Brawn denies Mercedes building 'Schumacher car' E-mail
Sep.13 (GMM) Mercedes has denied it is building a car especially tailored to Michael Schumacher's driving style for the 2011 season.
The seven time world champion has struggled on his return to formula one this season, with a car designed essentially by Brawn when the Brackley based team thought Jenson Button would be driving it.
Schumacher has openly written off the rest of the 2010 campaign, amid suggestions he is waiting for the W01's successor that will be tailored to his driving style.
"We are not building a car around Michael; we just want to develop a good car," team boss Ross Brawn is quoted by the SID news agency.
"There is no special characteristic," he insisted.
But Brawn had already acknowledged at Monza that Schumacher's 2011 campaign depended in part on "how good the Pirelli tyre is" next year.
Schumacher commented: "I cannot remember a car that was designed to a specific style of driving.
"The only thing is a continuous development with the drivers, which can go in certain directions. But first of all it's about making the car as fast and as efficient as possible," he added.
Brawn said the gestation period of the 2010 car means it will never be a race winner, but he is hopeful about the future.
"We think we understand why we are where we are with this car," said the Briton |

‘At 41, you can’t keep up' – Briatore on Schumacher
Flavio Briatore, former Benetton boss of Michael Schumacher, believes that 7-time World Champion will have realised that returning to Formula 1 was a mistake by as early as the first pre-season test in February, adding that being able to keep up with the likes of new Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg could be close to impossible.
Briatore worked with Schumacher at Benetton as the German picked up his first and second world titles in 1994 and 1995. The Italian, who has been out of an active managerial role in the sport since the highly controversial ‘Crashgate’ race-fixing scandal of Singapore 2008, spoke to the official F1 website.
“I stick to what I said,” he commented, referring to his pre-season opinion that Schumacher should not make a comeback.
“I think when he signed the contract he honestly believed that it was the right decision - the same way I think that he already knew that it was a mistake at the first serious test.
“Then he awoke to the fact of how alarmingly fast these youngsters are today. At 41, you simply cannot keep up with Rosberg and all the other guys.” |

The collisions were racing incidents’ – Schumacher
Michael Schumacher believes that both collisions in which he was involved were racing incidents in Singapore, as opposed to apportioning blame to either driver following clashes with both Saubers.
The first moment arrived at Turn 5 on Lap 30, as contact with Kamui Kobayashi spun the 7-time World Champion into the barriers as the Japanese driver attempted the inside line.
The second came with fellow countryman Nick Heidfeld two corners down the road and seven laps later, with contact putting both cars into spins, causing Heidfeld to retire and Schumacher to make an extra pit-stop with a damaged front wing.
"I am not particularly happy about my first experience of racing in Singapore this evening,” said Schumacher. “I had two encounters with other cars which were racing incidents and meant that I had to make my stops at times which were not ideal and consequently my race was heavily compromised.
“I suffered with the rear tyres on my first set of Options (Super Soft compound) which made me slide rather than drive through corners which was tough, so I would probably say that I only enjoyed the second part of the race.”
Team-mate Nico Rosberg was happier, though, after delivering another quiet and solid drive to record a top five result.
"It was extremely tough out there but we achieved the best possible result for us today,” Nico explained.
“Our aim for the last few races is to finish as the best behind the top three teams and today we were able to profit as two of them had issues with Felipe (Massa) in qualifying yesterday and Lewis (Hamilton) in the race today.
“So fifth place is good for us and it's very satisfying for the team. I could push Jenson (Button) a little at some points, which was good to see. We will be aiming to finish the rest of the season as strongly.”
