South Korea starts border propaganda war with 4minute!
On May 24th, President Lee Myung Bak of South Korea addressed the nation over the sinking of the Cheonan and vowed retaliatory action against North Korea after investigations showed that they were responsible.
The retaliatory actions outlined will not be an all-out war on their neighbours up north but through economic sanctions and the resuming of psychological warfare along the border. So what has this got to do with K-pop and 4minute?From an excerpt of a report written by Bomi Lee @ Bloomberg
“South Korea broadcast a pop song extolling freedom of choice and a warning on the dangers of overeating into North Korea, ending a six-year moratorium on propaganda in retaliation for the sinking of a warship…
The propaganda broadcast made on FM radio began at 6 p.m. local time yesterday when a woman anchor announced what she called the “voice of freedom.” North Korean listeners were regaled with a song by a South Korean girl band, Four Minute.
In the tune, “Huh,” the band sings: “When I say I want to appear on TV, when I say I want to become prettier, everybody says I can’t do it. Baby, you’re kidding me? I do as I please…”
The South Korean government is using the lyrics off 4minute’s latest hit song, Huh take a dig at the regulated North Korean regime, by saying that you can’t do anything in North Korea as you wish and that there’s no freedom at all. But in South Korea, you can do as you please without being controlled (somewhat).

For the confused people. The lyrics of 4minutes song was used as a way to basically tell north Korea that south Koreans are free to do whatever.basically used to make fun of north Korea for not allowing freedom
HyunA of 4minute expressed her sorry heart to her members after the consistent questions directed to her about the Wonder Girls.
HyunA originally debuted as a member of the Wonder Girls, but she resigned from the group after health complications prevented her from continuing group activities. Although she has since re-debuted as a member of 4minute, she can’t stop the barrage of questions and comparisons between the Wonder Girls and 4minute, especially since the two groups are now promoting their newest singles at the same time!
At the start of an interview with Newsen, HyunA quickly got something off her chest,
I always get the same question. I’m happy that we, 4minute and the Wonder Girls, made our comebacks together. We’re colleagues after all. We support each other, and if it turns out well, good.
HyunA continued on,
Whenever this subject comes up, I feel sorry to my 4minute members. I’m working hard with 4minute. My past experience is a great memory. We’re both very different flavors from each other, and I hope that others will see that and not take sides against each group. I’d like it if everyone acknowledged that we’re two very different groups and loved us for it.
She even added in some commentary about her experience as a solo performer, during herChange promotions. HyunA laughed, “Truthfully, being on stage by myself was strange. Now that I’m performing with my members, I feel confident. The aura I feel on stage is different.”It’s understandable that HyunA doesn’t want the Wonder Girls’ spotlight to cast a shadow on 4minute, but I’m sure they’ll soon shed those comparisons with their hit Huh (Hit Your Heart)!Source:Lee EonHyuk @newsen.comTranslation:mocha @kpoplive.com
4minute’s Hyuna has revealed her feelings about leaving Invincible Youth recently for 4minute’s overseas activities.
On the 25th, Hyuna said, “I feel sad that I can’t see the Yoochiri village people anymore,” showing her hurt feelings.
She continued, “Since all the G7 members are singers we could meet backstage or in between shows but I can’t do that with the village people, can I?”
When asked which G7 member Hyuna was closest with while filming Invincible Youth, the singer seemed troubled and answered, “I was close with all of the members so I can’t choose only one,” smiling while she replied.
Meanwhile, Hyuna filmed her last episode of Invincible Youth with SNSD’s Yuri and Sunny on the 19th. She is currently actively promoting 4 minute’s new song HuH

ASIA'S NEXT BIG THING? The girls from 4minute (from left): Ji Hyun Nam, Ji Yoon Jeon, Hyun Ah Kim, Ga Yoon Heo and Soh Yeon Kwon
One hour for 4minute.
That was how long the fans were waiting at Hong Kong International Airport for a glimpse of their favou rite Korean pop act, 4minute, on the chilly winter afternoon last Feb 19.
It was the last leg of the group's whirlwind promo-tour that had them debuting in The Philippines, Thai land and Taiwan prior to their arrival in Hong Kong.
Riding high with better-than-expected responses from their tour so far, it was a question of how well 4minute, yet another Korean pop group freshly minted in May of last year, will fare in what is considered one of the more jaded and saturated pop markets in Asia.
With all this in mind, who or what exactly, is 4minute?
For those who are not familiar with the band, there are five of them (yes, five girls but they're called '4'minute) - Ji Hyun, Ga Yoon, Ji Yoon, Hyun Ah and Soh Yeon.
