CSKA MOSCOW
Akinfeev - 7 - Showed no effects of his pre-game health scare. Had one heart racing moment when Scholes' shot bounced in front of him, but saved expertly from Nani. Would have impressed Sir Alex Ferguson.
Odiah - 5 - Failed to get a grip on Nani and was left chasing his heels every time. If the Portuguese could cross, he would have been a serious weak link. Lucky to escape punishment for a tug in the box.
Ignashevich - 6 - Big presence at the back for CSKA. Swamped Berbatov when he was on the ball and didn't take a step backwards.
Vasili Berezutsky - 6 - Dealt well with the lone presence of Berbatov up top. Showcased the experience gained on international duty for Russia with a textbook display.
Alexei Berezutsky - 5 - Unsettled out wide, but played it tight when he drifted in to the middle.
Semberas - 6 - Sat alongside Rahimic in the middle of park and had a decent, but quiet 90 minutes.
Rahimic - 6 - Justified Ramos' decision to spring a surprise selection. Used his imposing frame to stamp his authority in midfield and found his team-mates when the ball came his way. Hooked to make way for the more attack-minded Carvalho.
Shchennikov - 6 - Solid display. Carried out his job to shadow his full-back. Subbed early in second half.
Krasic - 7 - Built on his reputation as a player to watch. Always looked lively, and his darts in-field caused problems. Played something of a stalemate with Fabio when he stuck to the touchline.
Dzagoev - 5 - Hustled out of the match by a United set-up designed to keep him quiet. Had the ball in the net, but was correctly flagged offside.
Necid - 6 - Unsettled the more experienced Vidic with his raw physicality. Didn't make the most of this uncertainty as he struggled to make a telling contribution. Put in a decent shift before being taken off.
Substitutes
Daniel Carvalho - n/a
Mamaev - 5 - Failed to make a mark on the match.
Piliev - 5 - His lack of experience shone through when he came on.
MANCHESTER UNITED
Van der Sar - 7 - Artificial pitch caused no problems. Intelligently dealt with any shots or crosses that came his way.
Neville - 6 - Solid at the back, but conservative when on the front foot. Nearly scored on the rare occasion he got forward.
Ferdinand - 6 - Run of games is paying dividends. The mistakes are seeping out of him by the minute. Got in the way of CSKA's attacks and was typically assured in possession. Rested before the hour mark with the trip to Liverpool in mind.
Vidic - 4 - Has yet to kick into top gear this season. Tentative from the beginning, he under hit a number of back passes and struggled to get to grips with Necid.
Fabio Da Silva - 6 - Confident first start in the Champions League. Showcased his attacking ability throughout, and kept Krasic reasonably quiet. Lucky to be saved twice by the offside flag when he gave away the ball in dangerous areas. Carried off with an injury.
O'Shea - 6 - Marshalled the defence and stuck to Ferguson's game plan to prevent Dzagoev from running the show.
Valencia - 8 - Nearly broke the cross bar with a thunderous shot and finished expertly in the 86th minute. His speed caused CSKA problems and he delivered quality crosses throughout. Nani could learn a thing or two from him.
Scholes - 6 - Ran the show from his deep lying position. Never flustered when in possession and found Nani and Valencia with his raking balls across the pitch. Taken off for Owen.
Anderson - 5 - Didn't get involved enough. Was given licence by his manager to get forward, but seemed reticent to do this. He must start taking control of matches to live up to the early hype surrounding his career.
Nani - 6 - All too familiar story. Toyed with his markers by dribbling past them with effortless ease, but all too often his final ball was dreadful. The sight of Berbatov flinging his arms in the air with frustration at him was a common occurrence.
Berbatov - 7 - Was let down by his team-mates' lack of desire to support him in his lone striking role and sloppiness in supplying him with the ball. Great header to set up Valencia.
Substitutes
Brown - 6 - No nonsense replacement for Ferdinand when introduced to the fray.
Owen - 5 - Always looking to strike, but hit an air shot when the ball finally came to him.
