asked ourselves if he has the capacity to advance. With Michael we know that he has," he added. Brawn rubbished suggestions Schumacher is on the verge of returning to retirement, and also that he might instead switch to a management role for 2011. "I have never talked to him about such an option," he answered. "He is a very intelligent man with a balanced family life. I don't know if he really wants to do that to himself. "As team principal you don't get the same adrenalin rush as when you are driving a car. What you get is a 10 to 12-hour working day and I am not sure if that would satisfy or motivate him," said Brawn.

There have also been rumblings of discontent within Mercedes and particularly between Brawn and Norbert Haug, but Brawn insisted he is not about to give up. "Of course I will retire one day, but I want to step down when I'm successful and not in a situation like I'm facing now," he said. "It's sad that such rumours always get around. But let's be clear -- none of us are happy with the performance this year, and of course Mercedes want to know how and when we will improve. "But nobody needs to tell me that it is important to win. And probably we can still improve the relationship between Brackley and the Mercedes engine factory, but Mercedes is very open to all suggestions," continued Brawn. "So at the moment there are no problems whatsoever. They will come if we are not able to improve in the future."

He was asked if 2011 is the deadline for Brawn and Schumacher. "Next year would probably be too early (to give up)," said Brawn. "I like this team. We have gone through many things together. I would never leave the team in an unclear situation."

Irvine slams Schumacher comeback as a 'disaster'

Hardly a day goes by without someone offering an opinion on Michael Schumacher's comeback, and the latest is former Ferrari team-mate Eddie Irvine.

Irvine, who openly acknowledges he lacked the talent to beat Schumacher during their time together in the late 90s, thinks it is now the German's turn to admit it is he who is struggling for raw pace.

"On paper, his return wasn't a bad idea," Irvine told La Gazzetta dello Sport. "But he had already lost something in 2006, when Felipe Massa was often in front of him. Three years later he has lost even more.

"The result … it's a disaster," he said, adding Schumacher should stop making "excuses" for struggling to keep up with Nico Rosberg in the sister Mercedes. "It's 'this is a new team, with new people'. But in his first year at Ferrari, the car was rubbish but he won three races," said Irvine, who in the sister car finished the 1996 world championship in tenth place.

Irvine also brushed aside suggestions that Schumacher is good at building a team, for example by leading the path on development matters. "Ferrari took him for his talent; he had no idea about how the car was behaving. Michael is a great driver; you can give him a suitcase with four wheels and he'll drive it quickly. Schumacher's strength is the driving, that's all."