"Hi! We are... 4minute!" chorused the five of them in practised syn chronicity as they walked in for an interview with some members of the Malaysian media, who were taken along for the ride in Hong Kong.
As a group, the girls were a warm, polite and vivacious bunch, sur rounded by their entourage (a veri table army of handlers, managers, make up artists and executives from Universal Music).
The girls (via a translator) ex plained their individual personas: Ji Hyun, as the leader, is charming and lady-like. Ji Yoon, the strong tomboy type. Hyun Ah, is the charismatic and sexy one while Ga Yoon exudes chic edginess. Soh Yeon, as the youngest, is the cute one (for now).
The product of Cube Entertain ment, the girls have been getting singing lessons for almost three years before their official debut.
Fans of Korean pop in Malaysia, would already be familiar with them via their debut single Hot Issue and their second release Muzik which has been climbing the charts since its re lease in June and August of last year.
So why '4minute'? Because it is the group's aim to "capture the audience with their charm in under four min utes".
When asked how they are different from the other pop bands around, Ji Hyun (speaking for the group) re plied: "I think we are different in that we want to do something new every day. To try to find new things and ele ments to add to our performance and music to show the fans."
They described their style of mu sic as "Candy Funky" - Candy for the colourful and sweet image while Funky describes their defiant, retro and free approach to music.
So do they ever fight?
"Oh no!" was the collective re sponse, "Arguments doesn't exist in our vocabulary, we get along very well and spend most of our time together doing things such as window shop ping or watching movies In June last year, fans in Korea stole various items from the group's van, including clothing and other items. Since then, their encoun ters with fans have been mild in comparison.
"Well, there was this one time when we were per forming and the audience was mostly women. Then we heard someone scream ing really loudly, cheering us on and we thought 'oh there are also guys in the audience' but when we looked closely - it was actually a woman!" re vealed Ji Hyun.
For the girls, their on-stage perso nas are different to their real life ones, with Ji Hyun noting that the fans would prob ably be sur prised at the difference.
"We're really quite girly off-stage, just normal teenagers and it's tough especially for Ji Hyun who's supposed to be the charismatic leader but she's actually quite affec tionate in real life so we're always teasing her and reminding her to keep that side hidden when on-stage!" re vealed Soh Yeon with a laugh.
LIKE CLOCKWORK: The girls worked hard and choreographed well to put on a powerful performance for the crowd
Anyway, the love for Korean pop music just keeps getting bigger de spite the language barrier. Groups and bands such as SNSD, Super Junior, 2PM, 2AM, etc are making waves globally. In Malaysia, Super Junior is slated to come and per-form on March 20, prompting many excited fans.
"During our promos around the world we learned that music doesn't have a barrier in order to enjoy it. It's a universal language and we're happy that our fans outside Korea like what we do," replied Hyun Ah.
The first stop for the girls was an appearance at the Emax Shopping Mall in East Kowloon to perform their two singles, along with an auto graph and meet-the-fans session.
A 400-strong crowd packed the mall, with many fans fully prepared with signs (some electric, oth ers hand-made) and the hysterical screaming commenced on cue with the girls' entrance. Language may have been a problem but it certainly did not stop the crowd from singing along (to the English parts at least).
In game-show-style fashion, the girls were asked to decorate a cake (one lucky fan paired with each member), create their ideal living room (with magnetised cut-outs on a board) with the members of Hong Kong group Mister and answered questions about their impression of Hong Kong.
But the real test would come from their last appearance of the day - a performance at the Studiodanz Show case at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Did they impress a crowd more accustomed to polished moves?
The university students themselves packed quite a punch, with highly original choreography and steps throughout the showcase.
When time came for 4minute to perform, their appearance on-stage was abrupt and unannounced, with members of the audience scrambling back to their seats upon realising that it was actually not an opportune time for a bathroom break.
As the strains of Hot Issue blasted out into the Jockey Club Auditorium, some singing could be heard from the crowd (the fans). Yet for the bulk of the audience, this was their first taste of the 4minute sound.
Dancing in step, with fluidity from years of practice, the girls did their thing for a 1,000-strong crowd and by the end of the performance (Hyun Ah got the most noise with her distinc tive hip swings), the level of applause and cheers meant one thing - they passed.
How did they really do in Hong Kong overall?
Perhaps the best people to ask would be the fans themselves. Along with members of the media for the group's Hong Kong showcase were two Malaysian fans, contest winners who scored themselves a trip to watch their favourite pop group in action.
Jackie Wong, winner of the MYFM contest first heard Hot Issue over the radio and was compelled to learn more about the group.
"I think they're very friendly and they did quite well in Hong Kong, I can see from the turnouts that they have a pretty strong fan base here," she noted, adding that if the group were to put in an appearance in Ma laysia, the response would definitely be bigger.
