Saki Fukuda sings again for her new drama series
Fri, June 12, 2009 (2:58am EDT)
This summer, actress Saki Fukuda (18) will be releasing her first single in over two years. Her "Ashita e no Hikari" will serve as an insert song in her upcoming drama series "Maid Deka," which starts June 26 on TV Asahi.
Fukuda made her singing debut in 2005 with "Attack No. 1 2005," used as the theme song of the live-action "Attack No. 1" series that starred Aya Ueto. She released a total of five singles and one album before shifting her focus to acting.
She landed her first lead role in a drama series with this season's "Ghost Friends" on NHK. "Maid Deka" will be her second, in which she plays an undercover detective posing as a maid for a wealthy family.
It has also been announced that JYONGRI (20) is providing the show's theme song, her first for a serial drama. The song is titled "Muteki na Ai."
Fukuda's "Ashita e no Hikari" is set for release on August 12, and JYONGRI's "Muteki na Ai" will hit stores a week later on August 19.

Southern All Stars' Yuko Hara sings solo for NTV drama
Wed, June 17, 2009 (3:42am EDT)
Yuko Hara of Southern All Stars has been selected to sing the theme song of NTV's upcoming drama series "Akahana no Sensei." The song's title and release date have not been revealed, but it is known that it was written by her husband and bandmate Keisuke Kuwata.
The last time Hara sang a drama theme song was in 1997, when she provided "Namida no Tenshi ni Hohoemi wo" for the NHK Asadora "Amakara-shan." That was also the last time that Kuwata wrote a song for Hara as a solo artist.
The new tune will be available as a chaku-uta on July 8, the same day that "Akahana no Sensei" premieres.

NHK are always thinking well ahead when it comes to their annual taiga drama series. Yesterday they announced the first details of their 50th yearlong historical drama, to be aired from January 2011. Titled "Gou - Himetachi no Sengoku," it will be based on the life story of Gou, official wife of Tokugawa Hidetada (1579-1632), the second shogun of the Tokugawa dynasty. Gou was related by either blood or marriage to the three key warlords (Oda Nobunaga, Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Tokugawa Ieyasu) of that tumultuous period of Japanese history. The series will be scripted by Tabuchi Kumiko, who also wrote last year's taiga "Atsuhime."

Juri Ueno stars in WOWOW miniseries
Tue, June 23, 2009 (2:46am EDT)
Actress Juri Ueno (23) has been cast in a drama miniseries that will air on WOWOW later this year. Titled "Ueno Juri to Itsutsu no Kaban," the show features Ueno taking on five roles in five episodes.
As the title suggests, each 30-minute episode involves a bag of some kind, such as a guitar case or a mysterious delivery package. Each story has its own staff behind it, including screenwriter Arisa Kaneko ("Densha Otoko") and director Nobuhiro Yamashita ("Linda Linda Linda").
Ueno will also sing the show's ending theme, tentatively titled "Kaban no Banka." This is her first song since she made her CD debut in 2007 with "Onara Taisou" from the "Nodame Cantabile" drama series.
WOWOW will broadcast the series on Thursdays at 11:30pm, starting on September 3.

"Kyumei Byoto 24 Ji" filming to resume
Wed, June 24, 2009 (4:02am EDT)
Fuji TV has decided to resume shooting for the fourth season of the "Kyumei Byoto 24 Ji" drama series. Earlier this month, lead actor Yosuke Eguchi sustained serious injuries in a motorcycle accident, forcing Fuji TV to halt filming.
Eguchi's injuries were said to require two months for a full recovery. With the show originally scheduled to start on July 7, filming had already started by that time but had to be delayed due to Eguchi's condition. The premiere has now been pushed to early August. Shooting will begin again on June 28, starting with scenes that do not involve Eguchi.

"Konkatsu!" closes above 10%
Tue, June 30, 2009 (2:55am EDT)
It was learned today that the final episode of Fuji TV's Monday night drama series "Konkatsu!" achieved a 10.5% average viewership rating in the Kanto region. As a drama in the network's typically popular "Getsu 9" time slot, the ratings have been below expectations all season, but the show made a small rally in ratings with this finale.
The show, co-starring SMAP member Masahiro Nakai (36) and actress Aya Ueto (23), achieved a rating of 16.3% for the first episode, but it dropped to 11.2% for the second. The third episode brought the series below the 10% mark with a 9.4% rating. The tenth episode, which aired last week, slipped to 8.8%, the record worst for a "Getsu 9" drama.

Nao Matsushita to play wife of "Gegege no Kitaro" author
Sat, July 4, 2009 (1:36am EDT)
On Friday, NHK publicly revealed its heroine for next year's Asadora "Gegege no Nyoubou." Actress Nao Matsushita (24) said she got the offer back in April, but had kept quiet about it until now, even from her own parents.
NHK officially announced the drama series earlier this year. It is based on an autobiography by Nunoe Mura, the wife of mangaka Shigeru Mizuki. As a couple, the two had to face many obstacles before Mizuki eventually attained fame with "Gegege no Kitaro."
Filming starts in November for the drama, which begins its run on NHK on March 29, 2010.
