FIFA moots Robben Island for Zidane-Materazzi reunion
BERLIN, Sept 11 (Reuters) - FIFA is considering South Africa's Robben Island as the stage for a reconciliation between Zinedine Zidane and Marco Materazzi, the defender he headbutted during the World Cup final.
Sepp Blatter, the president of FIFA, said on Monday that plans were afoot for the two players to be reunited, and one possibility was using the site of the notorious prison, where former South African president Nelson Mandela was held.
"We are working on bringing together Materazzi and Zidane," Blatter told reporters ahead of a meeting in Berlin to debrief national coaches after the recent World Cup.
"There are different possibilities and one of them is Robben Island in South Africa where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 27 years."

Makelele says he will quit before Euro 2008 finals
PARIS, Sep 30 (Reuters) - Chelsea coach Jose Mourinho and France coach Raymond Domenech have reached agreement over the international future of Claude Makelele, the midfielder was quoted as saying on Saturday.
'The aim is to do all I can to help France qualify for Euro 2008 but I shall not go further,' Makelele told sports daily L'Equipe in an interview.
The 33-year-old midfielder stated his desire to retire from international football after France reached the final of the World Cup but was recalled for their first two Euro qualifiers, earlier this month.
Mourinho accused Domenech of treating Makelele like a slave while France's coach said that according to FIFA rules he was entitled to pick the midfielder.
Makelele told L'Equipe that the two coaches had reached agreement after France defeated World champions Italy in their second Euro qualifier on September 6.
'When I went back to London after the game, I first talked to my coach (Mourinho) and then to the selector who gave me to understand that I had to change my decision to quit,' he said.
'For Chelsea, the priority was to avoid sanctions and controversy. For me, it's a relief. I'm glad the problem has been solved. I hate controversy,' he added.
The Chelsea midfielder has been selected by Domenech for France's next Euro qualifiers, against Scotland on Oct. 7 in Glasgow and against the Faroe Islands four days later in Sochaux.
Makelele said he expected to start against Scotland, who share the lead of Group B with France but hoped to be rested against the Faroe Islands.
'I think that, if we get a good result in Scotland, Domenech should give a chance to a younger player like Jeremy Toulalan,' he said. 'I'll talk to the coach about that. A turnover would be to his credit and it would be better for me.' |

Hartley eyes upset against France
Paul Hartley believes Scotland have a chance of upsetting World Cup runners-up France on Saturday.
The Hearts midfielder said: "It's going to be the hardest game I've probably played in for Scotland.
"In the past Scotland have struggled against the lesser teams but when we come up against the top nations we've done pretty well.
"We've beaten Holland, drawn with Germany, drawn with Italy, so why can't we get something against France?"
Scotland began their European Championship campaign with victories over the Faroe Islands and Lithuania to put them top of Group B.
But France are level on points after a 3-0 win in Georgia and then avenging their World Cup final defeat with a 3-1 triumph over Italy in Paris.
Hartley said: "A game against France is a special game for everybody involved with Scotland. The World Cup runners-up, previous World Cup winners.
"It's going to be a tough match but it's one we're looking forward to.
"We're going into the game confident after the last two games but France are a different kettle of fish compared to the other two teams we've beaten.
"I think France are a better team than Italy from one to 11, I think they've got better players.
"And that's what you want, to play against the best players in the world and see how you do against them.
"There might be a spell in the game where we have to do a lot of running but I think we're going into the game with confidence.
"In previous campaigns we haven't started as well. It's nice to get two victories and to be at the top with France and we have a nice cushion over Italy."
Hartley missed the start of the campaign with a groin injury but insists he is happy with his form and fitness after scoring his first goal of the season against Dundee United on Sunday.
"The more games I've played, the fitter I've become, the more of a threat I am coming into the box," he added.
"I've played four or five games since the last Scotland game - I'm getting there." |