A sentiment echoed by Dayang Norshida Abang Suhali, the winner of the ntv7 contest, who was quite thrilled at the chance to meet the girls face-to-face ("it's the closest you can get to a Korean pop artist!").
Of the entire experience, Dayang said: "It was definitely worth the wait. I don't think they know how big Ko rean music is in Malaysia and if they were to come to KL, they will definite ly be surprised!"
Well word is, the girls are back in Korea working on their second al bum, so a concert on Malaysian soil wouldn't be too far off.

4minute, "We wanna be a full of scarcity & collectible masterpiece.", INTER
4minute who made their debut less than a year ago. It's been longer than 4 minutes (like their team's name) but they surpassed the other girl groups and received interests. 1 year is short but also long for them. They spent those time not only in Korea but also in other Asia country's stage.
The situation where their debut song 'Hot Issue' and their other song 'Muzik' became a hit. They comeback with a new song 'HuH', they polished themselves with a more youthful & retro image.
SoHyun: "'Hot Issue' and 'Muzik' received so many love. There's some burden, but it's a good one. We thought a lot of things we want to show on our break. There's some burden for sure, but the rising heart is way bigger."
Coming to an unknown/strange country become another step for them. The situation where they could only connect through songs despite their unconnected language. A situation where the fans pushed over the police line. Or when they have to held a performance without any mics. Those situation made 4minute grew some ability & adaptability for those kind of crisis.
"When we're promoting 'Hot Issue', even singing at the stairs gave us burden. It's weird. We can feel our development. We also gained some confidence by doing performance in other countries, we're feeling good that we gained more experience."
After their first comeback stage with 'HuH, some 'MR video' appeared at some site's bulletin boards. They singers could evaluate their hard work after becoming a singer. 4minute received some admiration from netizens.
"When we just debut, our live performances became a controversy. We practiced so much after hearing those kind of things. Actually we gained so much confidence now. (laughs) Fortunately, the reactions were good and we're feeling proud."
4minute once again changed their image with 'HuH'.' Their magnae, Sohyun, even cut her hair so short to capture a stronger image and sophisticated aspects. The 'Perfect Body' Heo Gayoon even did a diet to show her body line even more.
Gayoon: "We prepared it so hard. We quickly release our next album in the current music industry trends. It was a long hiatus though. We had a lot of greedy. Costumes, make-up, we pay attention to all little things."
The members' eyes were shining every time they talk about their stage or their life. They said, "We never rest even a day after debut. We did our album promotion all day, then practice for our album or overseas stage. That's why we didn't have time to rest."
We asked 4minute. If you're given 1 day for a vacation, what will you do? Their first answer was amusement park. But the next answer surprised all 4minute girls who's living at dorm together everyday. "I want to go to a pretty cafe and chit chat with the members. We're together everyday, but we have a lot of thing to talk to. It will be like that too even if you change the place."
Exciting imagination for a while. They said, "Actually we know that the situation won't turn like that. We know about our office staff's hard work. Instead of giving vacation or such things, we thought more about working even harder." They answered while showing their mature aspect.
Sohyun's parents are proud of her. She felt 'It's a good thing to be a singer.' Hyuna had so many hard times, but she'll forget it all on the stage. Looks like she works so hard, but there's no easy thing in this world. Simply loving 4minute, so do what you wanted to do and felt the happiness.
"We want to be a masterpiece. Not as in a luxury thing, but something that's unique, collectible, and something that people want to have. We're continuously working hard."
Meanwhile, 4minute is doing their activities with 'HuH'.
Recently, 4Minute has not only brought us great music, but has also shown their perfect figures and visually appealing urban look. Worth mentioning is the group's style which received many positive feedbacks as the quintet stands out from the sea of Korean idol groups.
Cube Entertainment said that the style 4Minute is adopting this time will become a new fashion trend. After the group's first comeback performance on TV, Cube received many phone calls inquiring about what 4Minute has worn on stage. 4Minute's popularity is currently accelerating with the newest mini album 'Hit Your Heart' and interesting fashion.
Looks like this urban look has been widely searched online according to wintersun. First Candy Funky, now this. The girls are really becoming hot issue.

4minute, "BEAST's reliable support, we won't know without saying thanks.", INTER
There's some people who's supporting 4minute at their debut stage, from Mnet until SBS. No other than the 'Siblings Group' BEAST. We can say that BEAST & 4minute is the pillar of Cube Entertainment.
BEAST come up to stage for a while before 'HuH', with the song 'Who's Next'. They prepared equipment, and full make-up just to support their little sisters, 4minute.
