Baros to join Lyon

Milan Baros is set to join Lyon next week, according to reports in France. It is understood the Aston Villa striker personally called Gerard Houiller to apologise for previously refusing to move to Lyon a year and a half ago.

The former Liverpool manager had previously declared that the door was closed on Baros after he refused to join Lyon in 2005. But the call has changed the manager's position, and he is now ready to sign the Czech international.

Norway striker John Carew could be exchanged for Baros, as Martin O'Neill is looking for a target man to partner potential signing Ashley Young at Villa Park.

"I met his agent last week," revealed Gerard Houiller.

"It is proof that, in football, you can never say 'never'.(Baros') phone call changed everything."

Furthermore, Houiller wants to sign a defensive midfielder in to cover injured Alou Diarra.

"The directors know my position" the coach added.

"I have been heard and I am happy that everybody is doing their best to recruit new faces."

Curbs backs MascheranoAlan Curbishley says that there will still be a place for Javier Mascherano in the West Ham United squad if his move to Liverpool falls through.

Liverpool want to sign the unsettled Argentine midfielder on loan, but need a special FIFA dispensation to complete the move, due to the ruling which states that no player can play for more than two clubs between July 1 and June 30. "There is a ruling that is quite clear that can't really happen, and it is out of our hands at the moment," admitted Curbishley.

"I have looked at my team selections and he hasn't featured in them. I felt that if there was an opportunity for him in this window we would let him go," admitted Curbishley. "If it doesn't happen he is a West Ham player, I have not dismissed him at all."

Curbishley also said that he doesn't want to let any of his other players leave in the transfer window.
