Chelsea vs Newcastle Player Ratings

Newcastle
Tim Krul - 6.5

Krul was quick to come out of his goal line and help out his high defensive line and was always alert to Chelsea's attacks.

James Perch - 7
Perch deputised for the injured Simpson well, tidying up his flank and preventing any threat from Chelsea.

Fabricio Coloccini - 7.5
Coloccini marshalled the defence well and was near the ball whenever it came near Newcastle's penalty box.

Mike Williamson - 8
Other than a two lobs over the defence early in the game, Williamson won every header that went into the box and was never lost focus of the task at hand, standing strong even after Drogba was thrown into the fray.

Davide Santon - 8.5
The former Inter Milan man has nailed down the left back spot as his own recently and it looks like he is here to establish himself as one of the league's best. Santon displayed mature defending beyond his 21 years of age, handling Bosingwa easily while helping out the attack when needed.
Santon came away with the assist for Cisse's first goal and more importantly, cleared Terry's header off the line to keep his side in the game.

Cheik Tiote (Off 68') - 6.5
Tiote seemed intent on letting the world know he loves to play football rugby-style, earning a booking in the 4th minute after he bulldozed Torres. Even then, he continued bustling about the midfield like Godzilla set loose in the middle of Japan.
However, he was given a taste of his own medicine when Mikel clattered into him and left him with, according to Alan Pardew, "a nine-inch gash, 400 stitches which is just a scratch to him."

Jonas Gutierrez - 6.5
His inclusion in the squad down the left indicated that Newcastle would be seeking a more defensive approach on that flank and Gutierrez didn't disappoint, although a lot more could have been done in terms of attack.

Hatem Ben Arfa - 6
A somewhat disappointing performance from the ace marauder. Ben Arfa faded in and out of the game, showing sparks of his brilliance but failed to light up the match like he usually does.

Yohan Cabaye - 7.5
Cabaye played the role of a pivote well, channeling the ball to his team mates in front while dealing with Mikel's quick closing down.

Demba Ba (Off 74') - 7.5
His physical presence caused Chelsea a huge headache and was unlucky not to grab two goals himself, with a low shot saved by Cech and another shot rattling the crossbar. Completely overshadowed by his fellow Senegalese striker.

Papiss Cisse - 9.5
Well, well, what is there more to say? This guy has two right feet (in a good way), loves a volley, makes opponents pay for giving him a foot of space and scored two Goal of the Season candidates in a match.

His first goal showed his versatility, teeing Santon's pass in the box up for himself to volley in with his left foot and his second is close to being nominated as one of the Wonders of the World.
Cisse conjured a goal from Ameobi's header on the left flank, unleashing a fierce folley from the outside of his foot to curl the ball into the side netting, leaving Cech no chance at full stretch.
The only gripe now is that Goal of the Season nominations will need to be re-opened just to include him in it.

Substitutes
Ryan Taylor (On 68') - 6
He replaced Tiote but didn't get to see much of the ball, helping out in defence.

Shola Ameobi (On 74') - 6
Ameobi continued Ba's act of being the physical presence up in front and managed to hold the ball up well.

Newcastle vs Man City Player Ratings

Newcastle
Tim Krul - 4.5

The usually unflappable stopper was evidently nervous in the match with a couple of panicky moments against City, rushing out needlessly and giving everyone a scare and his distribution was suspect as well. However, there was little he could do to save Toure's classy finish.

James Perch - 6
Perch's versatility proved useful once more in the absence of Simpson at right back. After a rash early challenge on David Silva, Perch settled into the game but City's talented attack was too classy for him.

Fabricio Coloccini - 7
Coloccini was always chasing down his compatriots Aguero and Tevez, allowing them little space and time with a calm and collected performance.

Mike Williamson - 6.5
The tall, lanky defender controlled the air well until Dzeko came on in the final minutes. Despite his lack of speed, Williamson used his positioning well to give the City strikers a hard time.

Davide Santon - 7.5
For two weeks in row, Santon cleared the ball off the line for his side. Santon justified why he was once hailed as one of the world's best defensive talents, defending steadily while also charging up dangerously on the attack.

Hatem Ben Arfa - 6.5
Ben Arfa was creative down the flank to beat Clichy but his delivery was suspect and his two strikers hardly got the supply of crosses they need from the right flank.

Cheik Tiote - 6
Tiote was all action, never shying away from a tackle when the ball was there to be won. However, he was ultimately overwhelmed in the midfield when Mancini threw in De Jong to allow Toure the license to roam forward.

Yohan Cabaye - 7.5
The Frenchman was one of Newcastle's best players, always running to where the action is and looking to bring the ball forward for his side. His energetic performance and sharp eye for passes made sure that Barry had to work hard throughout.

Jonas Gutierrez - 5.5
Gutierrez had a large slice of the action down the left but failed find his strikers despite being given yards of space by Zabaleta, literally giving the ball back to City with almost all of his crosses.

Demba Ba - 5
A disappointing outing for the goal-dry striker. His first touch was often as clumsy as a center back's and he hardly got a chance on goal.

Papiss Cisse - 5.5
A poor outing by Cisse's mercurial standards but it was to be expected as the whole footballing world took note of him after last week's heroics. Half-chances were missed when he was expected to conjure a moment of magic to score, but City's defenders were too right on him.

Substitutes
Shane Ferguson (On 74') - 6

Ferguson looked promising on the overlap, showing speed to bother Zabaleta.
Shola Ameobi (On 74') - 5
Ameobi provided an extra option up front for his side but it proved futile as City held strong in defence.
Ryan Taylor (On 82') - N/A

Newcastle's Cisse wins prestigious Talents D'Afrique award

The January signing's blistering goalscoring form helped propel the Magpies to a remarkable fifth-place finish in England's top flight and a place in next season's Europa League
.

Newcastle United's Senegalese striker Papiss Demba Cisse has been recognised for his impressive debut Premier League season by winning the Talents D'Afrique trophy, presented by French television station Canal+.

The prize is award to the African player with the most goals throughout the five major European leagues - England, Spain, Italy, France and Germany - during the season, and Cisse's 22-goal haul clinched the trophy.

The 26-year-old netted nine times for Bundesliga strugglers Freiburg before completing a January move to the Magpies for a fee of £9 million.

After moving to Tyneside, Newcastle's newest number nine went on to score 13 goals in 14 appearances for Alan Pardew's side, including the stunning strike against Chelsea which was considering by many as the best goal of the season.

Cisse picked up the award in his home town of Dakar on Sunday, two days after captaining his country for the first time in Friday's 1-0 win over Morocco.