SoHyun: "Junhyung oppa is featuring in our album. BEAST showed their full charisma in the stage, I wanted to say 'Ah We're really family'. It was reassuring. I can feel that they're supporting us from the bottom of their heart."
It's not their time to promote, but BEAST still come for the sake of 4minute. There's some members who's not feeling well, but they still come because they're family.
HyunA: "I'm really thankful. I couldn't really express my feelings even though we're close. There's no way to express. We won't know if we didn't say thanks. I'm on the slow side."
They beat the wind and said, "When we saw SJ and SNSD on the stage together, we saw them congratulating each other if they won any award. We envied them."
4minute is always thankful for having some good fortunes. "There's so many good people around. We want to be even more nice to thank them. If we recall our first meeting together, it was also like that. Even though we have our own personal life, we're together like this as 4minute. Actually we're talking right here now, we knew that we're going to be together, even when we're still trainees." (laughs)
Meanwhile, 4minute is doing their activities with 'HuH'.
4minute member GaYoon has received a special birthday gift from her fans
On the 27th, according to a social welfare organization, over 200 members of a fan club started a project called "Star love Donations" where they are going to celebrate GaYoon's 21st birthday by organizing a fundraising project. They have started the fundraising project 2 months and 18 days ahead of Gayoon's birthday.
Fans said that they wanted to give her a special gift by helping others through donations. They are trying to raise money for poor young children who could not afford books and go to school. They will be helping those who are underprivileged in rural areas together with the foundation "Children of the future"
They will doing this project in the name of GaYoon, and also this is a way to give back to those who are not as privileged as them.
[10.05.26] 4minute “In dizzy kill heels, our feets covered with blisters and calluses are far prettier”
4minute has changed. They haven't only changed their looks. On stage, the 5 girls have already turned into ladies. Their charisma is strong as ever.
"We display each personality in a chic and sophisticated manner. Instead of an innocent and lovely appearance, I have to show off grace"(Nam Jihyun). At what the leader, Jihyun, said, the members unanimously added "the fans say that she's a goddess". At this, Jihyun just smiled as she was embarrassed.
Heo Gayoon, who caught the attention for her ‘masterpiece figure’ went on a diet for the preparations of this album. In their recently-released BTS clip of the photoshoot for their jacket pictures, Gayoon revealed her secret : "I only ate chicken breast. I also worked out strenuously and practiced the choreography.
"On the whole , we shaped our body lines rather than slimming. A lot of pictures of girl groups members’ small waistlines came up. We felt pressured. Even if we thought we could lose weight by just practicing the choreography, the truth was that the body wouldn’t adjust itself. The unnies went on a diet and after studying us, Sohyun joined us not eating.”
Nicknamed ‘Junglass’ among fans, Jeon Jiyoon sticked to a short haircut. However, she dyed her hair for the first time. Somehow, Jeon Jiyoon became an epitome with her boyish image rather than with a lovely one. Were not there times you had thought ‘I want to look feminine’?
"I had wanted to appeal for a feminine beauty. I tried to let my hair grow longer to try something new, yet a personality with ‘force’ suits me well.” (Jeon Jiyoon)
"Jiyoon acts cute a lot offstage. She’s just the opposite on stage. She also laughs a lot. When we consider it, we think that she’s feminine compared to ‘Hot Issue’ and ‘Muzik’ eras. Everyone says “she’s really pretty”. In comparison to the past, she’s smeared with feminine charms rather than boyish charms.”
This title track ‘HUH’ (Ha !, Hit yoUr Heart) is also a Shinsadong Tiger’s piece. Shinsadong Tiger is a composer who knows well the colors of 4minute’s personalities. “Except when he’s working, he usually converses a lot. He even knows all our insignificant habits. Besides the music, he draws concepts, hairstyles and even fashion styles. When we’re recording, he draws a lot so we could do things differently. He says ‘Do what you want to do. The right way is not in the music’. Even if he treats us well like an older brother, he doesn’t only compliment. He comments and listens carefully too.”
Even if they wear dizzy kill heels, 4minute perfom flawlessy their intense dance routine. Their basic heels are 13cm tall. “The pretty shoes are the high-heeled ones”. We were not reluctant to this style and ended up wearing thin heels to show off a pretty line.
"Our feet are messed-up compared to when we debuted. We even got blisters and a lot of calluses. When we look at each other’s feet during the practice session, it breaks our hearts but they’re seen pretty. It’s the evidence of our efforts.” (Kim Hyunah)
The difference between each member’s appearance on stage and the trainee period is amazing and far beyond imagination. That’s how the five girls are leaning on one another and rushing to the top of the world of Kpop. "Rather than having the same personalities, we are more cheerful. We feel the members’ energy a lot."
